Chapter 9: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

For a moment, Naomi couldn't understand the words.

She looked at Marcus, waiting for him to deny them.

He didn't.

Detective Ross asked Danielle to repeat her statement. Detective Ellis documented the response and made arrangements for the storage device to be secured and examined.

Marcus stood beside the sofa, his hands hanging uselessly at his sides.

“Danielle, you said you would keep it safe.””

Danielle stared at him.

“Safe? You told me to destroy it.””

“I told you to make sure nobody misunderstood it.””

“You said it would ruin your life.””

“Because it would!””

Ross stepped between them.

“Neither of you will discuss the contents of that device until we've established what it contains.””

Naomi sat down slowly.

Her daughter's handwriting remained in her mind.

If anything happens to me, look at the last recording.

She looked toward the storage device.

“Is that where the recording is?””

Ross answered carefully.

“We don't know yet. The device will need to be examined.””

“But it might be there?””

“Yes.””

Naomi nodded, tears running down her face.

“Then please find it.””

Ellis approached her.

“We'll make every effort to recover relevant material. I can't promise what we'll find, but we'll preserve the evidence.””

Marcus moved toward Naomi.

She raised one hand.

“Don't.””

He stopped.

“Naomi, please. I need to explain.””

“You've had months to explain.””

“I was afraid.””

“So was Lily.””

Marcus's face crumpled.

“I never wanted her to be hurt.””

Naomi looked at him.

“You gave our child something without making sure it was safe. You hid the paperwork. You let me believe her doctors had approved everything. And while she was getting worse, you went on vacation.””

Marcus began to cry.

“I thought she was going to recover.””

“Did you call her doctor before you gave her that medicine?””

He looked away.

Naomi's voice became quieter.

“Marcus. Did you?””

He shook his head.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Ross instructed Marcus to stop answering questions until he had obtained legal advice. He then asked Danielle to explain how the storage device had come into her possession.

Danielle took a shaky breath.

“Marcus brought it to my office three days before the trip.””

“What did he say was on it?””

“He said Lily had recorded something on the old phone. He wanted me to check whether the file had been copied anywhere else.””

“Did you listen to it?””

Danielle hesitated.

“Yes.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Naomi rose.

“You listened to my daughter's recording?””

Danielle looked at her helplessly.

“I didn't know what it would contain. Marcus told me it was a recording of a private conversation.””

“And what did you hear?””

Danielle's eyes filled.

“I heard Lily asking questions about the medicine.””

Naomi pressed her hand against her mouth.

“What questions?””

“She asked why her father had given her something that made her feel strange. She said she wanted her mother.””

Naomi began sobbing.

Detective Ellis moved toward her, offering a box of tissues from the side table.

Naomi accepted one without taking her eyes off Danielle.

“What did you do after you listened?””

“I called Marcus.””

“And?””

“I told him the recording needed to be preserved and that he needed to speak with a lawyer and the appropriate medical professionals.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You told me the file was corrupted.””

“I said the copy I had received was incomplete.””

“You said nobody would be able to use it!””

“I never promised that!””

Ross looked at Danielle.

“Why did you retain the device if you believed the recording was important evidence?””

Danielle swallowed.

“Because I was afraid Marcus would destroy it.””

Naomi stared at her.

“You were afraid of him destroying evidence, but you kept it hidden instead of taking it to the authorities?””

Danielle lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was involved. I gave him the information that led to the package. I didn't want to lose my career. I thought I could convince him to do the right thing without making everything public.””

Naomi let out a broken laugh.

“You were protecting yourselves while my daughter was dying.””

Danielle began crying.

“I know.””

“No. You know you're in trouble. That isn't the same thing.””

Ross asked Danielle to identify the person who had supplied the package. She gave him a name and agreed to provide her correspondence, though he made clear that every claim would need independent verification.

Meanwhile, Ellis received an update from the technical team examining the older phone.

She listened, then approached Ross.

“The device contains a recoverable audio file. Its metadata is consistent with the period we're investigating, but the file's authenticity and full context still need to be verified.””

Naomi stood immediately.

“Can I hear it?””

Ross looked at her compassionately.

“We need to preserve the original and make a proper copy first. We also need to verify the recording before treating it as evidence of what happened.””

Naomi nodded, fighting to control her breathing.

“Please.””

Ellis spoke quietly into her phone, coordinating with the technical team.

Several minutes later, she returned with a department-issued tablet. Ross checked the accompanying information before setting it on the table.

“We've confirmed this is a recoverable audio file associated with the device,” he explained.

“We haven't established every detail surrounding its creation. We'll listen carefully and document what it contains.””

Naomi sat beside him.

Marcus stood several feet away, unable to look at her.

