Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Name
When I confronted Rebecca, she didn’t deny it.
That surprised me.
I expected tears.
Anger.
A desperate explanation.
Anything.
Instead, she sat across from me in my living room, looked at the broken necklace on the table, and quietly said:
“My name is Rebecca.””
No excuses.
No pretending.
Just that.
I had imagined this moment a hundred different ways.
In every version, I was furious.
In every version, I screamed.
But when it actually happened, I felt something worse.
Disappointment.
Because anger means you still expect something from someone.
I didn’t expect anything from her anymore.
“Ava is upstairs,” I said.
Rebecca nodded.
“She shouldn’t hear this.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re worried about what she hears now?””
Her eyes dropped.
That small reaction told me something.
For the first time, I wondered if Rebecca had ever been completely heartless.
That didn’t excuse what she did.
But it reminded me that villains rarely walk into your life wearing a warning sign.
Sometimes they come carrying flowers.
Sometimes they memorize your daughter’s favorite food.
Sometimes they learn your dead wife’s story so they can use it against you.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
She looked at her hands.
“My mother’s name is Evelyn Carter.””
The name matched the photo.
“And?””
Rebecca took a breath.
“She sent me.””
The words landed like a punch.
“Why?””
“To get close to you.””
“Why?””
“Because of Bennett Holdings.””
I stared at her.
“My family’s company?””
“Yes.””
“And Ava?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
I saw them.
But I didn’t move.
“Especially Ava.””
My blood went cold.
“Explain.””
Rebecca swallowed.
“My mother believed Ava was the key.””
“The key to what?””
“The inheritance.””
I leaned back.
Ava’s inheritance.
The money Nia left.
The trust account I created for my daughter.
The property.
Everything meant to protect her future.
“They wanted my daughter’s money?””
Rebecca nodded.
“But that wasn’t the only reason.””
“What else?””
She looked toward the stairs.
“They wanted control.””
The room became silent.
“My mother knew if you lost custody of Ava, everything connected to Nia would become easier to access.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Why would I lose custody?””
Rebecca looked away.
“Because they planned to make you look unstable.””
The words cut deep.
“They wanted you to believe Ava wasn’t yours.””
I stared at her.
The DNA lies.
The hospital records.
Everything connected.
“They were going to say Nia cheated.””
Rebecca nodded.
“They had people ready to manipulate records.””
I stood.
“And you?””
Her face fell.
“I was supposed to make sure you trusted me.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
“You watched me mourn.””
“Yes.””
“You listened to me talk about Nia.””
“Yes.””
“You held my daughter’s hand.””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“And every day you knew you were lying.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Yes.””
That answer was worse than any excuse.
Because it was honest.
“Why stop?””
She looked at the necklace.
“Because Ava reminded me of myself.””
I said nothing.
“My mother used me too.””
The room went quiet.
“She didn’t love me. She loved what I could do for her.””
Rebecca wiped her face.
“When I met Ava, I realized I was becoming the same kind of person.””
I wanted to believe that mattered.
But my daughter’s fear mattered more.
“Nobody forced you to hurt her.””
“I know.””
“Nobody forced you to break that necklace.””
“I know.””
“You chose.””
Rebecca nodded.
“I did.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered.
“What?””
His voice was urgent.
“Malik, you need to come down here.””
“Why?””
“We found the vehicle records from the night Nia died.””
My heart stopped.
“What about them?””
A pause.
Then:
“The accident wasn’t an accident.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She heard him.
She knew.
“Who did it?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“We’re still confirming.””
I grabbed my jacket.
Then Rebecca spoke.
“Malik.””
I stopped.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“My mother wasn’t the only person involved.””
I turned.
“What are you saying?””
She looked toward the necklace.
“The person who wanted Nia gone was someone close to you.””
I felt a chill move through me.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone who knew our family.
Someone who had access.
My mind went back to my father.
The man who hid Elijah.
The man who knew Nia was investigating.
The man who looked terrified when he saw that letter.
I walked upstairs and found Ava sleeping.
I stood in the doorway for a long time.
Because six years ago, I lost my wife.
And yesterday, I almost lost my daughter.
But now I knew the truth.
May you like
The people closest to me had built a world of lies around my family.
And I was about to tear every single one of them down.
