Chapter 10: The Original Key
The lights went out.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Jordan whispered, “Marcus?””
“I’m here.””
His voice came from the darkness.
Vanessa gasped.
“Where?””
“By the desk.””
Mrs. Reed reached forward.
“I can’t see.””
“Stay where you are.””
A faint red glow appeared.
The old key fob in Marcus’s hand had activated again.
The tiny light illuminated his face from below.
Then the emergency lights came on.
The room returned in a dim red wash.
Jordan immediately looked toward the monitors.
The image of the second Marcus was gone.
The showroom entrance was empty.
“What happened?”” Jordan asked.
Marcus didn't answer.
He was staring at the photograph still clutched between his fingers.
Mrs. Reed stepped toward him.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“You said you didn't remember.””
“I said I didn't know everything.””
“You remembered this.””
Marcus looked down at the photograph.
“Not at first.””
The attorney stood against the wall, breathing heavily.
Mrs. Reed turned toward him.
“Tell me the truth.””
He shook his head.
“You don't want it.””
“Yes, I do.””
“You really don't.””
“Tell me.””
The attorney looked at Marcus.
Then at the photograph.
Then finally at Mrs. Reed.
“Marcus worked here.””
Jordan stared.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered, “I knew it.””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head quickly.
“I didn't know who he was. I just knew there had been an employee with that name.””
Marcus looked at her.
“How long?””
“Before you bought the dealership.””
Mrs. Reed stared at the attorney.
“You told me there were no employees from the previous company.””
“There weren't.””
“There was one.””
The attorney nodded.
“Marcus.””
Marcus remained silent.
Mrs. Reed looked at him.
“What did you do here?””
Marcus finally answered.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“Fraud.””
The word echoed through the room.
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
The attorney closed his eyes.
Marcus continued.
“Cars were being transferred under false ownership records. Customer payments disappeared. Vehicles were moved between accounts that didn't exist.””
Mrs. Reed's face hardened.
“And you discovered it?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
“I reported it.””
“To whom?””
“The owner.””
Mrs. Reed went still.
“The previous owner?””
Marcus nodded.
“And?””
“He told me he'd handle it.””
The attorney whispered, “He did.””
Marcus looked at him.
“No. He buried it.””
Silence.
Mrs. Reed's eyes narrowed.
“You knew.””
The attorney didn't answer.
“You knew this happened before I bought the dealership.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me buy it.””
“I was told the records were clean.””
“By whom?””
The attorney looked at Marcus.
“By the same people who tried to erase him.””
Jordan looked toward the dark monitors.
“So the footage…”
Marcus nodded.
“Was created to make it look like I was here before I actually arrived.””
Vanessa whispered, “But why?””
“To make you doubt me.””
Mrs. Reed frowned.
“Why would anyone care whether we believed you?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because the original records were still here.””
He pointed toward the shelves.
“This room wasn't storage.””
He looked at the black case.
“It was a vault.””
Jordan stepped closer.
“For what?””
“Evidence.””
Marcus opened another drawer.
Inside were dozens of old files.
Every one marked with a number.
17.
18.
19.
20.
He pulled out one file.
The label read:
*17 — VEHICLE TRANSFERS*
He opened it.
Invoices.
Ownership documents.
Bank transfers.
Signatures.
Names.
Dates.
Then he found the final page.
A handwritten note was attached.
Marcus read it silently.
Mrs. Reed watched his face.
“What does it say?””
Marcus handed it to her.
She read the first line.
Her eyes widened.
Then she read the second.
Her hand began shaking.
“What?””
Jordan asked.
She couldn't speak.
Marcus took the paper back.
“It says the account was transferred to the new owner.””
Mrs. Reed looked at him.
“Me?””
Marcus nodded.
“But I never signed this.””
“I know.””
The attorney stepped forward.
“You need to understand—”
Marcus turned.
“You forged her signature.””
The attorney stopped.
Mrs. Reed looked at him.
“Did you?””
“No.””
Marcus placed the document on the desk.
“Then explain the signature.””
The attorney stared at it.
“I didn't forge it.””
“Who did?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus walked to the laptop.
The access history was still visible.
He clicked the final entry.
A video opened.
Grainy security footage filled the screen.
The old showroom appeared.
Years earlier.
A younger Marcus stood beside the same desk.
A younger version of the attorney entered.
Behind him was the previous owner.
They placed a stack of documents on the desk.
Marcus watched.
The younger version of himself pointed at the papers.
The owner said something.
The audio was damaged.
Then Marcus on the screen pulled out a small black key fob.