Vanessa remained near the doorway, her face wet with tears. Danielle sat motionless in her chair.

Ross pressed play.

At first, there was only faint background noise.

Then Lily's small voice filled the room.

“Daddy?””

A soft rustling sound followed.

Marcus's knees nearly buckled.

“I'm here, baby,” his recorded voice answered.

Naomi covered her mouth.

On the recording, Lily sounded tired but alert.

“Why does my medicine taste different?””

There was a pause.

“Sometimes medicine tastes different, sweetheart.””

“But Mommy said this bottle isn't the one the doctor gave us.””

Naomi closed her eyes.

She remembered saying those exact words after noticing the unfamiliar label. She had asked Marcus whether he had checked with the doctor.

He had told her everything was fine.

The recording continued.

“Daddy, are you sure it's okay?””

Marcus's recorded voice sounded strained.

“Yes, Lily. It's okay.””

“But why did you tell Auntie Danielle not to tell Mommy?””

Danielle began shaking.

Marcus looked at her in horror.

On the recording, Lily continued.

“I heard you on the phone. You said Mommy couldn't know about the package.””

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus's recorded voice spoke again.

“Lily, you need to forget that conversation.””

“But I'm scared.””

“There's nothing to be scared of.””

“My tummy hurts.””

Naomi gripped the edge of the table.

“Baby,” she whispered, though the recording couldn't hear her.

Lily's voice grew smaller.

“Can you call Mommy?””

The recorded Marcus hesitated.

“She needs to rest.””

“But I want Mommy.””

“Lily, please don't make this difficult.””

Naomi recoiled.

The words seemed to strike her physically.

On the recording, Lily began to cry.

“I won't tell anybody. I promise. I just want my mommy.””

Marcus covered his face.

Ross kept the recording playing.

Then Lily said something that made Vanessa rise so abruptly that her chair toppled backward.

“Daddy, I saw the other message, too.””

The recorded Marcus went silent.

“What message?””

“The one you sent Auntie Danielle. The one that said if anything happened to me, nobody could know where the medicine came from.””

The room froze.

Naomi slowly turned toward her husband.

Marcus looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

On the recording, his voice became sharp.

“Lily, who showed you that?””

“Nobody. It was on your phone.””

“Did you tell Mommy?””

“No.””

“Did you tell anyone else?””

“No, Daddy.””

A small sniffle came through the speakers.

Then Lily whispered, “But I think Mommy should know.””

The recording ended with a soft click.

Nobody moved.

Naomi stared at the tablet, unable to breathe properly.

Ross paused the device and documented the point at which the file ended.

“This is deeply concerning,” he said, “but we'll need to verify the surrounding evidence before drawing conclusions about the medication or the cause of Lily's death.””

Marcus sank onto the sofa.

“I didn't mean for any of this to happen.””

Naomi turned toward him.

“What did you mean to happen?””

He stared at the floor.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

Marcus began crying.

“The business deal. The medication. Everything.””

Ross looked at him.

“What business deal?””

Marcus raised his head.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that the recording had connected the secrets he had spent months keeping separate.

He swallowed hard.

“Danielle didn't just help me find the package.””

Vanessa slowly turned toward him.

“Marcus, don't.””

He looked at Naomi.

“The company that supplied it was connected to a project I was investing in. I thought if Lily improved, the treatment could help other families, and my investment would be worth something.””

Naomi stared at him in disbelief.

“You used our daughter to protect an investment?””

“I thought it would help her!””

“You thought?””

His shoulders shook.

Ross closed his notebook.

“Mr. Reed, we need to establish the complete financial and medical history. You'll have the opportunity to provide information through the appropriate process.””

Marcus nodded, barely able to speak.

Then Ellis's phone rang again.

She listened for several seconds before looking at Ross.

“The preliminary examination of the storage device recovered another file. It's not audio.””

Ross turned toward her.

“What is it?””

“A photograph of a document.””

Naomi stood.

“What document?””

Ellis looked at the screen, then at Marcus.

“It's a laboratory report bearing Lily's name. The date is from before the first hospital admission.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“No.””

Ross held out his hand for the phone.

Ellis showed him the image.

His face remained controlled, but his eyes narrowed as he examined the date.

Naomi looked between them.

“What does it say?””

Ellis lowered the phone.

“We haven't verified the report's origin or meaning yet.””

Marcus backed away from the table.

“You can't use that. It was never supposed to be there.””

Ross looked directly at him.

“Why was it never supposed to be there, Mr. Reed?””

Marcus's lips trembled.

Then he whispered, “Because the report wasn't supposed to exist.””

May you like

Naomi stared at him.

And suddenly, she understood that Lily's last recording might not have been the only thing her daughter had tried to leave behind.
