Chapter 8: The Man in the Coffin

Maya stared at the phone.

“The man who was buried wasn't Samuel Carter?””

Evelyn's answer came through in broken breaths.

“Richard swears he saw his father three days after the funeral. He was standing outside the house, watching the windows. When Richard ran toward him, the man disappeared.””

Patricia sank onto the sofa.

Maya looked at her.

“Did you know about this?””

Patricia shook her head.

“I knew Samuel had died. I attended the funeral.””

“Then who was in the coffin?””

“I don't know.””

Maya paced across the living room.

Thirty-one years of lies had become a maze, and every answer seemed to open another locked door.

“Evelyn, where is Richard now?””

“At home. He's searching through his father's papers.””

“Tell him not to touch anything.””

“Why?””

“Because someone is trying to control what I find. They know about my necklace, my mother, the photograph, and the hospital documents. I don't know who to trust anymore.””

Evelyn fell silent.

Then she said, “You can trust me.””

Maya closed her eyes.

“I want to believe that.””

“You don't have to believe me today. Just let me help you find out what happened.””

Maya looked at Patricia.

“I'm going to ask you one more time. Did you ever see Samuel Carter after his funeral?””

Patricia shook her head.

“No.””

“Did you see Lorraine?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two weeks after the funeral. She came to the hospital and asked me whether anyone had questioned the death certificate.””

Maya stopped pacing.

“What did you tell her?””

“I told her the police had closed the case.””

“Did she seem relieved?””

Patricia looked away.

“No. She seemed terrified.””

Maya's phone vibrated again.

A photograph had arrived from the unknown number.

It showed an old bank statement with a payment of $2 million made to Lorraine Carter. The transfer date was October 16, thirty-one years earlier.

Below it was a second image: a handwritten note bearing Samuel Carter's signature.

*The child must remain hidden until the estate is secured.*

Maya felt her stomach tighten.

“Someone paid Lorraine two million dollars to hide me.””

Patricia stared at the screen.

“That's what it looks like.””

“Who owned the account?””

Maya enlarged the statement.

The account belonged to Carter Medical Holdings, the company Richard had inherited after his father's death.

Maya immediately called Richard.

He answered on the first ring.

“Maya?””

“Did your company pay your mother two million dollars on October 16, thirty-one years ago?””

Silence.

Then Richard said, “Where did you get that information?””

“Answer me.””

“I need to see the document.””

“Richard!””

“Yes,” he finally admitted.

“There was a transfer. I found it in an old ledger years ago, but my mother told me it was payment for a property settlement.””

“Did you believe her?””

“I was twenty-seven. My father was dead, and my mother controlled the family accounts. I didn't have a reason to question her.””

“Your daughter disappeared, Richard. You had every reason to question everything.””

He said nothing.

Maya heard papers shuffling in the background.

“I'm looking at the original ledger now,” he said.

“There's something else here.””

“What?””

“The transfer was authorized by my father.””

Maya gripped the phone.

“Samuel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“But he was supposedly dead.””

“I know.””

Richard's breathing quickened.

“Maya, there's a signature here that matches his handwriting. If this is authentic, he was involved in the payment.””

“Or someone forged his signature.””

“That's possible.””

Maya stared at Patricia.

“Do you have anything that proves Samuel was alive after October 14?””

Patricia hesitated.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small folded letter.

“I kept this because I was afraid someone would come looking for it.””

Maya took the letter.

The paper was old, but the writing was clear.

Patricia,

The baby must remain with Angela. Lorraine has agreed to the arrangement. If Richard discovers what happened, he will lose everything.

Do not contact Evelyn.

Samuel.

Maya read it twice.

“Who gave you this?””

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

“Samuel himself.””

“When?””

“October 17.””

Maya's knees weakened.

Three days after the funeral.

Samuel had been alive.

Or someone had wanted Patricia to believe he was.

Maya turned the letter over.

A small embossed seal marked the bottom corner. She recognized the symbol from the hospital photograph: a crescent moon inside a circle.

“What's this seal?””

Patricia stared at it.

“Samuel used it on private correspondence.””

Richard was still on the phone.

“Maya, what did you find?””

She read the letter aloud.

Richard didn't speak until she finished.

Then he whispered, “My father was alive.””

Maya closed her eyes.

“Apparently.””

“No,” Richard said.

“I know that handwriting. I saw it on hundreds of letters when I was growing up. That's his signature.””

Evelyn's voice sounded faintly in the background.

“Richard? What is it?””

He ignored her.

“Maya, listen to me. There's something in my father's old study you need to see.””

“I'm not coming to your house.””

“I understand. But I'm going to tell you what I found.””

Richard took a breath.

“There's a safe behind the bookshelf. My mother told me it contained business documents. I opened it ten minutes ago.””

“And?””

“There's a second birth certificate inside.””

Maya's heart hammered.

“For whom?””

“For you.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Richard continued.

“The certificate lists Evelyn Carter as your mother. It lists Samuel Carter as your father. But the date of birth is October 14, and the name written on it isn't Grace.””

Maya tightened her grip on the phone.

“What name is written there?””

Richard's voice broke.

“Elizabeth Carter.””

Maya looked at the pendant around her neck.

“My middle name is Elizabeth.””

Evelyn gasped somewhere in the background.

Richard continued, “There's another document attached to the certificate. It's a signed agreement stating that the child would inherit the entire Carter family estate if both parents were deceased.””

Maya felt cold.

“Both parents?””

“Yes.””

“But Evelyn is alive.””

Richard went silent.

Then he said, “That's what the document says.””

Maya's mind raced.

If Samuel had been alive after his supposed funeral, and a payment had been made to hide the baby, then the inheritance might have been the motive.

But why would anyone want a newborn hidden to secure an estate?

And why had Evelyn been left to mourn a daughter who might still be alive?

Maya looked at Patricia.

“Did Samuel ever explain why he wanted me hidden?””

Patricia shook her head.

“He only told me that your life depended on it.””

Maya stared at the old letter.

“Then somebody knew I was supposed to inherit something.””

Richard's voice suddenly sharpened.

“Maya, there's one more thing.””

“What?””

“The agreement was signed by my father, my mother, and a third person.””

“Who?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he whispered the name.

“Evelyn Carter.””

Maya's heart stopped.

Across the room, Patricia covered her mouth.

Evelyn had been crying when she called.

She had insisted she wanted the truth.

But if she had signed an agreement to hide her own baby, then everything Maya thought she knew about the grieving woman in the restaurant had just changed.

Maya ended the call.

She looked at Patricia.

“Tell me the truth about Evelyn.””

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

“There's something you need to understand about the night you were born.””

“What?””

Patricia leaned forward.

“Evelyn didn't lose her baby in the hospital.””

Maya's breath caught.

May you like

Patricia continued.

“She lost her baby before she ever entered the maternity ward.””
