Chapter 8: The Voice Inside the Pendant

Marcus crossed the living room in seconds.

Lily stood halfway down the staircase, her small hands gripping the banister. Her braided hair was slightly messy, and the pale-pink dress she'd worn that afternoon was wrinkled from sitting on her bed.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “did someone hurt Mommy?””

Marcus knelt at the bottom of the stairs.

“Come here, baby.””

She hurried into his arms.

He held her tightly, feeling her heart beating against his chest.

“I don't know exactly what happened to Mommy,” he said carefully.

“But I'm going to find out.””

“Was Vanessa telling the truth?””

Marcus glanced over Lily's shoulder.

Vanessa stood beside the coffee table, looking devastated.

“Some things she said may be true,” Marcus answered.

“Some things we still need to check.””

Lily looked down at the necklace.

“Mommy gave this to me because she wanted me to be safe.””

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

“I believe that.””

“Then why does everybody want to take it?””

He kissed her forehead.

“Because someone thinks it contains something important. But that's not your fault, and you don't have to solve any of this.””

Lily nodded slowly.

Then she whispered, “I know how to open it.””

Marcus pulled back.

“What?””

“Mommy showed me.””

He stared at his daughter.

“When?””

Lily looked toward the living room windows, as if trying to picture the memory.

“Before she went to the hospital. She sat on my bed and told me the necklace had a secret door.””

Marcus's heart began pounding.

“What did she tell you to do?””

Lily held up the pendant.

“She said to press the little flower, then turn it twice.””

Vanessa moved toward them.

“Lily, don't—”

Marcus stood immediately.

“Stay where you are.””

Vanessa stopped.

Lily looked frightened again, so Marcus softened his voice.

“You don't have to open anything if you don't want to.””

“But Mommy said it was for you.””

Marcus crouched beside her.

“What else did she say?””

Lily swallowed.

“She said if Daddy ever looked sad for a long time, I should show him the secret.””

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

Danielle had known.

Whatever she'd discovered, whatever had frightened her, she'd prepared a way for her daughter to pass something important to him.

He looked at the pendant.

“Would you show me how?””

Lily nodded.

Marcus carried her to the sofa and sat beside her. He placed a clean cloth on the coffee table, then carefully positioned the necklace on it.

Lily touched the tiny engraved flower.

“Here.””

She pressed the center.

Nothing happened.

Then she turned the pendant once.

A soft click sounded.

She turned it again.

The gold casing opened along a seam so fine Marcus had never noticed it.

Inside was a tiny compartment containing a thin black memory chip.

Marcus stared at it.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Oh, God.””

He turned toward her.

“You knew this was here.””

“I knew there was a recording. I didn't know where Danielle had hidden it.””

Marcus carefully lifted the chip using the edge of the cloth.

“What's on it?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Danielle told me it contained proof that someone had changed her medical record.””

Marcus took out his phone, then stopped.

He wasn't going to insert an unknown device into his personal phone or risk damaging the evidence.

Instead, he placed the chip inside a small plastic sleeve from the desk drawer and set it beside the pendant.

“We're taking this to my attorney.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“No.””

Marcus stared at her.

“No?””

“If you give that to the police, they'll find out what happened at the hospital.””

“That's the point.””

“You don't understand. The recording doesn't just implicate the person who changed the report.””

“Who else does it implicate?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“Me.””

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

Then he picked up his phone and called his attorney again.

He explained that he had recovered a possible piece of digital evidence hidden inside a pendant and that his brother had just reported a threat against his daughter. His attorney instructed him to preserve the item, avoid playing or copying it himself, and bring it to a secure location where its contents could be examined properly.

Marcus agreed.

When he ended the call, Lily tugged at his sleeve.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Will the recording bring Mommy back?””

The question broke something inside him.

He pulled her into his arms.

“No, baby. It won't bring Mommy back.””

Lily's face crumpled.

“But it might help us understand what happened,” he continued.

“And whatever we find, I'm going to keep you safe.””

She buried her face against his chest.