The exact same model.
He pressed the hidden button.
A red light appeared.
Present-day Marcus stared.
“I recorded them.””
Mrs. Reed whispered, “You knew.””
“I suspected.””
The footage continued.
The previous owner suddenly noticed the red light.
He lunged for Marcus.
The screen cut.
Jordan stared.
“What happened after that?””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
“I was fired.””
Vanessa asked, “Then why did you disappear?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I didn't.””
She frowned.
“I stayed nearby.””
“For how long?””
“Until the dealership was sold.””
Mrs. Reed stared.
“And then?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then I waited.””
“For what?””
“For someone to finally open the room.””
Mrs. Reed looked around.
“You could have come years ago.””
“I tried.””
Her expression changed.
“When?””
Marcus pointed toward the second key fob.
“That was the problem.””
He picked it up.
“There were two.””
Jordan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“One activated the recording.””
He held up the first.
“The other activated the lock.””
He held up the second.
Vanessa stared.
“So someone wanted you trapped here.””
Marcus nodded.
“Exactly.””
The attorney suddenly turned toward the exit.
Marcus noticed.
“Where are you going?””
The attorney stopped.
“I need to make a call.””
“No.””
“You don't control me.””
Marcus stepped between him and the door.
“No.””
The attorney's face hardened.
“You think you've won?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't think.””
He pointed toward the laptop.
“I know.””
The attorney stared at the screen.
The security footage was still running.
Then the laptop displayed another message.
*UPLOAD COMPLETE.*
Mrs. Reed looked at Marcus.
“What did you upload?””
“The evidence.””
“To whom?””
Marcus smiled faintly.
“Everyone who needs to see it.””
The attorney's face went white.
“You wouldn't.””
“I already did.””
Vanessa started crying.
Jordan stood completely still.
Mrs. Reed looked at Marcus.
“You planned all of this.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why come today?””
He looked at the old photograph.
“Because today was the deadline.””
“What deadline?””
Marcus looked at the clock.
The same time appeared on the security system.
10:15.
“The records were scheduled to be destroyed at noon.””
Mrs. Reed's eyes widened.
“By who?””
Marcus looked at the attorney.
The attorney said nothing.
Mrs. Reed understood.
“You.””
He lowered his head.
“I was ordered to.””
“By whom?””
The attorney's voice broke.
“The previous owner.””
Mrs. Reed stared.
“He's dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then who gave you the order?””
The attorney looked toward the showroom.
At the empty glass entrance.
Then at Marcus.
“I don't know.””
Marcus studied him.
“You do.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Look at me.””
The attorney did.
Marcus's voice became quiet.
“The man outside wasn't a stranger.””
The attorney's face collapsed.
Mrs. Reed whispered, “Who was he?””
Marcus looked toward the showroom.
“The previous owner's son.””
Jordan frowned.
“But he's supposed to be overseas.””
Marcus nodded.
“He was.””
Vanessa looked frightened.
“Then where is he now?””
Marcus walked toward the hidden doorway.
“Here.””
Everyone turned.
A shadow appeared beyond the glass entrance.
A man stepped into the showroom.
Black.
Same face.
Same clothes.
Same key fob.
But this time, there was no screen between them.
He stopped several feet from Marcus.
For a long moment, the two men simply stared at each other.
Then the newcomer smiled.
“You took long enough.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You were always impatient.””
Mrs. Reed stared.
Jordan couldn't speak.
Vanessa backed against the reception desk.
The newcomer lifted his key fob.
Marcus lifted his.
Two identical devices.
Two red lights.
Then the newcomer looked at Mrs. Reed.
“You wanted the truth.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
He smiled.
“Then ask him.””
He pointed at Marcus.
“Ask him why he really came back.””
Mrs. Reed turned.
Marcus looked at her.
The showroom fell silent again.
She asked the question.
“Why did you come back, Marcus?””
Marcus glanced at the old photograph one last time.
Then he looked at the people gathered around him.
His voice was steady.
“Because the person who destroyed my life wasn't the owner.””
He turned toward the attorney.
“It was the person standing beside him.””
The attorney's face went white.
Marcus continued.
“And now…”
He looked at the two blinking key fobs.
“…he finally has to tell you what he did.””
The attorney lowered his eyes.
Mrs. Reed stared at him.
Jordan stepped away.
Vanessa began crying.
Outside, police sirens could be heard approaching through the glass walls.
Marcus placed the old key fob on the reception desk.
The red light blinked once.
May you like
Then stopped.
And for the first time in years, nobody in the showroom was afraid of the man in the worn boots.
