Chapter 13: The Heir to the Lies

Marcus stared at his name on the terminal.

*PROJECT LANTERN — NEXT DIRECTOR IDENTIFIED: MARCUS REED.*

*SUCCESSOR ACCEPTANCE REQUIRED TO RELEASE WITNESS 001.*

The countdown remained frozen at eight minutes and forty-two seconds. Beyond the locked doors, alarms began to sound throughout the building.

General Adrian Vale's face appeared on the overhead screen.

“Your grandfather believed every system needed a successor. Your mother believed she could control what she created. Your father believed silence could protect his children. And you, Marcus, have spent your entire life believing that doing the right thing was enough.””

Marcus stepped toward the screen.

“What do you want from me?””

“Your acceptance.””

“Of what?””

“Authority over Project Lantern.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You've spent years using this program to erase people. Why would I accept control of it?””

“Because your father is about to die.””

The screen changed.

Thomas sat in the interrogation room, his hands cuffed to a metal table. A guard stood behind him, pistol pressed against his neck.

Marcus's breath caught.

Vale continued.

“Accept the succession, and your father walks out of this building. Refuse, and he becomes another tragic casualty in a long history of bureaucratic misunderstandings.””

Eleanor moved toward the terminal.

“Adrian, leave him out of this.””

“You should have thought of that before you brought your family back into the program.””

Catherine seized Eleanor's arm.

“Don't negotiate with him. That's how he got control in the first place.””

Marcus turned toward his aunt.

“Why does the system identify me as the successor?””

Catherine looked at Eleanor, then at the screen.

“Because the original program was designed to transfer authority through a biological verification process. Your grandfather believed that a director's family could be threatened, so he created a succession protocol that would prevent hostile outsiders from taking control.””

“Then why wasn't David selected?””

“David was officially declared dead before the protocol was updated. You were the only living son listed in the system when the succession rules were revised.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

“You knew about this?””

“I knew there was a succession protocol. I never knew your name had been entered.””

Catherine shook her head.

“Someone didn't merely enter his name. They prepared the system to recognize him.””

Rachel examined the terminal.

“The successor identification was created six months ago. It required access to the central archive and a valid director's authorization.””

“Whose authorization?”” David asked.

Rachel brought up the record.

*AUTHORIZING DIRECTOR: ELEANOR REED.*

Eleanor stepped back.

“I didn't authorize it.””

“Then someone used your credentials again,” Marcus said.

Catherine stared at the entry.

“No. This is different.””

She leaned closer to the screen.

“Look at the timestamp. This wasn't entered through the normal authentication process. It was created using the original administrator account.””

Thomas's voice suddenly came through a small speaker beside the terminal.

“Marcus, can you hear me?””

Marcus rushed toward it.

“Dad?””

“I can hear you. Listen carefully. Don't accept anything.””

Vale's voice cut in.

“Mr. Reed, your continued cooperation would be appreciated.””

Thomas ignored him.

“Marcus, your grandfather built a second layer into the system. The succession protocol has a manual override.””

Catherine's eyes widened.

“You remember the override?””

“I helped test it before the program went operational.””

“Where is it?”” Marcus asked.

Thomas looked directly at the camera.

“It's tied to the original director's testimony. The person who created the system can revoke the successor's authority, but only by admitting the program was used unlawfully.””

Eleanor stared at the screen.

“I never knew that was possible.””

“You weren't supposed to,” Thomas replied.

“Your father wanted to make sure no director could pass the program to someone else without taking responsibility for what it had become.””

Vale's expression hardened.

“Enough.””

The screen showing Thomas went dark.

A moment later, a new prompt appeared.

*SUCCESSOR ACCEPTANCE: PENDING.*

*TIME REMAINING TO RELEASE WITNESS 001: 08:31.*

Marcus looked at Catherine.

“If I accept, can I release my father and the other witnesses?””

“You would gain administrative control over the program,” she said.

“But Vale still controls the physical security systems. He could use the authority you give him to claim the transfer was legitimate.””

“And if I refuse?””

“He'll keep your father hostage until he finds another way to force you.””

David stepped between Marcus and the terminal.

“Then we don't give him anything.””

Marcus looked at his brother.

“You heard Dad. There's an override.””

“An override that requires Mom to confess. Vale won't let her finish.””

Rachel pointed toward the server cabinet.

“Actually, the authentication process is already running. If we can isolate the terminal from the building's control network, Vale may lose the ability to interrupt the transmission.””

Catherine shook her head.

“The server has an independent power supply. Cutting the network won't stop the countdown.””

“Can we complete the audit without accepting the succession?””

“Yes,” Catherine said.

“But the system will require the original director to revoke the transfer. That's the only way to release the witnesses without granting Marcus authority.””

Eleanor took a slow breath.

