Chapter 5: The Money Missing From Our Family

I read the messages until the words blurred.

Someone had photographed the inside of my bedroom.

Someone knew about the documents in Vanessa's drawer.

And someone was watching closely enough to know that I had discovered them.

I stepped into the hallway and called the number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then a woman's voice answered.

“Mr. Reed?””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Patricia. I work at the bank where your family's accounts are held.””

I straightened.

“Why are you texting me photographs of my bedroom?””

“I didn't take that photograph. I received it from someone who said you needed to see the documents in your wife's possession.””

“Who sent it?””

“I can't disclose that over an unsecured call.””

“Then why contact me at all?””

“Because there have been unusual transactions involving an account connected to your family, and I believe you may not be aware of them.””

My stomach tightened.

“What transactions?””

“I can't share confidential financial information until we verify your identity and establish your authority to receive it.””

I gave her my name and asked what I needed to do.

She instructed me to contact the bank's fraud department through its official number and request a review of the relevant accounts.

Before ending the call, she added, “Please don't send anyone your passwords or account codes. We will never ask for them by text.””

The warning made me trust her more, not less.

I thanked her and hung up.

Then I called the bank directly using the number on my card.

The representative verified my identity and reviewed the accounts to which I had access.

After several minutes, she transferred me to the fraud department.

A man named Michael introduced himself and explained that he couldn't discuss every detail immediately, but he could confirm that several transactions had been flagged for review.

“Are the accounts compromised?”” I asked.

“We're investigating whether the activity was authorized.””

“Did my wife make the transactions?””

“I can't confirm that without completing the review.””

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“Michael, I'm not asking you to accuse anyone. I'm asking whether money has been moved out of accounts I own.””

“Some transfers are under review. I recommend securing your online banking access and checking the account permissions.””

“Can you tell me how much?””

He gave me the total of the transactions visible in the account I had authorized him to discuss.

My breath caught.

It was more than twenty thousand dollars.

I sat down on a plastic chair outside Maya's hospital room.

“Over what period?””

“The transfers occurred over several months.””

“Where did the money go?””

“Several destinations are being reviewed. We can't characterize them as fraudulent at this stage.””

I thanked him, changed my banking password through the official app, and requested a written record of the transactions.

Then I called my accountant.

“James, I need you to look at something urgently.””

“What's happened?””

“I think money has been moved out of our household accounts without my understanding of where it went.””

James went quiet.

“Daniel, are you talking about the family account or the inheritance trust?””

“Both, if possible.””

“Your trust is governed by separate documents. I'll review what I'm authorized to access and tell you what I find. Don't make any transfers or accusations until we understand the records.””

I looked through the glass panel in Maya's door.

She was laughing softly at something Rachel had said.

I wanted to walk back inside and forget everything else.

But if Vanessa had been using money intended for our household while refusing to buy our daughter medicine, I needed to know the full truth.

An hour later, James called back.

“I found something.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“There have been transfers from the joint household account to an account I don't recognize. There are also payments to a financial services company that isn't listed among your usual expenses.””

“Can you identify the company?””

“I'm checking.””

“And the inheritance trust?””

“Your trust appears to be separate, but I found a document indicating that Vanessa requested information about whether distributions could be made to cover household expenses.””

“That doesn't mean she took anything.””

“Correct. I'm not saying she did. But the request needs to be reviewed.””

I rubbed my eyes.

“Send me everything you're permitted to send me.””

“I will. And Daniel?””

“Yes?””

“Please speak to an attorney before confronting anyone about the financial records. You need to protect yourself without doing anything that could complicate the investigation.””

I thanked him.

By the time I returned to Maya's room, Rachel had taken her to the hospital play area with permission from the nurse.

I found them at a small table near the windows. Maya was arranging colored blocks into a crooked tower.

“Daddy!”” she called.

“Look. This is our house.””

I crouched beside her.

“That's a very tall house.””

“There's a room for Bunny,” she explained, placing a purple block at the top.

