Chapter 8: The Man Who Owned the Records

Elena pulled Maya behind the wide concrete pillar beside the courtyard entrance.

“Stay here,” she whispered.

Maya stared at her mother.

“I've been told to stay somewhere for my entire life. I'm done.””

Elena's face crumpled.

“I know. I know what they've done to you. But if he sees you, he will know the search is over.””

“What search?””

Elena looked toward the glass doors.

The man had entered the building.

Principal Harris was standing in his path, while Dr. Reed remained several feet behind her, clutching his briefcase.

Maya watched the stranger approach.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in an expensive charcoal suit. His dark skin was smooth, his hair closely cropped, and his expression carried the effortless confidence of someone accustomed to being obeyed.

He smiled at Principal Harris.

“Janet. It's been a long time.””

Principal Harris didn't return the smile.

“Marcus.””

Maya looked sharply at Elena.

“Who is Marcus?””

“My sister's husband,” Elena whispered.

Maya frowned.

“Your sister?””

Elena nodded.

“Marcus married my younger sister, Danielle, shortly before I disappeared.””

Maya felt another piece of her family history shift.

“I thought you were an only child.””

“That's what the records say.””

Elena's voice trembled.

“Marcus made sure of that.””

Through the glass, Maya watched Principal Harris hold out her hand.

“Give me the folder, Marcus.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“You haven't changed. Still issuing orders as if the world owes you obedience.””

“Give me the folder.””

“I'm here for Maya Bennett.””

Principal Harris stepped in front of him.

“She is a student at this school.””

“Not anymore. Her graduation is today, isn't it?””

His smile widened.

“Congratulations are in order.””

Principal Harris's hands curled into fists.

“You have no business here.””

Marcus opened the folder.

“I have a document that says otherwise.””

He pulled out a sheet of paper and held it up.

Maya couldn't read the words from where she stood, but she saw the official seal at the top.

Elena made a strangled sound.

“What is it?”” Maya whispered.

“A guardianship order.””

Maya turned.

“But I'm eighteen.””

“Exactly.””

Elena's expression became desperate.

“Unless someone has filed a petition claiming you're legally incompetent or that your identity was established through fraud.””

Maya stared at her.

“Can he do that?””

“He can file anything. That doesn't mean he can win.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

Elena looked at the man through the glass.

“Because he doesn't need to win in court if he can frighten everyone into handing you over.””

Inside the hallway, Marcus lowered the document.

“Janet, you have two choices. You can cooperate, or I can explain to the school board why you've concealed a student whose identity is connected to a sealed medical investigation.””

Principal Harris lifted her chin.

“Tell them whatever you like.””

Marcus's smile vanished.

“You always were stubborn.””

“And you always mistook cruelty for authority.””

He stepped closer.

“You should have listened to Richard.””

The mention of her late husband made Principal Harris stiffen.

“Don't you dare speak his name.””

“Why? Because you finally understand what he did?””

Dr. Reed stepped forward.

“Marcus, the records need to be released to the proper authorities.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“Samuel. I wondered how long you'd hide behind your medical license.””

“I won't hide anymore.””

Marcus laughed.

“You signed the documents.””

“And I will testify to that.””

“Then your testimony will have to compete with the official records.””

Marcus tapped the folder.

“Records I helped preserve.””

Maya felt Elena's hand trembling around hers.

“Mom, what did he do?””

Elena swallowed.

“Your father was Marcus's older brother.””

The revelation struck Maya like a physical blow.

“My father?””

“His name was Daniel Harris. He died before you were born.””

“Was he the man who—”

“No.”” Elena shook her head quickly.

“Daniel loved me. He wanted both of you. He wanted to take us away from the family business and start over.””

“What family business?””

Elena looked toward Marcus.

“The hospital network. The medical centers, the research grants, the charitable foundation. Richard helped manage the board. Marcus controlled the money.””

Maya stared through the glass.

“And my father?””

“Daniel discovered that money was being diverted from a medical program for vulnerable newborns. He planned to expose it. Then he died in a car accident.””

Maya's breath caught.

“Was it an accident?””

Elena didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

“After Daniel died,” Elena continued, “Marcus told me that if I spoke about the financial records, he would make sure I lost both of you. He knew people in the hospital administration. He knew people in the courts. He knew exactly which documents could be changed and which signatures could make a lie look official.””

Maya glanced at the silver locket.

“And the numbers inside this?””

“Daniel put them there. He told me they would lead to the original evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Elena's eyes filled.

“The reason your sister was taken.””

Inside the hallway, Marcus suddenly looked toward the courtyard.

His gaze swept across the students, the graduation banners, and the glass doors.

Then his eyes stopped on the pillar where Maya and Elena were standing.

Elena pulled her daughter back.

Too late.

Marcus smiled.

“There you are.””

He walked toward the doors.

Principal Harris grabbed his arm.

“Don't.””

Marcus shook her off.

“You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.””

He stepped into the courtyard.

Maya moved in front of Elena.

Marcus studied her face, then the torn gown, then the locket hanging against her chest.

For a moment, his smile faltered.

“You look remarkably like Daniel,” he said.

Maya stared at him.

“You took my sister.””

Marcus adjusted his cuff.

“I protected this family from a scandal that would have destroyed it.””

“You stole a baby.””

“I arranged for an infant to be placed with people who could care for her.””

“Then why did you tell everyone she died?””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Because some truths are more dangerous than lies.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Where is Mara?””

Marcus looked at her.

For the first time, his expression became genuinely cold.

“You should have stayed gone.””

“I asked you a question.””

“And I answered it twelve years ago.””

“No,” Elena said.

“You gave me a death certificate with a forged signature. You told me my daughter was dead, and you expected me to accept it.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“You should have accepted it.””

Maya grabbed Elena's hand.

“Mom, don't.””

But Elena didn't look away.

“I found the original transfer records,” she said.

“I know where Mara was sent. And I know who paid for it.””

Marcus's face changed.

Behind him, Principal Harris stepped into the courtyard with Dr. Reed.

Marcus glanced toward them, then back at Elena.

“You have no proof.””

Elena lifted her chin.

“The locket contains the case number. Samuel has the medical records. And Janet has the original letter Richard sent her before he died.””

Principal Harris froze.

Maya turned toward her.

“What letter?””

Marcus's face went white.

For the first time, the powerful man seemed uncertain.

He took a step toward Principal Harris.

“Janet. Don't.””

The principal looked at him with quiet fury.

“You knew Richard had sent me that letter.””

Marcus said nothing.

She continued.

“You knew he confessed what you had done.””

Maya stared at her grandmother.

“You have a confession?””

Principal Harris slowly nodded.

“I found the letter after Richard died. I was afraid to report it because Marcus threatened to make Elena's disappearance look like something I had arranged.””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“You knew?””

“I knew enough to be afraid,” Principal Harris whispered.

“And I let fear make my decisions.””

Maya stepped away from both women.

“Everybody knew something.””

Her voice broke.

“Everybody knew something, and I was the only one left wondering why my mother never came home.””

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

He pressed a number.

“It's me,” he said.

“We have a problem.””

He listened for a moment.

Then he looked directly at Maya.

“Bring her in.””

Elena grabbed her daughter's hand.

From the far side of the courtyard, two men in dark suits began walking toward them.

Principal Harris moved in front of Maya.

Dr. Reed clutched his briefcase to his chest.

May you like

And Marcus smiled again.

“Let's see how brave everyone is when the other daughter arrives.””
