Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Buried

My father didn’t answer.

That was the worst part.

Not anger.

Not denial.

Not even a lie.

Silence.

The kind of silence that confirms the question you’re afraid to ask.

I stared at Daniel Carter, the man who taught me how to tie my shoes, how to shake someone’s hand, how to keep a promise.

The same man who had just stood there while a video of my dead mother questioned him.

“Dad.””

My voice cracked.

“Say something.””

His eyes moved from me to the phone in my hand.

Then to the floor.

Like the answer was written there.

“I made a mistake.””

The words barely left his mouth.

A mistake.

That was what he called it.

Years of secrets.

Years of lies.

A broken family.

A son who grew up believing he knew the people around him.

A mistake.

I laughed once.

It wasn’t a happy sound.

“You made a mistake?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was trying to fix something.””

“Fix what?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Elijah stepped forward.

“You always do this.””

My father looked at him.

Elijah’s face was filled with anger.

“You hide behind the idea that you were protecting people.””

“Careful.””

“No.””

Elijah shook his head.

“I spent my entire life wondering why my mother disappeared from your world.””

His voice became sharper.

“Why nobody talked about her.””

Why you let me believe she abandoned me.””

The room became heavy.

I looked at Elijah.

“You thought she left?””

He nodded.

“My whole life.””

Something in his expression broke.

“Then one day I found documents with Daniel’s name on them.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I was trying to help her.””

Elijah laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell him.””

Elijah pointed at me.

“Tell Marcus what you did.””

My father looked at me.

I wanted him to say it.

I wanted him to explain everything.

But another part of me was terrified of hearing it.

Because once the truth came out, there would be no going back.

Finally, Daniel walked into the room.

He sat on the edge of the bed.

The strongest man I had ever known suddenly looked exhausted.

“Your mother discovered something.””

I waited.

“She discovered money was being moved from the family trust.””

I remembered the video.

“By who?””

Daniel looked down.

“At first, I thought it was Vanessa.””

Her head snapped toward him.

“What?””

“You were the only person who knew about the accounts.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You accused me?””

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

The room went quiet.

Then Vanessa laughed.

A painful, empty laugh.

“That’s what this was?””

She shook her head.

“You thought I betrayed you?””

Daniel looked away.

“You weren’t innocent.””

“No.””

Her eyes became cold.

“But I wasn’t the one who did it.””

I looked between them.

“Then who was?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

Always the silence.

I stepped closer.

“I’m done with everyone protecting me from the truth.””

My voice shook.

“I’m twenty-two years old. I can handle it.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

He took a long breath.

“The night your mother found out, she confronted me.””

I froze.

“You?””

He nodded.

“She thought I was involved.””

My stomach tightened.

“Were you?””

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

But then he continued.

“I was hiding something else.””

“What?””

He rubbed his face.

“The reason your mother was investigating the trust wasn’t because of missing money.””

He paused.

“It was because she found out the house had been transferred.””

I looked around.

“This house?””

“Yes.””

“To who?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“To you.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It wasn’t supposed to happen until you turned twenty-five.””

My eyes widened.

“Then why?””

“Because someone tried to force the transfer early.””

Elijah looked at the documents.

“Vanessa.””

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew.””

“I knew someone wanted the property.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told us enough.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“You think I wanted this?””

Nobody responded.

Because we didn’t know anymore.

She looked at me.

“You think I married your father because of this house?””

I didn’t answer.

The truth was…

I didn’t know.

And I hated that.

She took a step forward.

“I came into this family after your mother died.””

Her voice softened.

“I was trying to build something.””

“Then why hide everything?””

Her expression changed.

Because that question hurt.

“I was scared.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Vanessa?

Scared?

“Of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then Elijah.

Then me.

“Of the person who was actually behind everything.””

The room went silent.

Elijah narrowed his eyes.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then name them.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I can’t.””

“Can’t or won’t?””

Her hands curled into fists.

“Both.””

I stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me.

“It means if I say the name, you won’t just lose your family.””

A pause.

“You could lose your life.””

The words hung there.

Nobody moved.

I wanted to call it dramatic.

I wanted to believe she was manipulating us.

But her face didn’t look like someone performing.

She looked terrified.

My father stood.

“Marcus.””

I turned toward him.

“There’s something else.””

Of course there was.

I almost smiled.

Of course there was.

“What now?””

He walked to the shelf and pulled out another box.

This one was smaller.

Older.

He placed it on the table.

“Your mother left this for you.””

I stared.

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because I was afraid of what was inside.””

That answer hurt.

My father had spent years hiding something my mother left specifically for me.

I opened the box.

Inside was a small envelope.

And a necklace.

My mother’s necklace.

I remembered it.

She wore it every day.

My fingers trembled as I picked it up.

There was a note attached.

*Marcus,*

*If you have this, then you are old enough to understand why I made the choices I made.*

I swallowed.

I continued reading.

*Your father will want to protect you. He always has. But sometimes love makes people do terrible things because they think the alternative is worse.*

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

The next line made my heart stop.

*The person who betrayed me is not the person you think.*

I frowned.

What?

I kept reading.

*I need you to find the second key.*

I looked down at the brass key in my hand.

Second key?

My heart started racing.

*The first key opens the truth.*

A pause.

*The second key opens the proof.*

I turned the page.

There was only one final sentence.

And it changed everything.

*Marcus, the person who knows where the second key is hidden is the person who has been standing beside your father for years.*

Slowly…

I looked up.

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

Then to Elijah.

Then back to my father.

“Who has the second key?””

Nobody answered.

Then the lights in the house went out.

Complete darkness.

A second later, something crashed downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Daniel whispered one word.

“No.””

I looked toward the doorway.

“What?””

My father’s voice was barely audible.

“He found us.””

And from the darkness below…

A man’s voice called out.

“Daniel.””

May you like

A pause.

“Bring me my key.””
