Chapter 11: The Woman Who Signed the Death Certificate

Marcus felt as though the chapel floor had vanished beneath him.

“Explain that,” he said.

Claire gripped his hand.

“Margaret was the nurse who helped deliver the twins. She was also the person who arranged for the hospital to list me as deceased.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You just told me you were held against your will.””

“I was. But Margaret was involved before that.””

“Then why did you trust her with Sophie?””

“Because she saved our daughter from Richard the first time he tried to take her.””

Claire spoke quickly, as though she feared she might lose the courage to continue.

After the twins were born, Margaret had discovered that Adrian Cole was falsifying medical records. She confronted him and learned that he had been paid by Richard to conceal Sophie's birth.

Margaret secretly contacted Claire and offered to help.

Together, they arranged for Sophie to leave the hospital under a different identity.

But the plan failed when Richard discovered the deception.

“He found me at home,” Claire whispered.

“He told me Sophie had been taken to a place where I would never find her. Then he offered me a choice.””

Marcus tightened his grip.

“What choice?””

“Give him access to the children's inheritance, or watch you and Ethan suffer.””

“And you agreed?””

“I pretended to agree.””

She looked at him with desperate eyes.

“I told him I would cooperate. I signed documents he put in front of me. I thought I could use the time to find Sophie.””

“But Margaret signed your death certificate.””

Claire nodded.

“She told the hospital I had died because Richard was watching every medical record. She believed that if I officially disappeared, he would stop searching for me.””

Marcus stepped back.

“You expect me to believe that she faked your death to protect you?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“How it sounds?”” His voice rose.

“I buried an empty coffin. I raised our son alone. I spent four years visiting your grave while you were alive somewhere in this world!””

Claire flinched.

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

He turned away, struggling to breathe.

Detective Grant approached them.

“Mr. Hale, we need to move. The suspect is still at large, and we cannot assume this location is secure.””

Marcus looked at Claire.

“Can you walk?””

“Yes.””

He helped her stand.

Before they left the chapel, Detective Grant examined the photograph Richard had dropped. A small emblem appeared in the lower corner: a white rose inside a circle.

Marcus recognized it.

“The Rosewood estate.””

Grant looked at him.

“What is that?””

“An old property my father sold years ago. It belonged to a private medical foundation before it was converted into a residential facility.””

Claire's eyes widened.

“That's where Margaret took Sophie.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“You know that for certain?””

“Richard mentioned it once. He said Sophie was being kept somewhere nobody would think to look.””

Grant called the police dispatcher.

Within minutes, officers were preparing to search the estate.

But Marcus's phone rang before they could leave.

Eleanor.

He answered.

“Tell me you have good news.””

“I found something in the archive,” she said.

“A document hidden inside the original trust file.””

“What document?””

“A guardianship agreement. It names Margaret Ellis as Sophie's legal guardian.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Where is she now?””

“I don't know. But there's a second signature on the agreement.””

“Whose?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Victoria Hale.””

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

“Victoria signed the document?””

“Yes. And the date is from six months before you married her.””

Claire had heard enough to understand.

“She knew about Sophie before she entered your life.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Victoria?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“Richard must have sent her to make sure Sophie stayed hidden and that you never discovered the truth.””

A bitter laugh escaped Marcus.

“She married me, smiled at my son, and stood beside me while I mourned you.””

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I'm sorry.””

He wanted to scream.

Instead, he took her hand.

“Let's find our daughter.””

The police convoy reached Rosewood Estate shortly after midnight.

The property sat behind tall iron gates, surrounded by dark gardens and an overgrown stone wall. The main building had once been a private rehabilitation center, but it had closed years earlier.

Most of the windows were boarded up.

One light glowed on the second floor.

Detective Grant raised her radio.

“Units one and two, secure the perimeter. Nobody enters or leaves without authorization.””

Marcus stood beside Claire near the gate.

“Do you think Sophie is inside?””

“I hope so.””

He looked at her.

“You haven't seen her in four years.””

Claire's face tightened.

“Not since she was a baby.””

“Then how can you be sure Margaret kept her here?””

“Because Margaret told me she would protect Sophie until I could come back.””

Marcus looked toward the building.

“And if Margaret has been working with Richard all along?””

Claire did not answer.

They entered through a side door after officers confirmed the corridor was clear.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and disinfectant. Old medical equipment stood beneath plastic covers. A reception desk had been overturned, and several patient files lay scattered across the floor.

Marcus followed the detective down a narrow hallway.

At the end stood a locked door.

A faint sound came from behind it.

A child humming.

Claire stopped.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

It was the same melody she had recorded for Ethan.

The little song about two hearts that would always find each other.

Marcus knocked gently.

“Hello?””

The humming stopped.

A girl's voice answered.

“Who is it?””

Claire moved toward the door.

“Sophie?””

Silence.

Then a small voice whispered, “Mom?””

Claire began to cry.

“It's me, sweetheart.””

A chair scraped against the floor.

Footsteps approached.

The lock clicked.

The door opened a few inches.

A girl stood in the doorway, her dark hair falling around her shoulders. She wore a white sweater and a ribbon around her wrist.

Marcus recognized her immediately.

The same eyes as Ethan.

The same chin as Claire.

The same small scar beneath her left eyebrow that appeared in the family photographs.

Sophie stared at Claire.

For several seconds, she seemed unable to move.

Then she threw herself into her mother's arms.

“Mom!””

Claire dropped to her knees, wrapping both arms around her daughter.

“Oh, my baby. My beautiful baby.””

Sophie sobbed into her shoulder.

“I thought you were dead.””

“I know, sweetheart. I'm so sorry.””

Marcus stood frozen.

He had imagined meeting his daughter for years without knowing he was imagining it.

Now she was standing in front of him, alive and real.

He crouched beside them.

“Sophie?””

The girl turned toward him.

Her eyes widened.

“Daddy?””

Marcus nodded, unable to speak.

She reached out and touched his face as though she needed proof he wasn't another person in a dream.

“You look like Ethan,” she whispered.

Marcus laughed through his tears.

“You look like your mother.””

Sophie threw her arms around him.

For a moment, the three of them held each other in the dusty hallway while the police secured the building around them.

Then Sophie pulled back.

“Where's Ethan?””

Marcus brushed the hair away from her face.

“Safe. He's waiting for us.””

Sophie nodded, but her expression quickly changed.

“We have to leave.””

“Why?””

She looked toward the locked room.

“Because Margaret said she was coming back tonight.””

“Where is she now?””

Sophie hesitated.

“She went to get the papers.””

“What papers?””

“The ones that prove who I really am.””

Marcus looked toward Detective Grant.

The detective stepped closer.

“Sophie, did Margaret tell you who was trying to find you?””

Sophie nodded.

“Grandpa Richard.””

“Did she tell you why?””

“She said he wanted me to sign something when I turned twelve. She said if I signed it, he would get all the money that belongs to me and Ethan.””

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“What else did she say?””

Sophie looked at her mother.

“Mom, Margaret said she was the one who made the car crash happen.””

Claire went perfectly still.

“What car crash?””

Sophie swallowed.

“The crash that made everyone think you were dead.””

Marcus stared at Claire.

The woman who had signed her death certificate had apparently helped stage the accident that erased her from their lives.

And now that woman was coming back.

Detective Grant ordered officers to search the building.

A radio crackled.

“Possible vehicle approaching from the north entrance.””

Marcus pulled Sophie close.

“Stay with your mother.””

Outside, headlights swept across the boarded windows.

A car stopped in front of the building.

The driver's door opened.

A woman stepped out carrying a leather folder.

Margaret Ellis had arrived.

And she was holding a gun.