“Then I'll do it.””

Marcus turned to her.

“Mom, you understand what that means?””

“I'll have to testify publicly about everything I did. The false identities. The unauthorized relocations.

The orders I signed. The people I failed to protect.””

“And you could go to prison.””

“I should have gone to prison years ago.””

Catherine squeezed her sister's hand.

“Then do it now.””

Eleanor approached the terminal.

A new prompt appeared.

*DIRECTOR REVOCATION REQUIRES THREE CONDITIONS:*

*1. ORIGINAL DIRECTOR IDENTIFICATION.*

*2. ADMISSION OF UNLAWFUL PROGRAM USE.*

*3. SUCCESSOR REJECTION.*

Marcus read the final condition twice.

“Successor rejection. That means I have to reject it.””

“Yes,” Catherine said.

“And if I do?””

“The succession will be permanently disabled. No one will inherit control through the family protocol.””

Vale's voice returned through the speakers.

“Marcus, think carefully. This is your last opportunity to save your father.””

Marcus stared at the dark screen.

“You're afraid of losing the program.””

“I am trying to preserve national security.””

“You're trying to preserve your power.””

“Power is merely responsibility with fewer illusions.””

David raised his weapon toward the ceiling speaker, though he didn't fire.

“Stop talking.””

Marcus moved to the terminal.

A prompt appeared.

*DO YOU ACCEPT SUCCESSOR AUTHORITY?*

Two options glowed beneath it.

*ACCEPT.*

*REJECT.*

He looked at his mother's face, then at David.

“If I reject it, Vale may kill Dad.””

David's jaw tightened.

“If you accept, Vale gets exactly what he wants.””

Marcus turned back to the screen.

“I spent my whole life thinking my family was ordinary. Then I found out my brother had been declared dead, my father had helped falsify records, and my mother had built the system used to disappear people.””

He placed his finger over the rejection option.

“I'm done inheriting other people's decisions.””

He pressed *REJECT*.

The terminal flashed.

*SUCCESSOR AUTHORITY DECLINED.*

*DIRECTOR REVOCATION ENABLED.*

Eleanor stepped forward and entered her credentials.

A recording prompt appeared.

She looked into the camera mounted above the terminal.

“My name is Eleanor Reed. I was the original director of Project Lantern. I authorized a program intended to protect witnesses from retaliation.

I failed to maintain the safeguards that were supposed to prevent abuse. I allowed General Adrian Vale to exploit my authority, and I failed to act when I learned that protected people were being tracked and unlawfully detained.””

Her voice trembled, but she continued.

“I accept responsibility for the harm caused by my decisions. I hereby revoke all director and successor authority associated with Project Lantern. I request independent investigation and prosecution of every person who used this program to commit crimes.””

The terminal processed her statement.

*DIRECTOR REVOCATION ACCEPTED.*

A loud mechanical click echoed through the room.

The locks released.

The countdown resumed.

*08:14.*

Rachel stared at the screen.

“It's working.””

A second message appeared.

*AUDIT TRANSMISSION INITIATED.*

Vale's voice exploded through the speakers.

“Stop the transmission!””

Catherine moved to the keyboard and entered her own credentials.

The system requested a final confirmation.

*WITNESS 001: VERIFY IDENTITY.*

Catherine placed her hand against the biometric scanner.

“Catherine Reed,” she said.

“Original systems analyst. Witness 001. I verify the authenticity of the audit record.””

The terminal flashed green.

*IDENTITY VERIFIED.*

The screen filled with lines of data.

Then the building's lights flickered.

A violent crash sounded beyond the archive door.

Daniel shouted from the corridor, “We have company!””

David moved toward the entrance.

Rachel grabbed the flash drive and began copying the transmission receipt.

Marcus watched the final status change.

*AUDIT TRAIL DELIVERED TO INDEPENDENT OVERSIGHT AUTHORITY.*

For the first time since the airport, he felt something like hope.

Then the terminal displayed one final alert.

*REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.*

*SOURCE: GENERAL ADRIAN VALE.*

Catherine's face went white.

“He still has access.””

Marcus stared at the screen.

“How?””

She looked at the original administrator log.

“Because the director's revocation shuts down the succession protocol. It doesn't revoke the emergency authority embedded in the system.””

Vale's voice returned, colder than before.

“You've done well, Marcus. You have no idea how much you've accomplished.””

A new image appeared.

Thomas was still in the interrogation room, but the guard behind him had vanished.

In his place stood Victor Shaw.

Shaw held a document in one hand and a pistol in the other.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Thank you for opening the door,” he said.

“Now I'm going to finish what we started eleven years ago.””

The screen went black.

Then the archive door opened from the outside.

May you like

Victor Shaw stepped into the room.

And behind him, bound and bleeding, was General Adrian Vale.
