Chapter 2: The Message on the Watch
Malcolm remained in the foyer, staring at the closed front door as though he expected Danielle to walk back through it.
Outside, the faint sound of a police radio crackled before fading into the distance.
“What did she mean?”” he finally asked.
Naomi placed the velvet jewelry pouch on the marble console table.
“I imagine she's upset about being caught.””
Malcolm turned sharply.
“Caught? Danielle has worked for us for three years. She practically raised Eli. Are you telling me you watched two officers put handcuffs on her without even calling me?””
“I did what was necessary.””
“You couldn't wait ten minutes?””
Naomi folded her arms.
“Malcolm, don't turn this into another situation where you defend everyone except your own wife.””
He stared at her.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
“Everything,” Naomi replied.
“You give people access to our home, our belongings, our son. Then, when something goes wrong, you look at me as though I'm the problem.””
Malcolm glanced at the jewelry.
“Did you actually see Danielle take these?””
Naomi's jaw tightened.
“I found them in her room.””
“That wasn't my question.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
The bright living room beyond the foyer remained immaculate. Cream-colored sofas faced a glass coffee table. Family photographs lined a shelf beside the windows. In one picture, Eli sat on Malcolm's shoulders while Danielle stood beside them, laughing at something outside the frame.
Malcolm looked at the photograph.
Naomi noticed.
“Don't,” she said.
“Don't what?””
“Don't make this emotional because you feel guilty about trusting her.””
“I'm asking a simple question.””
“And I'm giving you a simple answer. I found your missing jewelry in her room.””
Malcolm exhaled through his nose.
“Then we'll review the security footage.””
Naomi went completely still.
Only for a second.
But Malcolm saw it.
“What?”” he asked.
“Nothing.””
“You just looked frightened.””
“I'm furious, Malcolm. There's a difference.””
Before he could respond, a small hand slipped into his.
Eli stood beside him, his cheeks wet, his curls disheveled from crying.
“Dad?””
Malcolm immediately crouched.
“Hey, buddy. I'm here.””
“Are they going to put Danielle in jail?””
“I don't know yet.””
“She didn't steal anything.””
Malcolm swallowed.
“I hope you're right, champ.””
Eli stared at him with a seriousness no six-year-old should have needed to develop.
“You have to listen to me.””
Naomi stepped forward.
“Eli, sweetheart, this is an adult matter.””
“No!”” Eli shouted.
The word echoed through the foyer.
Naomi blinked in surprise.
Eli grabbed Malcolm's hand with both of his.
“Danielle left you something.””
Malcolm looked at the smartwatch.
“What do you mean?””
“She told me what to do if the police took her away.””
Naomi's expression changed.
“What exactly did she tell you?””
Eli shrank closer to his father.
Malcolm straightened slowly.
“Naomi, give us a minute.””
“I'm his mother.””
“And I'm his father. Give us a minute.””
Naomi's lips parted, but Malcolm had already guided Eli toward the living room.
He settled onto the edge of the cream sofa and lifted his son onto his knee.
“Okay, buddy. Show me.””
Eli tapped the screen of his smartwatch.
A small audio icon appeared.
Malcolm frowned.
“You can record messages on that thing?””
“Danielle showed me how.””
“Why would she do that?””
Eli looked toward the foyer.
“Because she said somebody might tell a lie about her.””
Malcolm's breathing slowed.
“What kind of lie?””
Eli didn't answer. He pressed the audio icon again.
A soft electronic tone sounded.
Then Danielle's voice emerged from the tiny speaker.
Clear.
Steady.
And unmistakably frightened.
“If they arrest me, check the nursery camera.””
Malcolm froze.
The room seemed to grow silent around him.
He played the message again.
“If they arrest me, check the nursery camera.””
Naomi stood just inside the living room entrance.
Her fingers curled around the edge of the doorway.
Malcolm looked up.
“Why would Danielle say that?””
Naomi recovered quickly.
“Because she's trying to manipulate you.””
“Manipulate me into checking our own security system?””
“She knew she was about to be caught. People do desperate things when they're cornered.””
Malcolm reached for his phone.
“Then the footage will settle it.””
Naomi moved away from the doorway.
“Malcolm, don't be ridiculous. The nursery camera is unreliable. You know that.””
He paused.
“No, I don't.””
“It disconnects all the time.””
“Since when?””
“Since we installed it.””
Malcolm stared at her.
He had installed the system himself after Eli was born. He remembered testing every camera, checking every angle, and watching Naomi laugh at him for spending an entire Saturday examining security settings.
The nursery camera had worked perfectly.
Until now, apparently.
He opened the home security app.
Eli leaned over his arm.
“Danielle said two thirteen.””
Malcolm glanced down.
“Two thirteen what?””
“In the morning.””
His thumb stopped moving.
The camera interface loaded. A grid of rooms appeared on the screen: front entrance, living room, upstairs hallway, nursery.
He selected the nursery.
A timeline appeared.
Malcolm dragged his finger backward through the recordings until the date and time aligned.
*NURSERY CAMERA — 2:13 AM.*
A thumbnail appeared beneath the timestamp.
The nursery door was open.
Someone stood inside.
A woman wearing a beige dress.
Carrying a velvet jewelry pouch.
Malcolm's eyes lifted slowly from the phone.
Naomi was standing only a few feet away.
The same beige dress.
The same woman.
The same pouch.
“Naomi,” he whispered.
She moved.
One sudden step toward him.
“DON'T PLAY THAT!””
Malcolm jerked the phone against his chest.
Eli screamed and scrambled off the sofa.
Naomi stopped, breathing hard.
For the first time since Danielle's arrest, the polished mask had completely fallen away.
Malcolm stared at his wife.
“What is in that video?””
“Give me the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because you don't understand what you're looking at!””
“Then explain it!””
Naomi reached for him again.
Malcolm stepped backward, raising the phone out of reach.
Eli clutched his father's leg.
“Dad, play it,” he whispered.
Naomi looked down at him.
“Eli, you need to go upstairs.””
“No.””
“NOW.””
The boy flinched.
Malcolm immediately placed himself between them.
“Don't speak to him like that.””
Naomi stared at her husband, then at the phone.
Her voice dropped to a trembling whisper.
“If you press play, Malcolm, everything you think you know about this family will change.””
His thumb hovered over the screen.
“Maybe it's time it did.””
He pressed the button.
The thumbnail began to move.
Naomi entered the nursery carrying the velvet pouch.
Then she turned toward the camera.
And looked directly into the lens.
Malcolm's mouth fell open.
Because the expression on her face wasn't surprise.
It was recognition.
As though she had known, all along, that someone would eventually watch.
The screen continued playing.
Malcolm leaned closer.
Naomi lunged one final time.
He twisted away, and the phone slipped from his hand onto the sofa.
Eli snatched it before it could fall to the floor.
“Dad!””
Malcolm caught the device.
On the screen, the nursery door began to close.
Behind them, Naomi whispered a sentence that made his blood run cold.
“You don't know what Danielle did before she came to work for us.””
Malcolm turned toward her.
“What does that mean?””
Naomi's eyes filled with tears, but she didn't look remorseful.
She looked terrified.
Then the video reached the next frame.
And Malcolm saw someone else reflected in the nursery mirror.
May you like
Someone who wasn't supposed to be in the house at two thirteen in the morning.
