Chapter 4: The Brother Who Buried the Truth
For ten seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Marcus.
Not even Ray.
The only sound inside the old shed was Lily crying quietly in the corner.
A child’s fear.
A child’s confusion.
A child who had been dragged into a war she never asked to join.
I looked at Marcus.
My best friend.
My brother.
The man who had stood beside me when I lost my father.
The man who held me back when I almost destroyed myself after Danielle disappeared.
The man who told me every year, “Some people leave because they were never meant to stay.””
And now he was standing in front of me admitting he knew something.
Something about her.
Something about the woman I spent ten years trying to forget.
“What did you do?”” I asked.
My voice sounded different.
Colder.
Marcus looked down.
“I saved her.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“You saved her?””
I pointed toward Lily.
“You let me spend ten years believing Danielle abandoned me.””
Marcus swallowed.
“I know.””
“You watched me hate her.””
“I know.””
“You watched me break.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
I stepped closer.
“Then explain to me how you call that saving her.””
Marcus looked at Lily.
Then at Ray.
Then back at me.
“Because if Danielle stayed, she would have died.””
The words stopped me.
Even Ray’s expression changed slightly.
I lowered my hand.
“Why?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation made my stomach twist.
“Because she found out what was happening inside the club.””
The old anger returned.
“The club?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Ten years ago, we weren’t just dealing with rival crews.””
“What were we dealing with?””
He looked at the floor.
“Corruption.””
The word sounded too small.
Too simple.
For the destruction it caused.
Ray leaned against the wall, watching us.
“You see, Cole? He’s finally telling the truth.””
I turned toward him.
“Shut up.””
Ray smiled.
“You still don’t understand who the villain is.””
“You kidnapped a child.””
“And you built a kingdom on lies.””
I stepped toward him.
Marcus grabbed my arm.
“Cole.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Not here.””
“Why not?””
“Because Lily is here.””
That stopped me.
He was right.
I looked at her.
She was holding the Rottweiler’s collar with both hands, trying to be brave.
Just like Danielle.
That thought hurt.
I lowered myself beside her.
“Lily.””
She looked at me.
“I’m going to get you out of here.””
She nodded.
“Are you mad at Marcus?””
The question caught me off guard.
Children always noticed things adults tried to hide.
I looked at Marcus.
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“But he helped my mama.””
Silence.
I turned back.
“What did you say?””
Lily rubbed her eyes.
“Mama told me Marcus was the only person she trusted.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Pain crossed his face.
“She knew.””
I stood.
“She knew you helped her disappear?””
He nodded.
“She asked me.””
“When?””
“The night she left.””
My heart tightened.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“Tell me everything.””
Marcus looked at Ray.
Ray’s smile faded.
“Careful.””
Marcus ignored him.
“Ten years ago, Danielle came to me.””
“Why you?””
“Because she knew you wouldn’t listen.””
That hurt because it was true.
Back then, I was angry.
Proud.
I thought Danielle was looking for a reason to leave.
I thought every warning was an accusation.
Marcus continued.
“She found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Financial records.””
“From the club?””
He nodded.
“But not from the club itself.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Ray.
“Someone was using the club name.””
Ray laughed.
“Still blaming me?””
Marcus stared at him.
“You were involved.””
The smile disappeared.
“Careful.””
“You threatened Danielle.””
Ray’s jaw tightened.
“I warned her.””
“You threatened her.””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“How long?””
Marcus looked confused.
“How long what?””
“How long did you both know?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
“You knew.””
“Cole—”
“You knew something was wrong and you let me walk around blind.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed toward Lily.
“But nobody protected her.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Suddenly, the Rottweiler moved.
Its ears lifted.
A low growl escaped.
Everyone turned.
Outside the shed, something moved.
Ray’s face changed.
For the first time, he looked worried.
“That’s not good.””
I stared at him.
“You expecting someone?””
He didn’t answer.
Then headlights appeared through the trees.
Multiple vehicles.
Coming fast.
Marcus looked toward the door.
“We need to leave.””
Ray grabbed Lily’s arm.
I moved instantly.
“Don’t touch her.””
Something in my voice made him stop.
For a moment, I saw the old Ray.
The man who used to laugh beside me.
The man who used to call me brother.
Then it disappeared.
“You think you know everything because Danielle left you a few notes?””
He shook his head.
“You have no idea what she found.””
“Then tell me.””
Ray smiled.
“She found out Lily wasn’t the only secret.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Before he answered, the windows shattered.
Glass exploded across the room.
Everyone dropped.
The Rottweiler lunged toward Lily.
I grabbed her and pulled her down.
Another sound followed.
Gunshots.
Not aimed at us.
At the shed.
Someone wanted everyone inside dead.
Marcus grabbed a wooden table and pushed it against the wall.
“Back exit!””
We moved.
Ray hesitated.
I grabbed his jacket.
“You’re coming too.””
He looked shocked.
“Why?””
“Because I want answers.””
We ran through the back door into the woods.
The Rottweiler stayed beside Lily, protecting her.
Bullets hit the trees behind us.
The four of us disappeared into the darkness.
For ten minutes, we ran.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody stopped.
Finally, we reached an old service road where my truck was parked.
Everyone climbed inside.
Lily sat in the back seat, exhausted.
Marcus sat beside her.
Ray sat across from me.
And I hated that I needed all three of them alive.
Because every one of them held a piece of the truth.
The truck engine started.
As we pulled away from the farmhouse, my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One picture.
A woman standing in front of a motel.
Danielle.
Alive.
My hands tightened around the phone.
Under the picture was a message.
*“She never wanted you to find her.””*
Then another message appeared.
A second later.
*“Because she knows what you did.””*
I looked at Marcus.
He saw the screen.
His face went pale.
“Cole…”
I turned the phone toward him.
“What did I do?””
Marcus said nothing.
That scared me.
Because for the first time in my life…
May you like
I wasn’t chasing someone else’s secret.
I was chasing my own.
