Chapter 7: The Promise His Mother Kept
“Tell me what you promised Elena.””
Marcus stood beside the dining table, his phone clenched in one hand. The unknown sender's message remained on the screen, its words bright against the dark background. Beside it lay the broken silver locket, the hidden photograph, and the bracelet he had found among his late wife's belongings.
Loretta didn't sit down.
For several seconds, she studied her son as though she were trying to decide how much truth he could bear.
Then she pulled out a chair.
“Sit, Marcus.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“You've spent the entire evening telling me there are things I don't understand. Now you're telling me you promised my wife something you never shared with me. I'm done sitting around while everyone decides what I deserve to know.””
Loretta's shoulders sank.
“You're right.””
The admission startled him more than an argument would have.
She folded her hands on the table.
“When Elena first came into our lives, she was already carrying something painful. She didn't tell me everything, and I didn't demand that she do so. But before you married her, she asked me for a favor.””
“What favor?””
“She asked me to protect something she had entrusted to me.””
Marcus pointed toward the objects.
“The locket? The bracelet?””
Loretta shook her head.
“Not those.””
“Then what?””
“A promise.””
He laughed bitterly.
“That's not an answer.””
“No. It isn't.””
Loretta looked toward the living room, where Noah was still asleep beneath his blanket. She lowered her voice.
“Elena came to see me one afternoon, shortly before your wedding. She was frightened. Not of you, Marcus.
She loved you. But she was afraid that something from her past would follow her into your marriage.””
Marcus gripped the back of a chair.
“What from her past?””
“She wouldn't tell me everything. She only asked me to promise that if certain information ever came to light, I would let her explain it to you herself.””
“Certain information about what?””
“About someone she had known before you.””
Marcus felt his pulse hammering.
“Vanessa.””
Loretta didn't answer.
“Was it Vanessa?””
“I cannot tell you that with certainty.””
“You recognized the photograph.””
“I recognized Elena. I recognized that the second woman was probably Vanessa after you unfolded it. But I never met Vanessa through Elena, and Elena never introduced her to me.””
“Then how did you know there was something hidden in the locket?””
Loretta looked at the broken silver casing.
“Because Elena once told me she had placed something important where only someone who truly needed to know would find it.””
Marcus stared at her.
“She gave that locket to Noah.””
“Yes.””
“And you never thought to tell me?””
“I thought she would tell you when she was ready.””
“She died, Mom.””
The words came out harsher than he intended.
Loretta's face crumpled.
“I know.””
“No, I don't think you do. You had years to say something. You watched me raise my son alone.
You watched me struggle to understand what happened to Elena. And you let me believe there was nothing more to know.””
“I didn't know what there was to know.””
“But you knew there was something.””
Loretta lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a denial.
Marcus walked to the window and pressed his fingertips against the sill. Outside, the neighborhood was quiet. The bright kitchen lights reflected his own tense face in the glass.
He thought of Elena sitting at their kitchen table, smiling as Noah drew pictures with crayons. He remembered her slipping the silver locket around their son's neck and telling him to take care of it.
He had assumed the gift was sentimental.
Now he wondered whether it had been a message.
“Did Elena ever mention a man?”” Marcus asked.
Loretta looked up sharply.
“What?””
“The unknown sender says Elena made a promise to someone. It keeps referring to a man. Did she ever mention someone she was protecting?””
Loretta's lips parted.
Then she looked away.
“Marcus, I don't know who is sending those messages. You should be careful about trusting them.””
“I'm not asking whether I should trust them. I'm asking what you know.””
“I know that Elena was afraid of being misunderstood.””
“By whom?””
“I don't know.””
He slapped his palm against the table.
“Everybody keeps saying they don't know!””
Loretta flinched, and Marcus immediately regretted the gesture.
He drew a breath.
“I'm sorry.””
She shook her head.
“No. You have every right to be angry.””
His phone vibrated.
Another message from the unknown number.
*Your mother is telling you only half the story. Ask her about the day Elena brought the bracelet.*
Marcus looked at the silver bracelet.
“What day?””
Loretta went pale.
Marcus saw it immediately.
“You remember.””
She slowly reached for the bracelet but stopped before touching it.
“I remember Elena coming to my house with it.””
“When?””
“Several years ago.””
“What did she say?””
Loretta's fingers trembled.
“She asked me to keep it safe. She said it belonged to someone who might someday come looking for it.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Someone who might come looking for it?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you ever ask?””
“I did. She told me she couldn't explain without breaking a promise she'd made.””
Marcus let out a hollow laugh.
“So you agreed to keep a piece of jewelry for an unnamed person because my wife asked you to?””
“She was frightened, Marcus.””
“And that was enough?””
Loretta looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“She was family.””
The room fell silent.
Marcus picked up the bracelet and turned the oval charm between his fingers. The tiny indentation near the clasp caught the light.
He pressed it gently.
The charm clicked open.
Inside was a narrow piece of folded paper, so small that it had been invisible until the metal casing separated.
Marcus carefully removed it.
The paper contained a single line of handwriting.
*For the child who deserves the truth.*
His breath caught.
Loretta covered her mouth.
Marcus unfolded the paper completely. There was no name, no date, and no explanation.
Only those seven words.
“Who is the child?”” he whispered.
Loretta shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Could it be Noah?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus placed the note beside the hidden photograph.
The unknown sender had told him to ask his mother about the bracelet. Loretta had admitted that Elena left it with her. And the message inside the charm referred to a child who deserved the truth.
He looked at the photograph again.
Elena and Vanessa stood side by side, smiling at the camera.
What connected them?
Why had Elena hidden the photograph?
And why had she trusted Loretta with a bracelet containing a message about a child?
Marcus's phone vibrated once more.
This time, the message was longer.
*If you want to know why Vanessa was beside Elena, ask Vanessa what she promised the child.*
Marcus immediately called his fiancée.
She answered on the first ring.
“Marcus?””
“I'm asking you one question. I need an honest answer.””
“All right.””
He looked at the note in his hand.
“What promise did you make to a child before you met me?””
Vanessa stopped breathing audibly.
Then she whispered five words.
“Who told you about that?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
May you like
She hadn't denied it.
And somewhere inside the house, Noah stirred beneath his blanket, unaware that the adults around him were beginning to uncover a truth that had been hidden long before he was born.
