Chapter 9: The Name on the Hidden Account

The police separated everyone before Andrew could say another word.

Two officers escorted him toward the driveway while a detective named Laura Mitchell approached me.

She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and a calm, observant expression.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“I'm Detective Mitchell. We received a call regarding a possible connection between your vehicle accident and an attempted financial fraud.””

I nodded.

“There's more than financial fraud.””

I handed her the documents.

She examined the trust agreement.

Then she looked at Andrew.

“Is that your brother?””

“Yes.””

“Has he threatened you?””

“Tonight? Not directly.””

She studied my face.

“What about previously?””

I looked toward the driveway.

“His actions nearly killed me.””

Detective Mitchell made a note.

“We'll need your full statement.””

“You'll have it.””

She turned toward Diane.

“Mrs. Carter, I'd like to speak with you too.””

Diane nodded weakly.

Daniel stood beside me.

“Dad, I'm coming with you.””

I touched his shoulder.

“You don't have to.””

“I know. But I'm coming.””

Detective Mitchell looked at my wheelchair.

“Mr. Carter, would you prefer to sit down?””

I almost smiled.

“I'm learning to stand again. I prefer to use my legs whenever I can.””

She nodded.

“Then we'll take our time.””

The officers eventually placed Andrew in a patrol vehicle while they investigated the allegations.

He didn't resist.

He simply stared at me through the window.

There was no apology in his eyes.

Only resentment.

When the vehicles finally left, Thomas returned to the house.

“Sir, I've arranged additional security.””

“Thank you.””

He looked toward the study.

“There's something else you need to see.””

We followed him inside.

He opened the laptop and displayed the original security footage again.

“Remember the recording device Brielle removed from your desk?””

I nodded.

“I found another backup.””

He opened a hidden folder.

It contained audio files from several meetings recorded in my study.

I recognized the dates.

One was from the month before my accident.

Thomas clicked it.

Andrew's voice filled the room.

“Once Marcus is out of the way, the company becomes much easier to control.””

Another voice responded.

Richard.

“And what about the trust?””

Andrew laughed.

“That's the interesting part. Marcus doesn't even know what Dad left him.””

I leaned closer.

The recording continued.

Richard spoke again.

“If the trust is triggered, the property could be worth significantly more than the company.””

Andrew replied.

“Exactly. But I need control of Carter Logistics first.””

“Why?””

“Because the land agreement is connected to the company.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Thomas paused the recording.

“Mr. Carter, there's a file attached to this audio.””

He opened it.

It was an old development agreement between our father and Harborstone Development.

The document described a large parcel of land near Savannah.

But it wasn't ordinary property.

The land included access rights to a proposed commercial shipping terminal.

The project had been delayed for decades because of environmental reviews and ownership disputes.

Now, according to a recent valuation attached to the file, the land was worth approximately forty-eight million dollars.

I stared at the screen.

Forty-eight million.

Daniel sat down.

“Dad…”

I couldn't speak.

Our father had bought that land when nobody wanted it.

He had believed the shipping terminal would eventually transform the area.

He had been right.

But the agreement contained something else.

The land could only be developed through a partnership with Carter Logistics.

Whoever controlled the company could influence the development rights.

Andrew didn't just want my business.

He wanted the land.

And the money.

I looked at Thomas.

“Who else knows about this?””

“According to the documents, Harborstone's current directors, Richard Hale, and whoever has access to the trust.””

I shook my head.

“Find out whether Andrew has attempted to sell the rights.””

Thomas nodded.

“I'll contact the company's legal department.””

My phone vibrated.

An email from an unfamiliar address.

The subject line read:

*Your Father Left More Than Land.*

I opened it.

There was no greeting.

Only a message.

Marcus, if Andrew has contacted you, then the situation is already worse than I feared.

My name is Evelyn Brooks. I was your father's private accountant for twenty-six years.

I have the original financial records.

Your brother believes the trust contains forty-eight million dollars. It does not.

I frowned.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What does that mean?””

I continued reading.

The actual value of the estate is significantly higher.

A second paragraph appeared.

Your father established a separate holding account before his death. It was never listed in the public estate documents.

My heart began pounding.

The account has remained untouched for twenty-two years.

Then came the final sentence.

Mr. Carter, there is one person whose name appears on the account as an authorized beneficiary besides you.

I stopped reading.

Daniel looked at me.

“Who?””

I scrolled down.

The name appeared in bold.

*BRIELLE CARTER.*

I stared at the screen.

It made no sense.

Brielle had been a child when my father died.

She wasn't even part of our immediate family.

Why would Dad leave her anything?

I read the email again.

There was an attached photograph.

It showed my father standing outside our childhood home.

Beside him was a young woman holding a baby.

I recognized the woman immediately.

Brielle's mother.

My father's former secretary.

I felt the room grow cold.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Dad, why is Brielle's mother with Grandpa?””

I couldn't answer.

I zoomed in.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

Thirty-one years earlier.

And beneath it were seven words.

The truth about Brielle must remain hidden.

I slowly lowered the phone.

All these years, I had believed Brielle was simply Diane's niece.

A girl we had helped after her mother died.

A young woman I had welcomed into my home and treated like family.

But my father had known something about her.

Something important enough to hide inside a private financial account.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed Evelyn Brooks.

I answered immediately.

“Ms. Brooks?””

A woman's elderly voice came through.

“Mr. Carter, thank God you answered.””

“What is this about Brielle?””

There was a long pause.

Then she whispered:

“Marcus, your father knew Brielle was his granddaughter.””

I stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

Evelyn continued.

“And there's something else. Your father didn't leave her that money because he felt sorry for her.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why did he leave it to her?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because he knew one day she would come looking for it.””

A pause.

May you like

Then she delivered the sentence that shattered everything I thought I knew about my family.

“Brielle's mother didn't die of natural causes, Mr. Carter. Your father paid to keep the truth buried.””
