Chapter 9: Twenty Minutes

Nia read the message again.

Then she checked the time.

Twenty minutes.

Whoever had sent the warning knew about Daniel's survival, knew that Evelyn Price was connected to the accident, and appeared to know enough about the hospital to anticipate what Victor might do next.

That could make the sender a witness.

Or another person manipulating the investigation.

Nia refused to assume either.

She turned to the nurse.

“Has anyone asked for Maya's room number or Daniel's location since the last security check?””

“Yes. A man called the nurses' station asking to speak with the attending physician. He claimed to be from corporate legal.””

“Did he give a name?””

“Malcolm Reed.””

Nia's expression hardened.

“Did anyone disclose information?””

“No. The charge nurse refused and reported the call.””

“Good. Please make sure the team knows not to share patient information with unauthorized callers.””

The nurse nodded.

Maya gripped her phone.

“Is Daniel in danger?””

“I don't know,” Nia said honestly.

“But we're taking precautions.””

“What about Evelyn?””

“We're going to find out where she was taken.””

Maya looked at the screen again.

“The message says twenty minutes.””

“We won't let an anonymous countdown force us into a mistake.””

“But what if it's real?””

Nia pulled her chair closer.

“Then every minute matters. That's why we need facts, not panic.””

She called the hospital security supervisor and asked him to coordinate with the appropriate authorities regarding Evelyn's possible transfer. She provided the information Daniel had given them, along with the message about the silver watch, and requested that all relevant access and transfer records be preserved.

Then she asked Patricia to join them.

Patricia entered the room carrying the manila envelope. She looked exhausted, but her expression had changed. The uncertainty that had weighed on her was being replaced by something harder.

Determination.

“Maya,” she said softly.

Maya reached for her aunt's hand.

“Is Daniel really alive?””

“Yes, baby.””

Patricia sat beside the bed and held her niece's hand between both of hers.

“He's alive.””

Maya began crying again, but this time the tears carried a fragile thread of relief.

Patricia kissed her forehead.

“We're going to get him through this.””

Nia waited until they had a moment together.

Then she asked Patricia about the original inspection report.

“Daniel mentioned copies of the records,” she said.

“You told me he gave you the documents, but did he ever explain what was missing from the official file?””

Patricia opened the envelope.

“He said someone had removed a page showing that the vehicle had been released before the inspection was completed.””

“Who had access to the report?””

“Several people. The maintenance supervisor, compliance, and the executive office.””

“Did Daniel name anyone?””

Patricia hesitated.

“He said Malcolm Reed had promised to help him. But afterward, he became suspicious of everyone.””

Maya looked up.

“Why didn't he tell me?””

“Because he wanted to protect you.””

“He should have trusted me.””

Patricia squeezed her hand.

“He did trust you. That's why he told you to keep the phone.””

Maya looked down at the damaged device.

A new thought crossed her face.

“What if the video isn't the only recording?””

Nia turned toward her.

“What do you mean?””

Maya opened the phone's file manager, navigating carefully through the damaged interface.

“I used to save Daniel's voice messages. Sometimes I backed them up locally because our signal at home was terrible.””

She opened a folder.

Several audio files appeared, each labeled with a date.

One file was marked with the night of the accident.

Maya stared at it.

“I don't remember recording this.””

Nia leaned forward without touching the device.

“Don't play it yet. Let's preserve the phone and have the appropriate technical team examine the files.””

Maya nodded reluctantly.

Then she noticed something beneath the list of audio files.

A small document icon.

The filename was partially corrupted, but enough remained to read:

*EP_TRANSFER_...*

Patricia leaned closer.

“Evelyn Price?””

“Maybe,” Nia said.

“We shouldn't assume until we verify it.””

She photographed the screen and contacted the security supervisor again.

Within minutes, he called back.

The hospital had identified a vehicle transfer record connected to Evelyn Price. She had been brought to a separate medical facility under a temporary identification entry, then transferred again before her identity could be fully verified.

The latest record listed no confirmed destination.

Nia's grip tightened around her phone.

“Who authorized the transfer?””

“The paperwork carries a signature attributed to a contracted medical coordinator. We're verifying the signature now.””

“Was Victor Hale listed?””

“Not directly. But the transport request originated from an account associated with his company's emergency response contract.””

Nia closed her eyes for a brief moment.

When she opened them, Maya was watching her.

“They moved her,” Maya whispered.

“It appears someone arranged a transfer. We haven't established who gave the final authorization or where she is now.””

“But Daniel said she was alive.””

“He said he saw someone being moved and heard Victor say she was alive. That's important information, but we need to verify the person's identity and current condition.””

Maya looked away, visibly struggling to accept the careful distinction.

“Everyone keeps telling me what we don't know.””

“I know that's frustrating.””

“What if by the time we know everything, she's gone?””

Nia sat beside her.

