Chapter 3: The Missing Child and the Hidden Enemy

The first thing I noticed when the lights returned was the silence.

Not the kind of silence that comes from peace.

The kind that comes after something terrible has already happened.

The ballroom that had been filled with music, laughter, and whispered gossip was now a frozen scene of confusion.

People stood perfectly still.

Some held their phones.

Some looked toward the exits.

Some were pretending not to panic.

But I wasn’t looking at them.

I was looking for Ethan.

My eyes searched the crowd desperately.

The small boy in the oversized brown coat.

The child who walked into my life carrying my sister’s handwriting.

The child who had looked at me like he already knew my entire story.

He was gone.

“Ethan?””

Emily’s voice cracked.

She pushed through the crowd.

“Ethan!””

Panic replaced every emotion on her face.

My sister, the woman who had survived three years of hiding, suddenly looked like a mother who had lost her child in a crowded street.

I grabbed my wheelchair controls and moved forward.

“Where is he?””

Emily turned toward me.

“I don’t know.””

“You were standing right beside him.””

“I know!””

Her voice broke.

The pain in it stopped me.

She wasn’t pretending.

She wasn’t hiding.

She was terrified.

My father immediately raised his voice.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

The guests looked toward him.

Even in chaos, Richard Bennett still sounded like a man used to being obeyed.

“Lock the doors,” he ordered the security team.

I stared at him.

“You’re locking everyone inside?””

His expression hardened.

“We need to find the child.””

“Or make sure nobody leaves?””

The words escaped before I could stop them.

A few people nearby looked shocked.

My father looked at me like I had slapped him.

“Claire.””

“No.””

I moved closer.

“You knew Emily was alive.””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re confused.””

“I’m not.””

“You’ve been through a lot tonight.””

“And you’re avoiding my questions.””

The room became tense.

My father looked away.

That was the answer.

He had always been good at controlling conversations.

But tonight, control was slipping.

Emily returned from searching near the stage.

“He’s not here.””

Her face was pale.

“He wouldn’t leave on his own.””

I looked at her.

“Who could take him?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Emily.””

She looked down.

“Someone who knows how important he is.””

My stomach twisted.

“You mean someone in our family?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

A security guard approached my father.

“Mr. Bennett, we checked the cameras.””

“And?””

The guard swallowed.

“There was a power interruption exactly thirty seconds before the lights went out.””

“That doesn’t happen accidentally,” my father said.

I looked at him.

The way he said it.

So certain.

So calm.

Like he already knew.

“Dad.””

He ignored me.

“Show me the footage.””

The guard hesitated.

“Sir…”

“What?””

“The cameras were manually disabled.””

The entire room reacted.

Whispers spread immediately.

Someone had planned this.

Someone had access.

Someone knew exactly when to strike.

Emily came closer to me.

“Claire, we need to leave.””

I looked at her.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

She stared at me.

“Claire.””

“I spent three years thinking you were dead.””

My voice shook.

“I spent three years wondering if I was ever going to hear your voice again.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And now you’re standing here asking me to run?””

“I’m asking you to survive.””

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

Because I believed her.

Emily wasn’t being dramatic.

She was afraid.

Not for herself.

For me.

A waiter suddenly approached us.

He looked nervous.

“Miss Bennett?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

He glanced around before speaking.

“I think I know where the boy went.””

Emily grabbed his arm.

“Where?””

The waiter looked uncomfortable.

“He was taken through the service hallway.””

My heart stopped.

“Taken?””

The waiter nodded.

“I saw a man carrying him.””

“What man?”” Emily demanded.

The waiter swallowed.

“He was wearing a black suit.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Did you see his face?””

“No.””

“Anything else?””

The waiter thought.

Then his eyes widened.

“He had a silver ring.””

Emily froze.

A terrible expression crossed her face.

“What?””

I looked at her.

“You know who that is.””

She didn’t answer.

“Emily.””

Her lips trembled.

“It can’t be.””

“Who?””

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

“The man who helped cover up the accident.””

The room seemed to spin.

“Who?””

Emily whispered:

“Daniel.””

My father’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But again, I saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

“Who is Daniel?”” I asked.

Nobody spoke.

I looked between them.

“Who is Daniel?””

My father finally answered.

“Your uncle.””

The word felt impossible.

My uncle.

A member of my own family.

Someone who attended my birthday parties.

Someone who brought me gifts as a child.

Someone who stood beside my hospital bed after the accident.

I felt sick.

“No.””

Emily nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because he was there that night.””

The memory came rushing back.

Rain hitting the windshield.

The smell of gasoline.

My sister screaming.

A shadow standing outside the car.

I had always thought my mind was confused because of the trauma.

But now…

Maybe I remembered more than I realized.

“Why would he do that?””

Emily looked away.

“Because of money.””

My father interrupted.

“That’s enough.””

Both of us looked at him.

His voice was sharp.

“Not another word in front of everyone.””

I laughed.

A small, broken laugh.

“Why?””

He stared at me.

“Because you don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me why my sister disappeared.””

Nothing.

“Tell me why my accident happened.””

Nothing.

“Tell me why your brother is kidnapping his own nephew.””

My father looked exhausted.

For the first time in my life, he didn’t look powerful.

He looked defeated.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words hurt.

“Protect me?””

I shook my head.

“You protected yourself.””

Emily looked at me.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I looked at my father.

“I trusted you.””

He stepped closer.

“I love you.””

“Then why did you lie?””

His face fell.

Before he could answer, the ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A man walked inside.

Slow.

Confident.

Unbothered.

He was older than my father, with silver hair and a perfectly tailored suit.

On his right hand was a silver ring.

My heart dropped.

The guests immediately moved away from him.

Emily grabbed my shoulder.

“That’s him.””

Daniel Bennett smiled.

Not like a man who had been accused.

Like a man who knew he had already won.

“Well,” he said calmly.

“After all these years…”

His eyes moved to Emily.

“Little sister.””

Then to me.

“Claire.””

He smiled wider.

“I see you finally learned the truth.””

My hands gripped the wheelchair.

“Where is Ethan?””

Daniel tilted his head.

“Straight to the point.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Where is my son?””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Your son?””

He looked around the room.

“You disappeared for three years and suddenly you return demanding things?””

“Where is he?””

Daniel’s smile faded.

“You should have stayed gone.””

The words chilled me.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked directly at me.

“Because you were never supposed to wake up.””

The room gasped.

My father closed his eyes.

Emily covered her mouth.

And I felt the truth finally reach me.

The accident wasn’t something that happened to me.

It was something someone did to me.

Daniel took one step closer.

“But now that you’re awake…”

He smiled.

“I suppose we need to finish what we started.””

Then his phone rang.

He answered it.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

For the first time, he looked worried.

“What do you mean he escaped?””

Everyone froze.

Daniel listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

And whispered:

“The boy knows where the evidence is.””

My heart pounded.

Evidence.

Ethan wasn’t just a child caught in a family secret.

He was carrying something.

Something someone was willing to destroy lives to hide.

May you like

And then Daniel said the words that changed everything:

“Find Ethan before Claire learns what’s inside that note.””
