Chapter 14: The Last Lie of the Bennett Family
I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.
"He's near Lily!""
Detective Harris grabbed his radio.
"Get units to the preschool immediately. We have a possible child-safety threat.""
Edward took my phone.
He examined the photograph.
"Look at the background.""
I leaned closer.
The image showed Lily holding her backpack near the preschool entrance.
Richard stood several feet behind her.
But there was something else.
A reflection in the glass door.
A woman holding a camera.
Patricia.
My mother had taken the photograph.
I felt sick.
"She knows where Lily is.""
Detective Harris made another call.
Then he turned toward me.
"We're sending officers to the school and arranging for Lily to be moved to a secure location.""
"I want to go.""
"We'll take you.""
Eleanor stood.
"I'm coming too.""
We left immediately.
Lily was safe.
Two officers had already arrived at the preschool, and her teacher had moved her into the administration office.
When I entered, Lily ran toward me.
"Mommy!""
I dropped to my knees and hugged her.
"Baby!""
She held my face between her tiny hands.
"Why are there police?""
I forced a smile.
"They're helping us.""
She looked past me.
Then she saw Eleanor.
"Who's that?""
I turned.
"This is Grandma Eleanor.""
Lily tilted her head.
"Another grandma?""
Eleanor knelt slowly.
"If you'd like me to be.""
Lily studied her face.
Then she offered her a small sticker from her pocket.
It was a pink butterfly.
Eleanor accepted it with trembling fingers.
"Thank you, sweetheart.""
Lily smiled.
"You're welcome.""
I watched them together.
Two generations of women who had been separated by lies.
For the first time, I imagined a future where Lily wouldn't have to grow up watching her mother being humiliated.
Then Detective Harris received a call.
He walked a few feet away.
When he returned, his expression was serious.
"Patricia has agreed to meet us.""
"Where?""
"At Arthur's former estate.""
Edward frowned.
"That's dangerous.""
"She says she has the original documents proving the identity of every child involved.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She nodded.
"We need to hear her.""
Detective Harris arranged for officers to accompany us.
Lily remained with a trusted officer and a family friend.
I kissed her forehead.
"I'll be back soon.""
"Promise?""
"Promise.""
The Bennett estate looked different in daylight.
The white columns were stained, the garden had grown wild, and several windows were boarded up.
Patricia stood on the front steps.
She wore a beige coat and held a leather folder.
When she saw Eleanor, she began crying.
"I never thought I'd see you again.""
Eleanor didn't move.
"You stole my children.""
Patricia looked down.
"I know.""
"Why?""
"Because Arthur made me.""
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
"You always say that.""
Patricia looked at me.
"Emily, please let me explain.""
I folded my arms.
"You have one chance.""
She opened the folder.
Inside were birth records, financial statements, and a series of handwritten letters.
"I gave birth to Richard in 2002," she began.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Daniel and I were together then. Arthur found out and took the baby. He told me Daniel had died and that I would never see my son again unless I cooperated.""
I stared.
"So you helped him steal me?""
Patricia nodded.
"I was terrified.""
"That doesn't excuse what you did.""
"I know.""
She opened another document.
"Arthur arranged for Richard to be raised as his own son. He wanted an heir he could control.""
Eleanor's face hardened.
"And Daniel?""
Patricia began crying.
"Daniel discovered the truth. He tried to get Richard back. Then he discovered the money transfers.""
"Did Arthur kill him?""
Patricia looked toward the officers.
"I didn't see the accident. But I heard Arthur tell Richard to make sure Daniel never reached the lawyer.""
I stepped closer.
"Did Richard tamper with my father's car?""
She nodded.
"Arthur ordered it. Richard did what he was told.""
I felt the ground shift beneath my feet.
"Why did Richard marry me?""
Patricia opened another letter.
"Because Arthur told him that if he married you, he could eventually control the trust. Richard knew you were his sister.""
My voice cracked.
"Did he ever love me?""
Patricia couldn't answer.
I laughed through my tears.
"Six years. Six years of my life.""
Then I noticed something in the folder.
A photograph.
A young woman stood beside Patricia.
She was holding a newborn baby.
The date was May 2008.
"Who's that?""
Patricia looked at it.
"Laura.""
"Sophie's mother?""
She nodded.
"Arthur arranged for her to give up the baby. But Laura refused. She tried to take Sophie and disappear.""
"Did Arthur hurt her?""
Patricia looked toward Eleanor.
"Richard did.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"He forced Laura into a car. She was taken to a private clinic. Arthur told everyone she had died.""
I remembered Laura's voice.
Your father didn't die in an accident.
I looked at Patricia.
"Where is Laura now?""
"Alive. She's been hiding for years.""
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
Patricia opened her mouth.
Then she suddenly looked toward the road.
A black car had stopped near the gate.
Richard stepped out.
He was holding a small envelope.
"Mother," he called.
Patricia froze.
Detective Harris moved toward him.
"Mr. Bennett, stop where you are.""
Richard ignored him.
He looked at me.
"Emily.""
I stared at him.
"Don't come near me.""
He gave a tired smile.
"You've heard her version.""
"I've heard the documents. I've heard the recordings. I've seen your signature.""
Richard's face hardened.
"Those documents are meaningless without context.""
"You knew I was your sister.""
He said nothing.
I stepped closer.
"Did you know before our wedding?""
Richard looked at Patricia.
Then he nodded.
"Yes.""
My knees almost gave way.
"Why?""
He shrugged.
"Because I needed the trust.""
Eleanor made a broken sound.
"You're sick.""
Richard looked at her.
"You were never supposed to come back.""
"And you were never supposed to marry your sister!""
He laughed.
"Arthur said it was the only way.""
I felt something cold settle inside me.
"You're blaming him?""
Richard looked directly at me.
"I'm telling you the truth. I did what I had to do.""
Detective Harris moved closer.
"Mr. Bennett, turn around and place your hands behind your back.""
Richard suddenly threw the envelope toward me.
It landed at my feet.
"Read it before they take me.""
The officers restrained him.
I picked up the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
A notarized declaration.
It stated that Arthur Bennett had transferred ownership of the entire Hayes estate to an unnamed beneficiary shortly before his disappearance.
The signature was dated six months earlier.
I looked at the beneficiary's name.
*Lily Bennett.*
My daughter.
Richard smiled despite the officers holding him.
"Arthur knew you'd eventually destroy everything. So he made sure Lily would inherit it.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
Richard leaned closer.
"Because Lily isn't Daniel's granddaughter.""
My heart stopped.
He continued.
"She's Arthur's.""
I stared at him.
Then Patricia suddenly screamed.
"THAT'S NOT TRUE!""
Richard smiled.
And in that moment, I understood.
May you like
The final secret wasn't about money.
It was about Lily.
