Chapter 7: The Memory Behind the Locked Door

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

The silence felt heavier than the threat itself.

Sofia stared at the phone sitting on the desk, waiting for it to ring again.

Waiting for someone to explain.

Waiting for someone to tell her that the last few minutes had not happened.

But the phone stayed silent.

And the truth remained.

Adrian Vale knew her name.

He knew about her.

He knew exactly where she was.

Daniel slowly picked up the phone and placed it back on the receiver.

“He’s afraid.””

Sofia looked at him.

“That didn’t sound like fear.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“People who are truly powerful don’t make threats like that.””

“Then what was he doing?””

“Trying to make us believe he still has control.””

Sofia looked down at her bracelet.

“But he said something.””

Her voice lowered.

“He said the key was my memory.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had the same thought.

The missing years.

The night she disappeared.

The things she couldn’t remember.

Marcus leaned against the desk.

“I always wondered why Elena never tried to recover your memories.””

Sofia looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus sighed.

“She knew something happened that night.””

“What?””

“She knew you saw something.””

The room became colder.

Sofia shook her head.

“I was three.””

“Yes.””

“You’re saying a three-year-old child remembered something important?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your father believed children remember more than adults think.””

Daniel looked at the photograph on the desk.

“Thomas studied memory.””

Sofia turned.

“My father did?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew if Adrian found the evidence, he would destroy it.””

Sofia frowned.

“What does memory have to do with evidence?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Your father didn’t trust computers.””

“That’s strange.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He trusted people less.””

A bitter smile appeared on his face.

“Especially after he learned how easily records could disappear.””

Sofia looked at Marcus.

“Then what did he do?””

Marcus walked toward the old photograph.

“He created a backup.””

“Where?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Inside the only person Adrian would never think to search.””

Sofia’s heart dropped.

“Me.””

“Yes.””

She laughed quietly.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“It’s brilliant.””

“It’s cruel.””

Her voice cracked.

“You’re telling me my father hid something inside my memories and left me to spend my entire life not knowing?””

Marcus didn’t argue.

Because she was right.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Sofia, your father loved you.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he thought he would have time.””

The answer hurt more.

Because that was the tragedy of so many things.

People always thought they had more time.

Sofia sat down.

Her legs suddenly felt weak.

“I remember pieces.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What pieces?”” Daniel asked.

She closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

She took a breath.

“I remember a room.””

“What kind of room?””

“White.””

She frowned.

“Too white.””

Marcus exchanged a glance with Daniel.

Sofia continued.

“There was a loud sound.””

“A sound?””

“Yes.””

She pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“Like machines.””

Daniel became still.

“A hospital.””

“Maybe.””

“What else?””

Sofia closed her eyes tighter.

“A man’s voice.””

The room went silent.

“What did he say?”” Marcus asked.

“I don’t know.””

“Try.””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

Daniel crouched beside her.

“Don’t force it.””

But then something happened.

A flash.

A smell.

A memory.

The sharp scent of disinfectant.

A cold floor beneath her feet.

A man kneeling in front of her.

Not angry.

Not cruel.

Terrified.

“Daddy?””

The word escaped her mouth.

Everyone froze.

Sofia opened her eyes.

“I heard him.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You remember your father?””

“Not clearly.””

She looked confused.

“It’s like watching something through water.””

She touched her temple.

“He was holding me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What did he say?””

Sofia swallowed.

“He said…”

She stopped.

The memory faded.

“No.””

“What?””

“I lost it.””

Marcus moved closer.

“It will come back.””

“How do you know?””

“Because it happened before.””

Sofia looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

“When Elena brought you to me, you woke up from a nightmare.””

A cold feeling moved through her.

“What nightmare?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“You kept saying one sentence.””

Sofia waited.

“What sentence?””

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“You said, ‘Daddy hid the stars.’”

Sofia looked down at her bracelet.

The star charm.

Her breathing became uneven.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Because Elena begged me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because she said if you remembered too early, they would know.””

Sofia stared.

“They?””

Marcus nodded.

“Adrian wasn’t searching for a missing child.””

Daniel finished:

“He was searching for what your father left behind.””

The office suddenly felt too small.

Sofia stood.

“Then we find it.””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel blinked.

“What?””

“We find what my father hid.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You don’t even know what you’re looking for.””

“No.””

She looked at the bracelet.

“But I know who does.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

“Adrian.””

Sofia nodded.

“He’s afraid.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“He called because he wanted us scared.””

She picked up the old photograph.

“But if he was truly sure he had won, he wouldn’t need to call.””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Your father’s daughter.””

Sofia looked at him.

“I don’t know if that’s a compliment.””

“It is.””

For the first time all day, Sofia felt something other than fear.

Not confidence.

Not certainty.

Something smaller.

A reason to keep moving.

Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.

He checked it.

Immediately, his face changed.

“What?””

Sofia noticed.

“Who is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Show us.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he handed over the phone.

A news alert was open.

*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN ADRIAN VALE ANNOUNCES RETURN TO MIAMI AFTER TWO DECADES ABROAD.*

Below the headline was a photograph.

A wealthy older man in a dark suit.

Perfect hair.

Calm smile.

The kind of smile people trusted.

Sofia stared.

“That’s him?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at the photograph.

“He looks normal.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Most dangerous people do.””

Marcus scrolled down.

Then stopped.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

He turned the phone around.

A second article.

This one was newer.

*SECURITY INCIDENT AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT UNDER INVESTIGATION.*

Sofia read the first sentence.

Her blood went cold.

“Airport employee Sofia Ramirez…”

She looked up.

“They already made it public?””

Marcus nodded.

“They’re controlling the story.””

Daniel took the phone.

“They want people to believe you’re the problem.””

Sofia looked at the article.

A stranger’s name.

A stranger’s accusations.

Her own life being rewritten again.

“No.””

She stood.

“They don’t get to do that.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“What are you going to do?””

Sofia folded the letter from her mother.

She placed it carefully inside her bag.

“Find the truth.””

Daniel nodded.

But before anyone could move, the office lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

The room fell into darkness.

Someone outside screamed.

An alarm started blaring.

Marcus immediately moved toward the door.

“Stay back.””

Sofia heard footsteps in the hallway.

Not running.

Walking.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone who wasn’t trying to hide.

Marcus looked through the small window in the door.

His face went pale.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped beside him.

Then froze.

Sofia saw it.

The fear.

The recognition.

“Who is it?””

Marcus whispered:

“It’s not Adrian.””

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

A shadow appeared beneath the gap.

Then a man’s voice spoke calmly from the other side.

“Sofia Ramirez.””

She froze.

The voice continued.

“I know you’re in there.””

Daniel moved in front of her.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then the stranger answered:

“The person who kept you alive.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Because he knew exactly who it was.

Sofia looked at him.

“Marcus?””

The man outside spoke again.

“Open the door, Marcus.””

A long silence.

Then:

“I think it’s time she learned what Elena did the night she disappeared.””

Sofia’s heart stopped.

Because Marcus whispered the words she never expected.

“Her mother wasn’t the only one who saved her.””

May you like

He looked at Sofia.

“She was the one who betrayed her first.””
