Chapter 8: The Brother I Never Knew

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The ballroom disappeared.

The guests.

The broken chandelier.

The wedding decorations.

The people who had spent years hiding pieces of my life.

Everything faded except the voice on the phone.

“My name is Elijah.””

My brother.

The word felt impossible.

Like something from a dream.

Or a nightmare.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying silently.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

She knew.

She had always known.

“Daniel?””

Elijah’s voice came through again.

“You still there?””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Yes.””

My voice barely worked.

“I’m here.””

A shaky breath came from the other side.

“I didn’t know if you would answer.””

“Why wouldn’t I?””

There was a long pause.

“Because everyone told me you hated me.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

My mother closed her eyes.

Victor looked away.

My father looked like he wanted to speak.

But I kept listening.

“Who told you that?””

Elijah didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Dad.””

I looked at my father.

Robert Carter.

The man who had spent the entire night surrounded by secrets.

“Dad told you I hated you?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because he said you blamed me.””

“For what?””

The silence that followed felt heavier than any answer.

Then Elijah whispered:

“For Mom.””

I looked at my mother.

She was crying harder now.

“Daniel…”

I ignored everyone.

“Elijah, where are you?””

“I’m outside the city.””

“Why didn’t you come here?””

A bitter laugh came through the phone.

“Because every time I got close, someone stopped me.””

My eyes moved toward my father.

“Who?””

Elijah hesitated.

“I don’t know all of them.””

That sentence sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Everyone knew something.

Nobody knew everything.

“What do you know?””

Elijah’s breathing became uneven.

“I know Mom didn’t disappear.””

“I know.””

“I know Dad lied.””

“I know.””

“And I know Vanessa’s father was involved.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She stood frozen.

Her father.

The man whose name had just entered the center of my nightmare.

“What did he do?””

Nobody moved.

Everyone was listening.

Even my father.

Elijah’s voice lowered.

“He was the one who arranged everything.””

My stomach twisted.

“Everything?””

“Yes.””

“The fake death?””

“Yes.””

“The documents?””

“Yes.””

“The people who kept Mom hidden?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked devastated.

Not surprised.

Devastated.

And that told me something.

She knew more.

“Vanessa.””

Everyone looked at her.

She flinched.

“Daniel…”

“Did you know?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Not everything.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Again.

“How much?””

She wiped her face.

“My father told me your mother was dangerous.””

I stared at her.

“Dangerous?””

She nodded.

“He said she was trying to destroy your family.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was young.””

The words came out immediately.

Then she looked at me.

“I was twenty-nine, Daniel. I wasn’t a child.””

That honesty surprised me.

She took a breath.

“My father was controlling. He always made everything sound like he was saving people.””

I looked at my father.

That phrase again.

Saving.

Protecting.

The same language everyone used.

“What did your father want from my mother?””

Vanessa looked toward Victor.

Then my father.

Then me.

“She found evidence.””

“What evidence?””

She swallowed.

“Evidence that my father and your father were partners.””

My chest tightened.

“Partners?””

“Yes.””

My father closed his eyes.

Victor’s expression changed.

The room understood.

Everyone understood.

Except me.

Again.

I looked at my father.

“You and Vanessa’s father worked together?””

My father didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Answer me.””

“Yes.””

The word came quietly.

But it destroyed something inside me.

“How long?””

“Years.””

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe there was still more.

“My entire life?””

My father looked away.

“Yes.””

My mother whispered:

“I tried to expose them.””

I turned toward her.

“And that’s why you disappeared?””

She nodded.

“I found records.””

“What records?””

She looked at Elijah’s voice still connected on the phone.

“Records about children.””

The room became silent.

My blood went cold.

“Children?””

My mother looked at me.

“I found out they had been moving money through fake identities.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with children?””

She looked at my father.

“Because some of those identities belonged to children who never existed.””

I felt sick.

My father’s face changed.

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Daniel deserves the truth.””

She looked at me.

“Your brother wasn’t hidden because he was unwanted.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because he found out what they were doing.””

I looked at the phone.

“Elijah?””

“Yes.””

His voice was quiet.

“I was seventeen.””

The room froze.

“You were seventeen?””

“When I found the files.””

My heart pounded.

“What files?””

“The same ones Mom found.””

I looked at my mother.

“You both found them?””

She nodded.

“But they found us first.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“What happened?””

Elijah was silent.

Then:

“They tried to make me disappear.””

The words barely left his mouth.

I closed my eyes.

My brother.

A person I never knew existed.

A person who had spent years hiding.

Just like my mother.

“Where were you?””

“Different places.””

“How did you survive?””

Another pause.

“Someone helped me.””

“Who?””

Elijah hesitated.

Then answered:

“Marcus.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus froze.

I stared at him.

“You helped him?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“You knew?””

“I knew about Elijah.””

“You knew I had a brother?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

Marcus looked broken.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked at my father.

Then lowered his voice.

“Because your father made sure I understood what would happen if I did.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“That’s a lie.””

Marcus looked at him.

“No, Robert.””

The use of his first name shocked everyone.

“You threatened me.””

Silence.

Marcus continued.

“You threatened Elijah.””

My father said nothing.

And that was enough.

I turned away.

My entire life was a collection of missing pages.

Then my phone buzzed.

Elijah again.

“Daniel.””

I answered.

“What?””

“You need to leave.””

I looked around.

“What?””

“Now.””

“Why?””

His voice became urgent.

“Because I tracked the signal from the phone.””

My heart raced.

“What signal?””

“The one sending the messages.””

Everyone became still.

Elijah continued.

“It’s coming from inside the ballroom.””

My eyes moved slowly around the room.

Everyone looked back at me.

Guests.

Friends.

Family.

Enemies.

Someone here had been watching us.

Someone here had been sending warnings.

“Who?””

Elijah’s breathing changed.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“I found the device.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“Near the entrance.””

My eyes moved toward the fallen man.

The envelope.

The broken glass.

The security guards.

And then I saw it.

A small black device hidden beneath the flower arrangement.

Recording everything.

My blood went cold.

Someone had been listening.

Someone had heard every confession.

Every secret.

Every accusation.

Then the device suddenly made a sound.

A voice recording started playing.

Everyone froze.

Because it was my mother’s voice.

But younger.

Six years ago.

And she was crying.

“If anything happens to me, Daniel must never know the truth about his brother.””

My mother covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“Because if he finds out who really betrayed us…”

A pause.

Then my younger mother whispered:

“He will never forgive the person he loves most.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

But not because of the recording.

Because she knew what came next.

My phone buzzed again.

A message from Elijah.

One sentence.

*Daniel, I found the original recording. The person your mother was protecting wasn’t your father.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*It was Vanessa.*
