Chapter 4: The Name on the Secret Account

“Say it again, Daniel.””

I stood beside the tall windows overlooking Chicago, holding my phone so tightly that the edges pressed into my palm.

On the other side of the room, Richard was demanding answers from Martin Hale. Vanessa stood near the exit, her handbag clutched against her chest, while the guests whispered among themselves.

Daniel Brooks lowered his voice.

“The original incorporation documents for Northbridge Strategic Services list Vanessa Carter as the beneficial owner. Peter Lang was only the registered intermediary.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

There it was.

The answer I had been waiting for, and the one I had hoped would not exist.

“Are you certain?”” I asked.

“Our investigators verified the filing through the state registry. We also found payments from Northbridge to two accounts associated with companies Vanessa controls.””

“How much?””

“Approximately $1.8 million can be traced directly so far. The remaining transfers are still being examined.””

I looked across the room at my daughter-in-law.

She was watching me.

The moment our eyes met, she turned away.

“Daniel, freeze the acquisition review. Nobody signs anything until we know where every dollar went.””

“Understood. There's another complication.””

“Of course there is.””

“The $3 million transfer Martin mentioned was processed using Richard's credentials. But the authentication came from a device registered to the executive office.””

“Could Richard have authorized it without remembering?””

“Possibly. But the access records show that the transaction was initiated after he left the office for a medical appointment.””

My stomach tightened.

“Send me the records.””

“I will. Evelyn, if this turns into a criminal investigation, your relationship with Richard will make everything more complicated.””

I watched my son bend down to comfort Noah, who had pressed himself against his father's side.

“My relationship with Richard is already complicated.””

“I'm sorry.””

“So am I.””

I ended the call.

When I returned to the table, Richard was pacing beside his chair.

“Martin, I need to know whether someone has been impersonating me.””

Martin nodded.

“Our cybersecurity team is checking the login history. Until they finish, I can't give you a definitive answer.””

“And the three million dollars?””

“The transfer went to Northbridge's account.””

Richard ran both hands through his hair.

“Three million dollars. My name is on a transfer for three million dollars, and nobody thought I should know about it?””

Vanessa finally approached him.

“Richard, you're making this worse.””

He turned toward her.

“How?””

“By allowing your mother to turn an internal accounting question into a public spectacle.””

“My mother didn't transfer the money.””

“You don't know that.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“That's a serious accusation. Do you have evidence?””

She gave me a brittle smile.

“I have eyes. You arrive at a dinner, announce that you own the investment group buying Richard's company, and suddenly millions of dollars are missing. Forgive me if I find the timing suspicious.””

Martin stepped between us.

“Mrs. Carter, the acquisition investigation began before tonight. These concerns were already documented.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“You've wanted Richard to depend on you his entire life, Evelyn. You buy him things, pay for things, and then remind him what you did whenever he disagrees with you.””

Richard stared at her.

“Stop.””

She turned to him.

“I'm trying to protect you.””

“No. You're accusing my mother of financial misconduct because someone found a company you own receiving money from the people selling my employer.””

Her face hardened.

“You don't understand what you're talking about.””

“Then explain it to me.””

“I don't owe you an explanation in front of these people.””

Richard glanced around the room.

For the first time that evening, he seemed to notice the forty people listening to every word.

He lowered his voice.

“Then we'll discuss it privately. But you're going to explain it.””

Vanessa looked at Noah.

“Come with me, sweetheart.””

Noah tightened his grip on Richard's jacket.

"I want to stay with Dad.""

Her expression changed instantly.

"You're coming with your mother.""

"No.""

The little boy's voice trembled, but he didn't move.

Vanessa's hand rose, then stopped in midair when she realized everyone was watching.

She lowered it and smiled.

"Fine. Stay here and listen to your family destroy itself.""

She turned toward the door.

"Vanessa," I called.

She stopped.

"Before you leave, answer one question. Why did Northbridge receive money from the sellers before the acquisition was completed?""

She faced me slowly.

"Because I provided consulting services.""

"Which services?""

"Strategic transition planning.""

"Where are the reports?""

"In my office.""

"Who reviewed them?""

"The appropriate people.""

"Names, please.""

Her eyes flashed.

"You don't get to interrogate me.""

"Then stop asking everyone to trust you without evidence.""

She opened her mouth, but no answer came.

I had spent decades negotiating with executives who believed confidence could substitute for competence. Vanessa was making the same mistake.

She thought that if she looked offended enough, people would forget the question.

But Richard was no longer looking at her with admiration.

He was looking at her as if he were seeing a stranger wearing his wife's face.

"Go home," he said.

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

"Go home. I need to speak to Martin and my mother.""

"You cannot be serious.""

"I am.""

She stepped closer, lowering her voice.

"If you let her do this to us, Richard, don't expect me to forget it.""

He looked at her for a long moment.

"I won't forget tonight, Vanessa. I can promise you that.""

She turned and marched out.

The door slammed behind her.

Noah jumped.

Richard immediately knelt beside him.

"Hey, buddy. It's okay.""

"Is Mom in trouble?""

Richard's expression faltered.

"I don't know yet.""

"Did she take the money?""

Richard swallowed.

"I don't know that either.""

Noah looked toward me.

"Grandma, are you going to make Dad lose his job?""

I crouched beside them.

"Noah, I'm not trying to hurt your father. I'm trying to make sure the truth comes out.""

He considered that.

"Even if the truth makes people angry?""

"Especially then.""

He slipped his small hand into mine.

Richard watched us, his eyes shining.

"I'm sorry, Mom," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For the restroom. For letting her treat you that way. I knew it was wrong, and I still sat there.""

There were a hundred things I wanted to say.

That an apology did not erase what had happened. That I had spent years wondering when my son had become so frightened of disappointing his wife that he could no longer recognize cruelty.

Instead, I touched his cheek.

"Then don't make the same mistake tomorrow.""

He nodded.

Martin approached with a folder.

"Evelyn, there's one more document you need to see.""

I stood.

"What is it?""

He placed the folder on the table and opened it.

Inside was a copy of a payment authorization, followed by a printed email exchange.

The first page carried Richard's electronic signature.

The second contained a message sent from Vanessa's personal account to Peter Lang.

I read it once.

Then again.

*Once the acquisition closes, Richard will have enough money to stop asking questions. Keep the payment structure exactly as agreed.*

My fingers went cold.

Richard read over my shoulder.

"What does that mean?""

I turned to Martin.

"Do we know when this email was sent?""

He pointed to the timestamp.

"Eleven months ago.""

Richard stared at the date.

Then he looked at me.

"Mom, my promotion was announced six weeks ago.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

He looked back at the email.

"Then what exactly was Vanessa planning eleven months ago?""

Before I could answer, Martin's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds, his face growing increasingly grave.

Then he looked directly at Richard.

"The cybersecurity team has recovered the original authorization trail for the three-million-dollar transfer.""

Richard stepped forward.

"And?""

Martin lowered the phone.

"The transaction was approved from your office, but the signature was digitally copied from a document you signed more than a year ago.""

Richard went completely still.

Someone had forged his approval.

And whoever had done it had been planning this long before his promotion, long before tonight's humiliation, and long before I had considered purchasing his company.

May you like

Then Martin revealed the detail that made my blood run cold.

"The original authorization was created on a computer registered to Vanessa Carter.""