“Then we make sure the people responsible have fewer opportunities to hide what they've done. We document every lead, protect the witnesses, and follow the evidence.””

Maya wiped her cheeks.

“I want to help.””

“You already have.””

“No. I mean I want to do something.””

Nia considered her request.

“You can help by telling us everything you remember, preserving your phone, and not allowing anyone to pressure you into changing your statement. You don't have to put yourself in danger to prove you're brave.””

Maya nodded slowly.

A knock sounded at the door.

The security supervisor entered with a printed report.

“General, we've confirmed something else.””

Nia stood.

“Go ahead.””

“The transfer authorization includes a contact number. It's registered to a corporate office, but the call logs show that the same number contacted this hospital shortly before Mr. Hale arrived.””

“Who made the call?””

“We're still verifying the caller's identity.””

He handed her the report.

At the bottom of the page was a handwritten notation from the hospital's intake staff.

*CALLER REQUESTED THAT THE PATIENT BE MARKED AS DECEASED PENDING CONFIRMATION.*

Maya stared at the words.

“They tried to say Daniel was dead before anyone even knew where he was.””

Nia folded the report.

“That is exactly why the records must be preserved.””

Patricia looked toward the door.

“Where's Malcolm Reed?””

“We don't know yet,” Nia replied.

“Security is checking whether he left the building and whether he accessed any restricted areas.””

Maya's phone vibrated in her hand.

Another message.

The same unknown number.

*THE PASSENGER WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE CLINIC. ASK FOR ROOM 12.*

Nia immediately photographed the message.

“Did you recognize this number when Evelyn contacted you?””

Maya shook her head.

“No. It was always hidden.””

Nia called the security supervisor and relayed the new information. She asked him to coordinate verification of the private clinic's identity and location through official channels rather than sending anyone there based solely on an anonymous message.

Then she turned to Maya.

“If this is genuine, it may give us a lead. If it's a trap, we're not walking into it blindly.””

Maya's eyes stayed on the screen.

“Why would someone help us without telling us who they are?””

“There are several possibilities.””

“Which one do you believe?””

Nia considered the question.

“I believe someone knows more than they've told us. That's all I can say right now.””

The supervisor returned several minutes later.

The clinic named in the message had confirmed that a patient matching Evelyn Price's description had been admitted under a temporary identity. Staff could not release her medical information without proper authorization, but they had confirmed that she was alive and receiving care.

Nia exhaled slowly.

“Have the appropriate authorities been notified?””

“Yes. They're arranging contact with the clinic and verifying the chain of custody for the transfer records.””

Maya covered her mouth.

“She survived.””

Patricia wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

“She survived, sweetheart.””

For the first time since the accident, Maya allowed herself to believe that the night might not have ended in the way everyone had told her.

Then Nia's phone rang.

The security supervisor's voice came through, urgent and controlled.

“General, we have a problem. Someone attempted to access Daniel's room using credentials issued to Malcolm Reed.””

“Was access granted?””

“No. The nurse challenged the individual, and he left before security arrived.””

“Did anyone identify him?””

A pause.

“The nurse says he was wearing a dark suit and a silver watch.””

Nia went completely still.

Maya heard the words.

Her eyes widened.

“Victor.””

Nia didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked through the glass.

Victor was no longer in the corridor.

The elevator stood open and empty.

Then the supervisor spoke again.

“General, there's one more thing. The visitor's badge was issued under a name we haven't verified.””

“What name?””

“Daniel Brooks.””

Maya's face drained of color.

“That doesn't make sense. Daniel is in intensive care.””

Nia picked up her phone.

“Lock down the relevant access records, notify hospital security, and make sure no one enters Daniel's room without verification. Coordinate with the clinical team and the authorities.””

She ended the call.

Patricia clutched Maya's hand.

“What's happening?””

Nia looked at them both.

“Someone is using Daniel's identity to get close to him.””

Maya stared at her damaged phone.

Then, with trembling fingers, she opened the message thread from the unknown sender.

A final message had appeared.

*YOU FOUND EVELYN. NOW FIND THE PERSON WHO SIGNED HER OUT.*

Below it was an image.

A photograph of a hospital transfer form.

The signature at the bottom was clear.

Malcolm Reed.

But beside his signature, in a box marked Receiving Party, was another name.

Victor Hale.

And beneath that, in smaller print, appeared the time the transfer had been authorized.

It was the same minute Daniel's accident had been reported.

Maya slowly raised her eyes to Nia.

“He didn't just know about the accident,” she whispered.

“He arranged something before anyone even called for help.””

Nia studied the document, her expression hardening.

“We still need to authenticate this image.””

Maya nodded, but her voice trembled.

“Then let's do it.””

Outside the room, an alarm sounded from the intensive care unit.

The security supervisor called again.

This time, he didn't wait for Nia to answer.

“General Carter, Daniel Brooks is missing from his room.””
