Chapter 4: The Brother Who Stole His Life

Bear had spent eight years imagining the moment he would see Darius Cole again.

Sometimes, in his dreams, he punched him.

Sometimes, he screamed.

Sometimes, he asked the one question that had haunted him every night.

Why?

Why did you let me leave?

Why did you watch me destroy my own family?

Why didn’t you tell me the truth?

But now that Darius was standing only twenty feet away, separated by a wall of glass and the reflection of expensive restaurant lights, Bear felt none of those things.

He felt something worse.

He felt tired.

The kind of tired that comes when a person realizes they have been fighting the wrong enemy for years.

Maya held his hand tighter.

“Is that him?””

Bear looked down.

The little girl was staring through the window.

“Yes.””

Her voice became smaller.

“The man my mom was scared of?””

Bear’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

He hated that answer.

Because Maya was ten years old.

She should have been afraid of thunderstorms.

Or scary movies.

Or getting a bad grade.

Not a man from her mother’s past.

Not a man connected to her father’s disappearance.

Not a man who could make an entire restaurant fall silent just by walking through the door.

Marcus stepped between Bear and the window.

“You need to leave.””

Bear looked at him.

“No.””

“Bear.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“I ran once.””

The room became quiet.

“I ran because I thought it would protect them.””

He looked at Maya.

“I was wrong.””

Marcus studied him.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””

Bear looked back at Darius.

“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””

The old biker jacket suddenly felt heavier on his shoulders.

The years on the road.

The empty motel rooms.

The nights he sat alone wondering if Elena hated him.

All of it.

All because of one lie.

The office door opened.

Darius walked inside.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like he owned the building.

Like he owned the moment.

He was older now.

His hair had turned gray at the temples.

His suit probably cost more than Bear’s entire motorcycle.

But his eyes hadn’t changed.

Cold.

Calculating.

Patient.

The same eyes that had convinced Bear they were brothers.

Darius smiled.

“Bear Williams.””

Nobody spoke.

Darius looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on Maya.

His smile changed.

Not softer.

Not kinder.

Just more interested.

“So that’s her.””

Bear immediately moved in front of Maya.

Darius noticed.

And smiled wider.

“There he is.””

Bear’s expression hardened.

“What do you want?””

Darius tilted his head.

“After all these years, that’s your first question?””

“Yes.””

Darius laughed quietly.

“I expected something more emotional.””

“You’re not getting anything from me.””

Darius looked at Marcus.

“You told him.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Darius sighed.

“I was hoping we could avoid this.””

Bear stepped forward.

“Avoid what?””

Darius looked at Maya.

“Her finding out who her father really is.””

The words made Bear’s fists tighten.

“Don’t talk about me like you know me.””

Darius looked back at him.

“I know you better than anyone.””

“No.””

Bear’s voice was calm.

“You knew the man I was before I learned the truth.””

For the first time, Darius’s smile disappeared.

A tiny crack.

But Bear saw it.

“You always were stubborn,” Darius said.

“And you always were a liar.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked between them.

“Why did you make my dad leave?””

Darius looked at her.

A strange expression crossed his face.

Almost surprise.

Almost amusement.

“You think I made him leave?””

Bear felt his stomach turn.

Darius looked at Maya.

“Your father left because he wanted to.””

“No.””

The answer came from Bear immediately.

Everyone looked at him.

Bear stepped closer.

“I left because you told me Elena and Maya were in danger.””

Darius smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The memory you built your entire life around.””

Bear stared.

Darius walked toward the table.

“You were always looking for someone else to blame.””

Bear’s eyes narrowed.

“You threatened my family.””

“No.””

Darius shook his head.

“I warned you.””

“About what?””

Darius looked at Marcus.

Then back at Bear.

“About yourself.””

The words confused him.

“What?””

Darius leaned against the table.

“You really don’t remember everything, do you?””

Bear stayed silent.

Darius continued.

“That was always your problem. You remember the pain. You forget the details.””

A cold feeling moved through Bear.

Because somewhere deep inside, he knew.

There were gaps.

Pieces missing.

The night he left.

The days before it.

Things he buried because they hurt too much.

Darius saw the hesitation.

And smiled.

“Exactly.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

Darius looked at him.

“Still protecting him?””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“I’m protecting Elena’s daughter.””

Darius’s face hardened.

For a moment, the room saw the real man beneath the suit.

Anger.

“Don’t say her name.””

Bear noticed.

The reaction.

The anger wasn’t normal.

It was personal.

“What happened between you and Elena?””

Darius looked at him.

Nothing.

Then he laughed.

A quiet, bitter laugh.

“You never asked.””

Bear frowned.

“What?””

“You never asked why I cared.””

Nobody spoke.

Darius walked toward the window.

Outside, the city lights reflected against the glass.

“I was there before you.””

Bear felt a strange pain in his chest.

“What does that mean?””

Darius turned.

“I knew Elena before you ever met her.””

The sentence landed hard.

Maya looked confused.

Bear felt something break.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Darius nodded.

“She knew me first.””

The room became colder.

“She chose you.””

Bear stared.

Darius’s expression changed.

And suddenly Bear understood.

This wasn’t just about the club.

This wasn’t about money.

This wasn’t about power.

This was about Elena.

“You were jealous.””

Darius laughed.

“Jealous?””

He shook his head.

“You always make things simple.””

Bear stepped closer.

“You loved her.””

Darius didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

His silence confirmed everything.

Maya looked at Bear.

“My mom never told me about him.””

Bear looked at her.

Because he knew why.

Elena had protected her.

Protected her from the truth.

Protected her from a man who confused love with ownership.

Darius looked at the necklace around Maya’s neck.

“That pendant should have been mine.””

Bear immediately understood.

“You were after the necklace.””

Darius nodded.

“Not because of what’s on it.””

He stepped closer.

“Because of what it proves.””

Marcus moved quickly.

“That’s enough.””

Darius ignored him.

“Your wife hid something from you, Bear.””

Bear’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Darius smiled.

“The truth about why she really made you leave.””

The words echoed.

Marcus looked alarmed.

“Don’t.””

Darius continued.

“She didn’t send you away because of me.””

Bear froze.

Darius looked directly into his eyes.

“She sent you away because she found out what you did.””

Silence.

Maya looked confused.

Bear felt his heartbeat slow.

“What are you talking about?””

Darius reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a folded document.

And placed it on the table.

“I think it’s time you remembered.””

Bear didn’t move.

“What is that?””

Darius smiled.

“The reason Elena never wanted you to come home.””

Bear looked at the paper.

His hands felt cold.

Because somewhere inside him, a terrible thought appeared.

A thought he didn’t want to believe.

Maybe Darius wasn’t lying.

Maybe there was a piece of the story he had never known.

Darius pushed the document closer.

“Open it.””

Bear stared.

Maya whispered:

“Dad…”

The word almost made him forget everything.

Almost.

But then Darius spoke again.

“You want to know why your wife protected that necklace?””

Bear looked up.

Darius’s eyes were empty.

“Because it contains proof that the man you thought you were…”

He paused.

“…never existed.””

Bear slowly reached for the document.

His fingers touched the edge.

And when he opened it, the first line made his entire body freeze.

Because it wasn’t about Darius.

It wasn’t about the club.

It wasn’t even about Elena.

It was about him.

May you like

And beneath the title was a name he had never seen before.
