Chapter 6: The Daughter He Misjudged

Three days later, Leon called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

Almost.

But I knew avoiding him wouldn’t solve anything.

“Hello?””

“Maya.””

His voice sounded different.

Less confident.

More careful.

“I saw what you posted.””

I frowned.

“What did I post?””

“You know what I mean.””

I hadn’t posted anything about him.

Not yet.

“I haven’t said anything.””

“That’s exactly the problem.””

I sat up straighter.

“What does that mean?””

“Maya, people are asking questions.””

I laughed quietly.

“Already?””

There was a pause.

That told me everything.

“Who?””

“Maya.””

“No, seriously. Who?””

Leon exhaled.

“You’re angry.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“You’re emotional.””

There it was again.

The way he always made my feelings the problem.

I stood up.

“I’m emotional because I found out my whole life you let me believe something that wasn’t true.””

“I told you I supported you.””

“You let people think you paid for my education.””

“I was proud of you.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

Silence.

Then his voice lowered.

“You don’t understand what I’m trying to build.””

I looked out the window.

“No.””

I said it calmly.

“I understand exactly.””

“Maya—”

“You’re building a version of yourself.””

“That’s not fair.””

“You wanted to be the father in the picture.””

He didn’t respond.

Because we both knew I was right.

“You know what hurts the most?”” I continued.

“What?””

“I would have forgiven you.””

That caught him off guard.

“I would have forgiven you for missing things. For making mistakes. For not knowing how to be a father.””

My voice shook.

“But you don’t get to rewrite history.””

“Maya, I love you.””

I closed my eyes.

I had waited years to hear those words.

But now they felt different.

Because love wasn’t just something you said when someone was walking away.

Love was something you proved when nobody was watching.

“I need you to stop using me,” I said.

His voice changed.

“What?””

“My graduation. My story. My struggles. My accomplishments.””

“You’re my daughter.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“And I’m also a person.””

The line went quiet.

Then he said:

“You’re going to regret embarrassing your father.””

I froze.

Not because it hurt.

Because it confirmed something.

He still thought this was about embarrassment.

Not accountability.

I ended the call.

That evening, I made my decision.

I wasn’t going to attack Leon.

I wasn’t going to create rumors.

I wasn’t going to become someone fueled by revenge.

I was going to tell the truth.

I gathered everything.

The university payment records.

The messages.

The information from former students.

The public claims that didn’t match reality.

Then I contacted a local journalist who had covered community organizations.

Her name was Angela Price.

She agreed to meet me.

When I arrived, I expected judgment.

Instead, she simply asked:

“Why are you doing this?””

I thought about it.

Because the easy answer was anger.

But it wasn’t the whole truth.

“Because there are people out there who trusted him.””

Angela nodded.

“And?””

“And because my father deserves credit.””

She looked at me.

“Which father?””

My eyes filled.

“The one who was never asking for it.””

The article wasn’t published immediately.

Angela wanted everything verified.

Every document.

Every claim.

Every person involved.

And while we worked, Leon continued posting.

More graduation pictures.

More speeches.

More messages about fatherhood.

But something had changed.

People started asking questions.

Not many.

Not yet.

But enough.

Then one afternoon, I received a message from Leon.

We need to talk before this goes any further.

I stared at the screen.

For the first time, I wasn’t afraid of that sentence.

Because I wasn’t the little girl waiting for him to choose me anymore.

I had already been chosen.

Years ago.

By the man who stepped out of the picture.

So someone else could shine.
