Chapter 6: The DNA Test That Changed Everything

Marcus replayed Evelyn's final sentence three times.

Daniel is not the only man who could be Leo's father.

Each time, the words sounded less like a confession and more like a warning.

Amara stood behind him, one hand pressed against her mouth. Grant had moved toward the door, but Marcus blocked his path before he could leave.

"You're not going anywhere.""

Grant stopped.

"I wasn't planning to.""

"Good. Because you're going to explain why you knew Daniel was alive.""

Grant looked at the screen.

"Can we watch the rest first?""

Marcus hesitated, then turned back to the video.

Evelyn shifted in her chair, wincing as she adjusted the blanket over her legs.

"I don't know who will see this," she continued.

"I don't know whether Marcus will ever find it, or whether Daniel will destroy it before he gets the chance. But I need someone to know what happened.""

She glanced off-camera.

For a moment, her expression changed.

She looked frightened.

Then she leaned toward the lens.

"Three years ago, Daniel came to me with a DNA report. He claimed Leo was his biological son. I told him he was mistaken.""

Marcus gripped the edge of the desk.

"I had never been unfaithful to Marcus," Evelyn said.

"I loved my husband. But Daniel insisted the test was genuine.""

She paused, swallowing painfully.

"He showed me a report from a private laboratory. It stated that he and Leo shared a biological relationship with a probability of more than ninety-nine percent.""

Marcus felt his stomach twist.

"That report could have been forged," Amara whispered.

Evelyn seemed to answer her from the screen.

"I wanted to believe it was a lie. I demanded a second test, conducted independently. The results were different.""

She closed her eyes.

"The second test excluded Daniel as Leo's biological father.""

Marcus exhaled sharply.

"Then it's settled.""

But Evelyn continued before he could find relief.

"Daniel claimed the second test had been manipulated. He said someone had switched the samples. I thought he was desperate, perhaps even delusional. Then he showed me something I couldn't explain.""

She lifted a paper toward the camera.

"A copy of the original laboratory submission form.""

The video zoomed in slightly.

A date. A laboratory reference number. A signature.

Marcus leaned toward the screen.

The signature belonged to Grant Miller.

He turned.

Grant stood motionless near the doorway.

"You signed the DNA submission?""

Grant closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

Marcus felt an almost unbearable surge of anger.

"You tested my son without my permission?""

"I was following instructions.""

"Whose?""

Grant looked at Amara, then back at Marcus.

"Daniel's.""

Marcus seized the front of his jacket.

"You were working for him?""

"Not at first.""

"Explain!""

Grant's voice broke.

"Daniel approached me before the accident. He said there was a problem with the company accounts and that he needed help verifying something. I thought it was a financial investigation.""

"What happened?""

"He gave me a sample and asked me to arrange a private paternity test.""

Marcus released him with a shove.

"And you agreed?""

"I was paid to deliver a sealed package to the laboratory. I didn't know what was inside until later.""

"You expect me to believe that?""

"No. I expect you to check the records.""

Grant reached into his jacket and removed a folded sheet of paper.

"I kept a copy.""

Marcus snatched it.

The report was dated three years earlier, several months before Daniel's supposed death.

The result was clearly printed.

*PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.98%.*

The alleged father: Daniel Cross.

The child: Leo Bennett.

Marcus stared at the numbers.

"Where did the sample come from?""

Grant hesitated.

"Daniel said it was Leo's.""

"Did you witness the collection?""

"No.""

"Then this proves nothing.""

"That's what I told Daniel after Evelyn's second test came back negative.""

Marcus looked up.

"And what did he say?""

Grant's face tightened.

"He said the second report was fabricated.""

Marcus threw the paper onto the desk.

"Of course he did.""

Amara moved closer.

"Marcus, we need to find the original laboratory records. If the tests conflict, there has to be an explanation.""

"There's already an explanation. Daniel was trying to destroy my marriage.""

"But why?""

Marcus looked at the video.

Evelyn was speaking again.

"I never knew which report was genuine. I asked the laboratory to investigate. The technician who handled the samples disappeared before I could meet him. The records were altered, and the doctor who ordered the second test refused to speak to me.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I told Marcus none of this because I was afraid he'd confront Daniel. I thought I could resolve it quietly. I thought I had time.""

She wiped her cheek.

"I was wrong.""

Marcus felt a familiar, crushing guilt settle over him.

He remembered the arguments. Evelyn's insistence that he cancel a business trip. Her sudden refusal to let Daniel visit their home. The way she'd looked at Marcus during their final argument, as if she wanted to tell him something but couldn't find the courage.

