Chapter 15: The Truth Beneath the Flowers
Nia couldn’t move.
She couldn’t speak.
Her mother stood in the doorway of the funeral chapel.
Older than she remembered.
Tired.
Holding a secret that looked heavier than grief.
“Mom?””
The word barely escaped.
Her mother looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
That was all it took.
Nia understood.
Not everything.
But enough.
“You knew.””
Her mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The room erupted.
Detective Brooks immediately stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Nia barely heard her.
She only saw her mother.
The person who had raised her.
The person who had comforted her.
The person she trusted most.
“You knew about Marcus?””
Her mother nodded.
“I knew.””
“How long?””
“From the beginning.””
Nia felt like the floor disappeared.
“Why?””
Her mother looked at Marcus’s coffin.
“Because Marcus asked me to help him.””
Nobody spoke.
Calvin laughed quietly.
“So now everyone admits they were involved.””
Nia turned toward him.
“You knew too.””
Calvin looked away.
For once, he had no answer.
Her mother walked forward slowly.
“I need you to understand something.””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I don’t want another explanation.””
Her mother stopped.
“I know.””
“Everyone kept protecting me.””
Tears filled Nia’s eyes.
“But nobody asked what I wanted.””
Her mother nodded.
“You’re right.””
The honesty hurt.
“Marcus knew the truth would destroy you.””
Nia looked at the coffin.
“And he was wrong.””
A pause.
“Because living without the truth destroyed me anyway.””
Her mother looked down.
Then whispered:
“The person who attacked Marcus wasn’t Calvin.””
Everyone turned.
Calvin looked surprised.
“It wasn’t me?””
“No.””
She looked at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Then Terrence.
Then finally—
Detective Brooks.
The detective’s face changed.
Nia noticed.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at Brooks.
Her mother continued.
“The person who arranged everything was the person Marcus went to for help.””
The room went silent.
Detective Brooks slowly shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus’s phone vibrated.
One final time.
Everyone looked.
A message appeared.
*Nia, if you reached this point, you finally know.*
A pause.
*The person who helped destroy my life was the person everyone believed was saving us.*
Nia looked at Detective Brooks.
The detective’s face had lost all emotion.
Then another message appeared.
*Look inside the detective’s folder.*
Brooks immediately reached for it.
Too late.
Nia grabbed it first.
Inside were documents.
Bank transfers.
Photos.
Records.
And one name repeated everywhere.
Detective Lauren Brooks.
Nia stared.
“No…”
Brooks stepped back.
“I can explain.””
The same words.
Again.
Nia laughed through her tears.
“Everyone can explain.””
Brooks’s expression changed.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Nia held the papers.
“I understand now.””
Brooks shook her head.
“Marcus was supposed to give me the evidence.””
A silence.
“He trusted me.””
Nia looked at her.
“And you betrayed him.””
Brooks looked broken.
“I didn’t mean for him to die.””
Nobody moved.
The truth finally stood in the room.
Not hidden.
Not protected.
Not softened.
Marcus had discovered the theft.
Calvin had been involved.
Daniel had followed him.
Evelyn had tried to protect everyone.
But Detective Brooks had been the one Marcus trusted to expose the truth.
And she had been the one who buried it.
Nia walked to Marcus’s coffin.
Her hand touched the edge.
All the anger.
All the confusion.
All the pain.
Finally had somewhere to go.
“You knew I would find this.””
She looked at the phone.
Marcus’s final message remained.
Her mother stepped beside her.
“He loved you.””
Nia nodded.
“I know.””
A small smile appeared through tears.
“He always did.””
Outside, sunlight filled the chapel windows.
The same bright light that had entered when Nia walked in wearing a broken wedding dress.
But she was not the same woman anymore.
She came looking for a dead man’s secret.
She found the truth.
She found the people who lied.
And she found the final thing Marcus had been trying to give her.
Not revenge.
Not answers.
Freedom.
The phone screen lit up one last time.
A scheduled message.
Written months earlier.
*Nia, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry I couldn’t stand beside you today.*
Her tears fell.
*But I need you to know something.*
A pause.
*You were never the person I was trying to save from the truth.*
Another line appeared.
*You were the person I trusted to survive it.*
Nia closed her eyes.
And for the first time in days…
She let herself say goodbye.
Not to a mystery.
Not to a secret.
To Marcus.
May you like
The man who loved her enough to leave behind the truth.
Even when he couldn’t stay to tell it himself.
