Chapter 4: The Signature of a Dead Man

The words blurred before my eyes.

*The baby was never supposed to survive.*

I read them again, hoping the letters would rearrange themselves into something less monstrous.

They didn't.

“Evelyn,” I whispered, “what does that mean?””

She took the phone from my trembling hands and enlarged the photograph.

“It means someone wanted you dead.””

Behind us, Diane made a strangled sound.

“That isn't what it means.””

Every head turned toward her.

For once, she didn't look angry. She looked cornered.

Daniel rose from his chair so quickly it scraped across the stone.

“Mom, what does that mean?””

Diane pressed her lips together.

“I don't know. Someone could have added that note years later.””

Evelyn studied the photograph.

“Possibly. That's why we need the original document examined. But the signature appears consistent with Richard's known handwriting.””

“My father is dead,” Daniel said.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Then explain why he signed a document three days after his recorded death.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I can't.””

“Neither can I. That's why we're going to find out.””

The first police cruiser pulled through the gates, its blue lights washing over the mansion's white columns. Another vehicle followed.

Two officers approached the patio while a third spoke to the security guards.

Diane immediately straightened her dress.

“Officer, thank goodness. These people have invaded my home and are making outrageous accusations.””

The older officer looked at the broken glass table.

“Ma'am, were you holding that baseball bat?””

“It was a misunderstanding.””

“Did you strike the table with it?””

Diane's jaw tightened.

“I was trying to frighten my daughter-in-law into leaving.””

The officer glanced at me.

“Were you afraid she'd hurt you?””

I stared at Diane.

My hand rested protectively over my stomach.

“Yes.””

“Did she threaten you?””

“She told me to leave with my unborn child. Then she raised the bat again.””

Diane threw up her hands.

“I never intended to hit her!””

The officer remained expressionless.

“Intent is something we'll investigate.””

He asked me to describe what had happened, and I did. I told him about the shattered glass, the bat, and the threats. I gave him the names of the security guards who had witnessed the confrontation.

When he finished taking my statement, he turned to Diane.

“Ma'am, I'd like you to accompany us to the station for further questioning.””

Diane stared at him as though he'd suggested arresting the queen.

“Do you have any idea who I am?””

“Yes, ma'am. That's why I'm asking you to cooperate.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Tell them this is a family disagreement.””

Daniel's face was pale.

“You attacked my pregnant wife.””

“I lost my temper!””

“You could have killed her.””

Diane's mouth trembled.

For one second, she seemed to search his face for the little boy who had always run to her whenever she was upset.

That boy wasn't there anymore.

The officer escorted her toward the driveway.

Before she reached the SUV, Diane turned back to me.

“You think you've won something, don't you?””

I didn't answer.

She pointed at my stomach.

“You have no idea what you've brought into this family.””

The officer guided her into the vehicle.

The door shut.

And Diane Whitmore, who had spent years making every room bend to her will, disappeared behind tinted glass.

I should have felt relieved.

Instead, I felt as if the ground beneath my feet had opened.

Daniel approached me cautiously.

“Nia, please. We need to talk.””

“About what?””

“About us.””

I looked at him for a long moment.

“What is there to say?””

“I didn't know.””

“You knew about the investigation. You knew your mother had interfered with my records. You knew there were secrets surrounding my birth.””

“I thought it was about an inheritance dispute.””

“And you decided I didn't deserve to know?””

His shoulders sagged.

“I was afraid of what I'd discover.””

“So you let me live in the dark.””

He reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

His expression crumpled.

“Nia, I love you.””

I wanted those words to mean what they had meant yesterday.

But yesterday, I hadn't known that his mother might have stolen me from my biological family. I hadn't known that his dead father had apparently signed a document concerning my survival.

And I hadn't known my husband could keep such a devastating secret while kissing me goodnight.

“I need a doctor,” I said.

“And I need space.””

Evelyn immediately called her driver.

Daniel tried to protest.

“I should come with you.””

“You should have stood beside me when it mattered.””

He looked as though I'd slapped him.

I left him standing beside the broken table.

At the hospital, a nurse checked my blood pressure and listened to the baby's heartbeat. The steady, rapid rhythm filled the examination room.

I gripped the edge of the bed and cried.

Not because I was hurt.

Because she was alive.

Because I was alive.

Because somewhere in the world, a woman named Margaret had died without knowing whether her daughter had survived.

The doctor assured me there were no immediate signs of complications and recommended monitoring because of the stress and the minor injury to my hand.

Evelyn waited outside until the examination was finished.

When I emerged, she was holding a paper cup of coffee she hadn't touched.

“Can we talk?”” she asked.

I nodded.

We sat in a quiet corner near the hospital chapel.

“I need to tell you something about Richard,” Evelyn began.

“Something else?””

She accepted the bitterness in my voice without flinching.

“Margaret kept a journal. In the final entry she wrote before her diagnosis, she said Richard had contacted her after years of silence. He told her he had evidence that Diane had arranged your disappearance.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn't he come forward?””

“He claimed he was afraid someone would kill you.””

“That doesn't make sense. If he was my father, why wouldn't he protect me?””

“He may have been protecting himself. I don't know.””

She took out her phone and showed me a photograph of a handwritten letter.

“Margaret wrote this after receiving his message.””

I read the words slowly.

Richard says the truth is worse than I imagined. He says Diane was not acting alone. He says the person who helped her has been watching Nia for years.

My skin prickled.

“Who was watching me?””

“I don't know.””

“Did Margaret name anyone else?””

“No. But she left one more instruction. If you were ever found, I was to take you to a storage facility in Connecticut and retrieve a box marked with your birth date.””

“What's inside?””

“Margaret never told me.””

I looked at the photograph again.

For the first time, I understood that finding the truth would not be as simple as exposing Diane.

The woman who had raised me, the woman who had stolen my identity, and the woman who had tried to hurt my unborn child might have been only one part of a much larger secret.

Evelyn checked the time.

“We can go tomorrow morning. Tonight, you need rest.””

I nodded, but my eyes returned to the photograph of Richard's signature.

There was something familiar about the way he crossed the final letter of his surname.

I'd seen that distinctive stroke before.

Not in an old photograph.

Not in a family document.

In the handwritten notes Daniel kept locked in his study.

I remembered a page I'd glimpsed six months ago, when Daniel had been searching for something in a drawer.

At the bottom had been the same signature.

Richard Whitmore's.

But the note hadn't been dated decades ago.

It had been dated three months earlier.

I took Evelyn's hand.

“There's something I haven't told you.””

“What is it?””

“My husband may have received a letter from his father.””

Evelyn went very still.

“When?””

“Six months ago, around the time he hired the investigator.””

Her face lost its color.

“Nia, are you certain?””

I remembered the handwriting.

The date.

The way Daniel had snatched the page from my hand and insisted it was an old business document.

I nodded.

May you like

And Evelyn whispered the words I had been dreading.

“If Richard is alive, then he knows exactly where you are.””