He had accused her of shutting him out.

She had apologized.

And he had accepted the apology without asking what she was sorry for.

"Evelyn," he whispered to the screen.

The video continued.

"If Daniel comes back, don't assume he wants revenge. He may believe he has a legitimate claim to Leo. But there is something he doesn't know.""

Marcus leaned closer.

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"Neither DNA report was the original result.""

Amara sucked in a breath.

"What?""

Evelyn reached for a glass of water, but her hand shook so badly that she had to put it down.

"When Leo was born, the hospital conducted routine blood tests. A separate genetic screening was ordered because of a medical concern in our family. The results revealed a discrepancy that I couldn't explain.""

Marcus stared at the screen.

"What discrepancy?""

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

"Leo's blood type was incompatible with both mine and Marcus's.""

Silence filled the room.

Marcus shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

Amara's face had gone pale.

"Not necessarily," she said quietly.

"It depends on the actual blood types and the circumstances.""

Marcus barely heard her.

He remembered the hospital's explanation. The nurses had told him Leo's records were being reviewed because of a clerical error. He had been exhausted, overwhelmed, and focused on Evelyn's recovery.

He had signed the corrected paperwork without questioning it.

Had someone changed the records?

Evelyn's voice trembled.

"I asked the hospital to investigate. They told me the sample had been mislabeled. I wanted to believe them. Then I discovered that the original record had been removed from the file.""

She leaned closer.

"Marcus, if you find this video, do not rely on the DNA tests Daniel gave you. Do not rely on the hospital records. Find the original sample submission log from the night Leo was born.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because someone changed something before our son ever left that hospital.""

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus turned toward Grant.

"Find the hospital records.""

"I'll need the original laboratory name.""

"Then find it.""

Grant nodded and left the study.

Marcus remained staring at the dark screen.

Amara sat on the edge of the desk.

"She was trying to protect Leo," she whispered.

"From Daniel?""

"Maybe.""

"Or from me?""

Amara didn't answer.

That silence hurt more than any accusation.

Marcus walked to the window. The city lights blurred behind his reflection.

He had spent two years believing that Evelyn's death was a tragedy he could never undo. Now he was discovering that the final months of her life might have been shaped by secrets he had been too distracted—or too arrogant—to recognize.

He had given her everything he thought she needed.

Money. Security. Doctors. A beautiful home.

But he had not given her the one thing she might have needed most.

The freedom to tell him the truth without fearing what he would do with it.

His phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

He answered cautiously.

"Marcus Bennett.""

A woman's voice replied.

"Mr. Bennett, my name is Dr. Hannah Reed. I was the physician who reviewed your wife's medical records before she died.""

Marcus straightened.

"Why are you calling me?""

"Because I heard someone accessed the old hospital archive tonight.""

His grip tightened around the phone.

"How would you know that?""

"Because I received a message warning me not to speak to you.""

Marcus glanced at Amara.

"What do you know about Evelyn's death?""

The woman breathed unsteadily.

"Your wife didn't die from the condition we diagnosed.""

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.

"What?""

"We found an irregularity in her medication history after she died. I tried to investigate, but the records were altered. I was told to stop asking questions.""

"Who told you that?""

A long pause.

Then Dr. Reed whispered, "The man who paid for your wife's treatment.""

Marcus's mind raced.

He had paid for everything himself.

Every specialist. Every prescription. Every experimental procedure.

"That's impossible," he said.

"I know what the financial records show. But the payments for one particular treatment came through a private medical foundation.""

"Whose foundation?""

Dr. Reed hesitated.

Then she gave him a name.

"Daniel Cross.""

Marcus couldn't breathe.

"Daniel was supposed to be dead.""

"That's why I'm calling you.""

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Because I just received a photograph of him standing outside my house.""

The line went dead.

Marcus lowered the phone slowly.

Amara was watching him.

"What happened?""

He looked at her, unable to hide the terror in his eyes.

"Daniel may have been involved in Evelyn's treatment.""

Before she could respond, another message appeared on his screen.

It was from an unknown number.

Attached was a photograph of Leo sleeping in the guest bedroom.

The picture had been taken from inside the room.

Beneath it were seven words.

*YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO GIVE HIM BACK.*

Marcus stared at the image.

Then the phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name he hadn't seen in three years.

*DANIEL CROSS.*

He answered.

Daniel's voice came through clearly.

"No more tests, Marcus. No more lies.""

A pause.

May you like

Then the man who had once been his closest friend delivered the ultimatum that would change everything.

"Bring me Leo tonight, or I'll tell you what really happened in the delivery room.""
