Chapter 11: The Lie That Protected Him

The room went silent.

Cole stared at Darius.

Not because he believed him.

Because for one terrifying second…

He wondered if he should.

Darius watched the doubt appear.

That was what scared Bear most.

Not the accusation.

The fact that Cole was listening.

“Get out,” Bear said.

Darius looked at him.

“You still protect him.””

Bear stepped forward.

“I said get out.””

Darius smiled slightly.

“Exactly why Nia trusted you.””

Cole looked between them.

“What is he talking about?””

Nobody answered.

That made him angry.

“Enough.””

His voice shook the room.

“No more secrets.””

Darius nodded.

“Good.””

He reached into his jacket.

Cole immediately tensed.

But Darius pulled out a small recorder.

He placed it on the table.

“This is what Nia left behind.””

Bear looked at it.

“You already had a recording.””

“This one is different.””

Cole stared.

“Play it.””

Darius pressed the button.

Static.

Then Nia’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“Dad…”

Cole closed his eyes.

The sound alone hurt.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to explain this to you.””

A pause.

“But I need you to understand something.””

The recording continued.

“I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.””

Cole opened his eyes.

His face tightened.

“I left because I found out someone was using our family.””

Everyone listened.

Nia’s voice became quieter.

“And the person I trusted most was protecting a secret.””

Cole looked at Darius.

Darius looked back.

The recording continued.

“I wanted to tell Dad.””

A pause.

“But I couldn’t.””

Cole’s heart sank.

“Why?”” Nia’s recorded voice continued.

“Because if I was wrong, I would destroy the only family I had left.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Cole looked at Darius.

“What secret?””

Darius didn’t answer.

Bear grabbed the recorder.

“You brought us here to hear half a story?””

Darius looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“To understand the other half.””

He pointed at Eli.

“The boy knows.””

Everyone looked at Eli.

The boy shook his head.

“I don’t.””

Darius stepped closer.

Cole blocked him.

“Don’t.””

Darius stopped.

“Ask him about the necklace.””

Eli froze.

Cole noticed.

“What necklace?””

The boy looked down.

Slowly, his hand moved beneath his hoodie.

He pulled out a thin chain.

A small metal pendant hung from it.

Cole stared.

Because he knew it.

Nia wore the same symbol.

Every day.

A small circle with a line through the center.

Something she said represented finding your way home.

Cole stepped closer.

“Where did you get that?””

Eli held it tightly.

“Nia gave it to me.””

“When?””

Eli looked afraid.

“Before she left.””

Cole’s voice became quiet.

“Where did she leave from?””

The boy looked at the floor.

“The house.””

Nobody spoke.

Cole felt cold.

“What house?””

Eli’s eyes filled with tears.

“The house where she was hiding me.””

Bear looked at Cole.

Darius looked away.

And Cole realized something.

This wasn’t just about a missing woman.

This was about a hidden life.

A life Nia had built without him knowing.

Cole looked at Darius.

“You knew.””

Darius nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

The answer broke something inside Cole.

“You let me believe she was gone.””

Darius didn’t defend himself.

“I did.””

Cole stepped forward.

“Why?””

Darius looked at him.

“Because she asked me to.””

The room went silent.

Cole stopped.

“What?””

Darius reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old phone.

The screen was cracked.

But still working.

“She called me the night she disappeared.””

Cole stared.

“She said if anything happened, I had to keep you away.””

Cole’s face changed.

“From what?””

Darius looked at him.

“From the truth about what happened to Eli’s father.””

Eli looked up.

“My dad?””

Darius nodded.

And then he said the name.

A name nobody expected.

May you like

A name that made Bear turn pale.

“Your father was the reason Nia disappeared.””
