Chapter 7: The Daughter Who Never Left
Nobody touched the phone.
Not Bear.
Not Evelyn.
Not me.
The screen kept glowing in his hand.
LILY CARTER.
A name that should have belonged to a memory.
A photograph.
A story people told quietly.
But not a ringing phone.
Bear stared at it like the device had become something impossible.
His breathing changed.
For twenty years, he had imagined a thousand ways he would find his daughter.
He imagined a hospital.
A grave.
A stranger bringing him a message.
He never imagined this.
A phone call.
Right in front of me.
“Answer it,” Evelyn whispered.
Bear looked at her.
“What if it’s not her?””
The question was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Because hope can be more terrifying than loss.
When someone is gone, you learn how to live with the emptiness.
But when they might come back…
Everything becomes uncertain again.
The phone rang a second time.
Bear finally pressed the button.
“Hello?””
For a moment, there was nothing.
Then a voice.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“Dad?””
Bear closed his eyes.
The sound broke him.
His shoulders dropped.
His hand covered his mouth.
No one spoke.
No one wanted to interrupt twenty years of pain ending in one word.
“Lily.””
His voice barely came out.
“My God.””
A quiet sob came from the phone.
“I’m sorry.””
Bear shook his head.
“No.””
He wiped his face quickly.
“No, don’t say sorry.””
“I should have come back.””
“You should have.””
The honesty surprised me.
But there was no anger in his voice.
Only heartbreak.
“You should have.””
A long silence followed.
Then Bear whispered:
“I looked for you.””
“I know.””
“I thought you were dead.””
“I know.””
“I buried you.””
The words made everyone look away.
Even Daniel.
Because some pain is too personal to watch.
Lily’s voice trembled.
“I wanted to come home.””
Bear looked down.
“Then why didn’t you?””
The question sat there.
Waiting.
Finally, Lily answered.
“Because Marcus found me.””
Everyone froze.
Bear’s expression changed.
“What?””
“He found my location.””
Daniel immediately looked around.
“Is this call secure?””
Lily paused.
“No.””
Bear looked at him.
“Then why did you answer?””
“Because I had no other choice.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Dad, listen carefully.””
Bear straightened.
“I’m listening.””
“You need to get Mia away from the city.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
Lily went silent.
Then:
“Because Marcus knows about the necklace.””
Bear looked at me.
“He already knows.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“He knows you have it. He doesn’t know what it does.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What does it do?””
Lily went quiet again.
“Who is that?””
Bear looked at him.
“Someone who helped you.””
Another pause.
Then Lily whispered:
“Daniel?””
Daniel took the phone.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
“Lily.””
“You’re with them?””
“Yes.””
A shaky breath came through.
“Thank God.””
Everyone looked surprised.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She thought you were dead.””
“I almost was.””
Bear took the phone back.
“What does the necklace unlock?””
Lily didn’t answer.
Instead, she asked:
“Is Mia there?””
I stepped closer.
“Yes.””
My voice sounded strange.
Small.
“Mom?””
The silence afterward hurt.
Because I could feel her crying.
“I’ve dreamed about hearing that.””
I swallowed.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
The question came out again.
But this time, I needed the answer from her.
Not anyone else.
“I tried.””
Her voice cracked.
“More than once.””
“Then why?””
“Because every time I got close, Marcus knew.””
I frowned.
“How?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily said:
“Because someone was telling him.””
Bear looked at his men.
The suspicion returned.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
Lily sounded exhausted.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
“He has someone close to you.””
The words landed heavily.
Bear looked at the bikers.
The men who had followed him for years.
The people he trusted.
No one spoke.
I saw the doubt on their faces too.
Lily continued.
“Dad, the night I disappeared, I didn’t just find evidence against Marcus.””
“What else?””
“I found out he was planning to take control of everything you built.””
Bear’s jaw tightened.
“My club?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“Because he wasn’t trying to destroy you.””
A pause.
“He was trying to replace you.””
The street became silent.
Daniel looked at Bear.
Bear looked like he was remembering things.
Small things.
Moments from years ago.
Things that had seemed normal.
But maybe weren’t.
Lily continued.
“Marcus always wanted power.””
Bear whispered:
“I gave him a second chance.””
“I know.””
“I trusted him.””
“I know.””
The pain in her voice matched his.
“That’s why I was scared.””
I touched the necklace.
“Mom?””
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“What’s inside it?””
The question changed the mood.
Everyone looked at me.
Lily became quiet.
Finally, she answered:
“Something I recorded for you.””
My heart stopped.
“For me?””
“Yes.””
“A message?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you just tell Grandma?””
“Because if Marcus found out Evelyn had it, he would hurt her.””
My grandmother covered her mouth.
“And if Bear had it?””
Lily was silent.
Then:
“He would have gone after Marcus.””
Bear didn’t deny it.
Because he would have.
“What kind of message?””
Lily took a breath.
“A truth.””
I waited.
“About your father.””
I looked at Bear.
“What truth?””
The phone went quiet.
Then Lily said:
“The truth is… Bear isn’t the only person who lost someone that night.””
Nobody understood.
“What does that mean?””
Before Lily could answer, a sound came through the phone.
A door closing.
Then another voice.
A man’s voice.
“Mia.””
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t Marcus.
But I knew that voice.
I had heard it before.
Not in person.
In the recordings my grandmother played sometimes.
Old family videos.
A voice from a past I barely remembered.
My father.
I looked at Bear.
He looked confused.
“Who is that?””
Lily’s breathing changed.
Fear.
Pure fear.
“Dad, hang up.””
“What?””
“Hang up now.””
The voice on the phone came again.
Closer.
“Mia, if you can hear me…”
My hand covered my mouth.
Because I knew.
I knew that voice.
Even though I hadn’t heard it in years.
“Mom?””
Lily screamed.
“NO!””
The phone suddenly went silent.
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Bear looked at Daniel.
“What just happened?””
Daniel stared at the dead screen.
His face was pale.
“She wasn’t alone.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“It means Marcus didn’t find Lily.””
A pause.
“He found someone else first.””
Bear’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
And the answer destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.
“Your father.””
I felt the ground disappear.
Because my father was supposed to be gone.
My father was supposed to be a mystery.
But now everyone was looking at me like the past had returned.
And somewhere out there…
A man who had vanished from my life for eight years knew exactly where I was.
Bear looked at the paper with the address to the old repair shop.
Then at me.
Then at the road.
“We go there now.””
Nobody questioned him.
Because for the first time, we all understood something.
The necklace wasn’t leading us to the truth.
It was leading the truth back to us.
And as we climbed onto the motorcycles, my grandmother grabbed my hand.
“Mia.””
I looked at her.
Her eyes were full of fear.
“Whatever you see there…”
She swallowed.
“Remember that your mother loved you.””
I nodded.
But before I could ask why she said it like that, my phone buzzed.
I had never given my number to anyone.
Only my grandmother knew it.
I looked at the screen.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
May you like
My blood turned cold.
*“Mia, don’t trust Bear. He’s the reason your mother disappeared.””*