For a few seconds, the room was quiet except for her breathing.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Marcus, you need to hear me before you take that chip anywhere.””

He looked at her.

“I'm listening.””

“The night Danielle died, I went into her hospital room after Andre left.””

Marcus's arms tightened around Lily.

“Why?””

“She asked me to.””

“What did she say?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“She told me she had been given the wrong medication.””

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.

“Did she tell you which medication?””

“No. She was weak, and she kept drifting in and out of sleep. She said the hospital had made a mistake, but when she asked for the original chart, someone refused to give it to her.””

“Who?””

“I never saw the person's face.””

Marcus stared at her.

“How did you get into her room?””

“I was listed as a visitor.””

“And what did you do?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I took a photograph of the chart.””

“Where is it?””

“I destroyed it.””

Marcus stood so abruptly that Lily clung to his shirt.

“You destroyed evidence?””

“I was afraid!””

“You keep saying that as if fear makes everything you've done disappear!””

Lily began crying again.

Marcus immediately lowered his voice and held her close.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

Marcus looked at her.

“Did Danielle die because of the wrong medication?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you see her after you took the photograph?””

Vanessa nodded.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“She asked me to promise that I'd protect you and Lily.””

Marcus's anger faltered for a moment.

“And did you?””

“I tried.””

“No. You protected yourself.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

He turned away, unable to bear looking at her.

His phone rang.

The caller ID showed Andre.

Marcus answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

His brother sounded breathless.

“I'm in my car. I'm okay.””

Marcus nearly collapsed with relief.

“Did someone come to your door?””

“Yes. I got out through the back before he reached the kitchen.””

“Where's Naomi?””

“With her mother. She's safe.””

“Good. Listen to me. We found the chip.””

Andre went silent.

“You opened the pendant?””

“Lily did.””

“Then you have to listen to the recording.””

“Not until my attorney can preserve it properly.””

“Marcus, there's something you need to know. The recording isn't just about Danielle's medical record.””

“What else is on it?””

Andre swallowed.

“Danielle recorded a conversation with the person who told the hospital to change her chart.””

“Who?””

“I never heard the whole conversation. But I recognized the voice.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Whose voice?””

Andre's answer came so quietly that Marcus almost missed it.

“Dad's.””

Marcus froze.

Their father had died five years before Danielle.

The room seemed to tilt around him.

“That's impossible,” Marcus whispered.

“I know what you're going to say. But I heard the recording before Danielle died. She played part of it for me.””

“How could our father have changed a medical record after he died?””

Andre's breathing quickened.

“He didn't. The recording was from before he died. Danielle believed he had discovered something years earlier, and someone had used his name to cover it up.””

Marcus looked at the memory chip on the table.

“What was our father involved in?””

Andre hesitated.

“Danielle said it had something to do with the family trust.””

Marcus stared at the family photographs.

The trust had been established by their grandfather decades earlier. Marcus and Andre had both received distributions after their father's death, but Marcus had never managed the paperwork himself.

“Who controls it now?”” he asked.

Andre answered immediately.

“Uncle Raymond.””

Marcus's uncle had handled the estate after their father died. He had helped Marcus pay Danielle's funeral expenses and had offered to cover Lily's school fees whenever money was tight.

Marcus had trusted him.

Until now.

Andre continued, “Marcus, don't confront him. If he's connected to what happened, he'll know we've found the chip.””

A notification appeared on Marcus's phone.

Unknown number.

A photograph.

It showed Lily sitting on the sofa beside him, taken through the front window just moments earlier.

Below it was a message.

*YOU HAVE THE RECORDING. NOW YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO HAND IT OVER.*

Marcus slowly raised his eyes toward the window.

The lawn was empty.

The driveway was empty.

But someone had been close enough to photograph his daughter inside her own home.

A second message arrived.

*ASK UNCLE RAYMOND WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FATHER.*

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She had stopped crying.

May you like

She was staring at the screen with an expression of absolute horror.

“Marcus,” she whispered, “your father didn't die the way your family was told.””
