Chapter 3: The Woman in the Photograph

Grace couldn't breathe.

“My mother?””

The man closed the ballroom doors behind him.

He was in his early sixties, wearing a charcoal suit and carrying a leather briefcase. His expression was professional, but his eyes were fixed on Evelyn.

Richard stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored him.

He looked at Grace.

“Are you Grace Miller?””

Grace nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

He opened his briefcase.

Evelyn’s voice suddenly cut through the room.

“Daniel, stop.””

The man looked at her.

“You should have stopped this years ago.””

A collective murmur moved through the guests.

Richard frowned.

“Evelyn, who is he?””

Evelyn said nothing.

Daniel placed a sealed envelope on the auction table.

Grace stared at it.

Her name was written across the front.

*GRACE MILLER.*

Her hands went cold.

“How did you get that?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Your mother gave it to me.””

Grace shook her head.

“My mother died three years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how—”

“She gave it to me before she died.””

Grace stared at the envelope.

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“You knew this was coming.””

Evelyn’s eyes remained on Daniel.

“No.””

Daniel gave a humorless smile.

“Yes, you did.””

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“You promised.””

“I promised your mother.””

That sentence changed the room.

Grace looked between them.

“My mother knew you?””

Daniel nodded.

“For twenty-four years.””

Grace stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

“Daniel Brooks. I handled your mother’s estate.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why are you here tonight?””

Daniel looked at the diamond necklace.

“Because that necklace was never supposed to be sold.””

Evelyn suddenly laughed.

“You're too late.””

Grace turned.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn stared at her.

“The necklace is already gone.””

Grace looked at the display.

The diamond necklace was still there.

“No, it isn't.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“That is not the original.””

Grace's stomach dropped.

Richard stepped toward the case.

“What?””

Evelyn pointed at the necklace.

“That is a replica.””

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Richard stared at the display.

“You told me this was the original.””

“I told you what I was told.””

“By whom?””

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel opened his briefcase again.

He removed a second photograph.

This one was newer.

Grace took it.

Her fingers trembled.

It showed her mother standing beside the necklace.

But there was something different.

A tiny inscription had been carved into the back of the center stone.

Grace turned toward Richard.

“Does the real necklace have this?””

Richard looked at the display.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“Because the real one hasn't been here tonight.””

Grace’s eyes lifted.

“Where is it?””

Daniel looked directly at Evelyn.

“That depends on what she did yesterday.””

Richard turned toward Evelyn.

“You transferred a necklace that wasn't yours.””

Evelyn's face had gone pale.

Daniel corrected him.

“She transferred the real necklace.””

Richard froze.

Grace whispered, “Where?””

Daniel reached into the envelope.

He pulled out a single sheet of paper.

“Your mother left instructions.””

Grace took it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

She recognized every curve of every letter.

Her mother had written:

*If they ever display the necklace publicly, tell Grace the truth.*

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

She read the next line.

*The necklace was never jewelry. It was evidence.*

She looked up.

“Evidence of what?””

Daniel closed his briefcase.

“That’s what your mother wanted you to discover.””

Evelyn suddenly moved toward the ballroom doors.

Two security guards blocked her.

“Move.””

One guard shook his head.

“Mr. Hart said nobody leaves.””

Evelyn turned toward Richard.

“You can't keep me here.””

Richard’s voice was ice-cold.

“Not until I understand why you forged a transfer.””

“I didn't forge anything.””

Grace held up the certificate.

“Your signature is right there.””

Evelyn stared at it.

Then something in her expression shifted.

She looked almost defeated.

Almost.

“Grace,” she whispered.

Grace stepped closer.

“What?””

Evelyn glanced at Daniel.

Then back at Grace.

“Your mother lied to you.””

Grace’s face tightened.

“About what?””

Evelyn opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the lights above the ballroom suddenly went dark.

A projector flickered to life.

The giant screen behind the auction table illuminated.

A photograph appeared.

It was Grace’s mother.

Standing beside a much younger Evelyn.

And between them was the diamond necklace.

The room gasped.

Grace stared at the screen.

Her mother was smiling.

Evelyn was not.

Then another image appeared.

A document.

A birth certificate.

Grace leaned forward.

Her own name appeared at the bottom.

And beneath it was a second name she had never seen before.

*Father: Richard Hart.*

Grace slowly turned toward Richard.

He had gone completely white.

“Richard…”

He couldn't look at her.

And then the projector displayed one final line:

*DNA TEST — 99.98% PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY.*

Grace’s mouth fell open.

May you like

Across the ballroom, Evelyn whispered the words Grace had never expected to hear.

“He was your father.””
