Chapter 1: The Folder That Stopped the Wedding
“DON’T SAY ‘I DO’ UNTIL YOU READ THIS!””
The shout ripped through the luxurious wedding hall just as Maya Bennett opened her mouth to speak her vows.
Every head turned.
The main doors stood wide open behind the intruder, and an older Black man in a navy tuxedo was striding down the white-carpeted aisle with a thick, sealed legal folder clutched against his chest. His gray hair was neatly combed, his goatee carefully trimmed, and his eyes were fixed on the bride.
Maya recognized him before he reached the altar.
For a moment, the room seemed to lose its sound.
Then Isaiah Carter slammed the folder onto the ceremony table.
The ring box jumped. One of the white roses beside it toppled onto the polished floor.
A hundred guests gasped.
Maya's fingers tightened around Marcus Reed's hand.
“Isaiah?”” she whispered.
The older man stared at her. His breathing was uneven, and tears had already gathered in his eyes.
Marcus stepped forward, his tall athletic frame blocking part of Maya from the intruder. His black tuxedo fit perfectly, his jaw rigid with anger.
“Who the hell invited you?”” Marcus demanded.
Isaiah didn't look at him.
“Read the folder, Maya.””
Maya stared at the thick envelope. A red seal crossed its flap, and several official labels were visible beneath the clear protective sleeve. Whatever it contained, it had been prepared long before this morning.
She looked back at the man who had just shattered the most important moment of her life.
“You disappeared for twenty years!””
Her voice cracked on the final word.
Isaiah flinched.
“I know.””
“No, you don't know.”” Maya shook her head, her long black waves shifting over the lace shoulders of her ivory gown.
“You don't know what you did. You don't know how many birthdays I spent waiting for a phone call that never came.””
“I remember every one of them.””
“Then why weren't you there?””
Isaiah's mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Behind Maya, someone whispered. A chair scraped across the floor. The chandeliers continued shining over the white flowers and elegant ceremony table, making the tension in the bright hall feel almost unreal.
Marcus tightened his grip on Maya's hand.
“Listen to me,” he told her quietly.
“You don't have to entertain this. We can have security escort him out.””
Isaiah finally turned toward him.
“Would you throw out a man who might be the only person here trying to protect her?””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“You don't get to ruin her wedding.””
“I'm trying to stop another lie.””
The words landed harder than the folder.
Maya looked from one man to the other.
“Another lie?”” she repeated.
“What does that mean?””
Isaiah lowered his eyes to the sealed documents.
“It means you deserve the truth before you promise your life to someone.””
Marcus moved closer to him.
“She knows the truth about her life. She knows who raised her. She knows who loves her. And she knows who abandoned her.””
Isaiah absorbed every word without defending himself.
That silence made Maya angrier than an argument would have.
“You had twenty years to explain yourself,” she said.
“Twenty years. You could have called. You could have written a letter. You could have shown up on any ordinary Tuesday and told me why you left.””
“I couldn't.””
“You couldn't, or you wouldn't?””
Isaiah looked directly at her.
“I was afraid of what would happen if I did.””
Maya's eyes widened.
“Afraid of whom?””
He glanced toward the guests, then back at her.
Before he could answer, a woman stepped out from the third row of seats.
Attorney Carter wore a cream suit with a simple gold necklace. She carried a slim leather briefcase and walked toward the altar with the controlled composure of someone accustomed to delivering news that changed lives.
“Isaiah,” she said, “you told me we would handle this privately.””
“We ran out of time.””
“You promised me you wouldn't interrupt the ceremony like this.””
“And I promised Maya's father I would make sure she knew the truth.””
Maya went completely still.
“My father?””
Attorney Carter stopped beside the ceremony table.
Isaiah's face tightened as he realized what he had said.
Marcus turned toward the attorney.
“Who are you?””
“Attorney Carter. I was retained to preserve and deliver a collection of sealed legal records.”” She looked at Maya.
“Miss Bennett, I understand this is an extraordinary and deeply distressing situation.””
“That's one way to describe it,” Maya replied.
“Then tell us what's in the folder,” Marcus said.
Attorney Carter placed her briefcase on the table.
“The records concern Maya's parentage, a DNA test, and a legal matter that began twenty years ago.””
A stunned murmur traveled through the guests.
Maya stared at Isaiah.
“You took a DNA test?””
Isaiah didn't answer.
“Was it mine?”” she demanded.
“Was it a test to find out if you were my father?””
His hands trembled beside the folder.
Attorney Carter gently touched the envelope.
“These records were never supposed to reach you under these circumstances.””
“Under what circumstances?”” Maya asked.
“At my wedding? In front of everyone I love? Or before I made a decision you think I shouldn't make?””
“I didn't choose this day because I wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why today?””
Isaiah's eyes filled.
“Because I heard something that made me realize I might lose my last chance.””
Maya swallowed hard.
“Your last chance at what?””
He looked at her as though the answer would break him.
“To tell you what really happened.””
Attorney Carter reached for the folder.
The red seal split beneath her careful fingers.
Maya watched the envelope open, unable to look away. Marcus stood beside her, no longer trying to remove Isaiah from the room. His expression had changed from anger to a guarded, unsettled concentration.
Attorney Carter drew out the first document.
Then she stopped.
Her eyes moved across the page, and her composure faltered for the first time.
“Isaiah,” she said softly, “you didn't tell me the test was this old.””
He closed his eyes.
Maya felt Marcus's fingers tighten around hers.
“What does that mean?”” she asked.
May you like
Attorney Carter lifted the document toward the light.
And Maya saw her own name.