“And a room for Aunt Rachel.””

“What about you?””

She pointed to the center.

“I'm here.””

“And where's Daddy?””

She placed a blue block beside hers.

“Right here.””

I smiled, though my throat hurt.

“That's where I'll always be.””

Maya hesitated.

Then she asked, “Can we live somewhere else?””

Rachel stopped moving the blocks.

I looked at my daughter.

“What makes you ask that?””

“Because Mommy gets mad when I talk about things.””

Her fingers pressed the blue block into the table.

“I don't want her to be mad. But I don't want to be scared all the time.””

I drew her into a careful hug.

“You deserve to feel safe in your own home.””

She rested her head against my shoulder.

“Will Mommy still be my mommy?””

“Yes,” I said.

“Nothing can change that.””

It was the only answer I could give her honestly.

That evening, Vanessa arrived at the hospital carrying a stuffed bear and a bag of Maya's favorite snacks.

She stopped in the doorway when she saw Rachel.

“Why is she here?””

Rachel rose from her chair.

“Because Maya asked for me.””

Vanessa placed the bag on the table.

“I am her mother. I don't need permission to visit my own child.””

“No one said you did,” I replied.

“Then why does everyone keep treating me like a criminal?””

I stood between Vanessa and Maya's bed.

“Because there are serious questions that need answers.””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“Sweetheart, tell Daddy you're feeling better. Tell him you want to come home.””

Maya shrank toward Rachel.

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Don't do that, Maya. You know how much I've done for you.””

“Vanessa,” I said sharply, “don't put that on her.””

“I'm her mother!””

“And she is a child. Stop asking her to take responsibility for your feelings.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

She turned toward Maya again.

“I brought you your favorite bear.””

Maya looked at the bear but didn't reach for it.

“Thank you, Mommy.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

For a moment, I saw a woman who seemed genuinely hurt.

Then she looked at me.

“You've turned her against me.””

“No. I'm listening to her.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Can we talk privately?””

I followed her into the corridor.

She immediately lowered her voice.

“What have you told Rachel?””

“The truth about the prescriptions.””

“Anything else?””

“Why?””

She looked toward the hospital room.

“Because this is getting out of control.””

“Then help me understand the financial transfers.””

Her face went blank.

“What transfers?””

“The ones from our household account.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Daniel, I can explain those.””

“Good. Explain them.””

She glanced around before speaking.

“I was trying to help someone.””

“Who?””

“My sister.””

I blinked.

“Your sister hasn't spoken to us in nearly two years.””

“She needed money.””

“How much?””

“I don't know.””

“Vanessa.””

She pressed her hands together.

“Twenty thousand. Maybe a little more.””

The number matched the amount the bank had flagged.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you would have said no.””

“Did you take money from our joint account to give to your sister?””

“She was desperate.””

“And Maya's medicine was too expensive?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to replace it.””

“When?””

“Soon.””

I stared at her.

“You used our daughter's medical needs as a place to save money while sending thousands of dollars to someone else.””

“I didn't think Maya's condition was serious!””

“You don't get to decide that without listening to her doctor.””

She looked away.

Then she whispered, “You don't know what my sister threatened to do.””

I waited.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I can't tell you here.””

“Then tell me somewhere else. But I need the truth.””

She took a trembling breath.

“My sister didn't ask me for the money.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She told me if I didn't send it, she'd tell you something about our marriage.””

I stared at her.

“What could she possibly tell me?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“Something that happened before Maya was born.””

For a moment, the hospital corridor seemed unnaturally quiet.

“What happened before Maya was born?””

She looked toward the room, then back at me.

“Your sister-in-law has known about it for years. She said she'd expose everything if I stopped paying her.””

I felt a cold pressure behind my ribs.

“What exactly does she know?””

Vanessa began to cry.

May you like

Then she whispered a sentence that changed the meaning of every conversation we'd had that week.

“She knows Maya isn't the only child I was supposed to have.””
