The Pregnancy She Invented / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Ultrasound That Belonged to Someone Else

My father didn't hang up.

He stood in the middle of the living room, holding his phone so tightly that his knuckles turned white while Vanessa reached for him with both hands.

“Daniel, give me the phone,” she pleaded.

“Please. You're making a mistake.””

He stepped away from her.

“I'm listening.””

The woman on the line introduced herself as Melissa, the clinic's office manager. Her voice was calm, but the words coming through the speaker seemed to drain the warmth from the room.

“Mr. Brooks, I want to be careful about what I disclose over the phone. However, the documents you emailed our office last month raised concerns. They contain our clinic's name and what appears to be a physician's signature, but we cannot verify that they were issued by us.””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“You sent me those documents,” he said.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I told you I got them from the clinic.””

“Are you saying they're fake?””

“No!””

Melissa continued.

“We have not located a patient record under Vanessa Brooks that matches the information on those images. If you believe these documents have been falsified, we recommend preserving the original files and contacting the appropriate authorities.””

Vanessa lunged toward the phone again.

“She's wrong! Someone has made a mistake!””

Daniel turned his back to her.

“Thank you, Melissa. I'll follow up.””

He ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen. A car passed outside, its tires hissing against the wet road. On the coffee table, the fake pregnancy belly looked grotesquely ordinary, like a costume somebody had forgotten to return after Halloween.

My father lowered himself into the armchair.

“Six months,” he whispered.

Vanessa knelt beside him.

“Daniel, please. Let me explain.””

He stared at the floor.

“Six months of doctor appointments. Six months of you telling me you were sick. Six months of me telling my children they had to be patient because you were carrying our baby.””

“You don't understand what I was going through.””

“Then explain it!””

She recoiled.

My father rarely raised his voice. The sound made Malik step closer to me.

Vanessa pressed her hands together.

“When we got married, you promised we'd have a family. You said you wanted another child.””

“I said I was open to it.””

“You said you wanted one!””

“And you told me you were pregnant.””

Her face crumpled.

“I wanted to make you happy.””

“By lying to me?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

Daniel stared at her.

“How do you fix a fake pregnancy?””

She began crying again.

I had spent months watching her cry whenever she needed something. A new phone. A weekend away.

An expensive coat she claimed was necessary because she was always cold. Each time, my father would soften, apologize for upsetting her, and find a way to give her what she wanted.

But now he remained in his chair.

He didn't touch her.

He didn't tell her everything would be fine.

Vanessa looked at me, and her tears suddenly stopped.

“This is your fault.””

Malik stepped in front of me.

“Stop saying that!””

“If Ariana hadn't spent every day making me feel unwelcome, I wouldn't have been so desperate to prove I belonged in this family!””

I stared at her.

“You told Dad I was pregnant with a problem because I asked you to stop throwing away Mom's things.””

“You have always hated me.””

“I was thirteen when Dad married you!””

“And you made sure I knew I could never replace your precious mother.””

The words struck harder than I expected.

For months, Vanessa had used my grief as evidence of my supposed cruelty. Whenever I resisted her, she claimed I was punishing her for being alive. Whenever I mentioned my mother, she accused me of trying to make her feel like an outsider.

My father finally looked up.

“Don't bring her mother into this.””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“Don't use her mother as an excuse for what you've done.””

It was the first time he'd defended me without making me apologize afterward.

I didn't know what to do with that.

Vanessa rose slowly.

“Daniel, you're upset. We should discuss this privately.””

“No,” he said.

“We're discussing it now.””

She looked around the room, searching for an ally.

Her eyes settled on me.

“Ariana, tell him. Tell him how you've treated me.””

I stared back.

“You want me to tell him the truth?””

“Yes!””

“Fine. You told me to cook because you were nauseous, then made me cook a second dinner because you said the first one smelled wrong. You made me carry laundry upstairs because you claimed lifting things could hurt the baby. You told Dad I was trying to cause a miscarriage when I asked you to pick up your own plate.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“You're twisting everything.””

“You told me I would be sent away when the baby came.””

“I never said that.””

Malik's voice came quietly from beside me.

“You did.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You little liar.””

“Vanessa,” my father warned.

She ignored him.

“You've been filling his head with nonsense for months!””

Malik's hands shook.

“You told me Dad wouldn't love us anymore when the baby arrived. You said we had to behave or he'd send us to live with Grandma.””

My father stood.

“Did you tell my son that?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was trying to make them understand that things would change.””

“Things were going to change because of a baby that doesn't exist?””

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

Daniel walked to the coffee table and picked up the receipt. He read the store name, the date, and the price.

“You bought this four days before you told me you were pregnant.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“I can explain.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because you won't let me!””

“Then explain!””

She pressed a hand against her chest.

“I was afraid you would leave me if I couldn't give you another child. Everyone kept asking when we would have one. Your sister asked.

Your friends asked. Even your father asked before he died!””

“My father died three years before I met you.””

“Exactly!”” she snapped.

“I felt like I was failing before we even started!””

For the first time, I saw something beneath her manipulation that looked like desperation.

But desperation didn't excuse what she had done.

“You could have told him you were scared,” I said.

“You didn't have to turn our lives into this.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You're seventeen. You don't know anything about marriage.””

“No,” I replied.

“But I know what it's like to be lied to by someone who says they love you.””

Her face twisted.

For one second, I thought she might slap me.

Instead, she grabbed the fake belly and shoved it into the box.

“I'm leaving.””

Daniel stepped aside.

She marched toward the stairs, but stopped halfway up.

“You'll regret this,” she said, looking directly at me.

“Both of you.””

Then she disappeared into the bedroom.

A door slammed.

Malik let out a shaky breath.

“Is she going to come back?””

My father didn't answer immediately.

He looked at the staircase as if he were seeing it for the first time.

“I don't know, buddy.””

Malik moved closer to him.

“Dad, are you mad at us?””

The question broke something in my chest.

Daniel dropped to his knees in front of his son.

“No. No, son. I'm not mad at you.””

“Even though I looked in her purse?””

My father closed his eyes.

“I wish you hadn't felt like you had to investigate an adult to get the truth. But you did the right thing by telling me what you found.””

Malik's eyes filled with tears.

“Are we still a family?””

Daniel pulled him into a hug.

“Yes,” he whispered.

“We are.””

I stood beside them, my arms wrapped around myself, wondering whether he remembered that I was still there.

A moment later, he reached for me, too.

I let him hug me.

But I didn't hug him back immediately.

I wanted to. More than anything, I wanted the father I'd known before Vanessa to return.

Still, a hug couldn't erase six months of being called selfish. It couldn't give back the hours I'd spent cleaning while she pretended to be sick. And it couldn't undo every time I'd watched him believe her tears instead of my words.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered into my hair.

I stared over his shoulder at the fake pregnancy belly sitting inside its open box.

“You should have believed me,” I said.

“I know.””

“You should have listened.””

“I know, Ariana.””

His voice broke on my name.

For a moment, I almost forgave him.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked down at the screen.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

**Mr. Brooks, this is Melissa from Dr. Harris's office.

Please call me as soon as possible. We identified the woman whose ultrasound image was used in the documents your wife submitted. She has no connection to your family.**

Daniel read it twice.

Then another message appeared.

*There is also a security concern. Someone used your email address to contact our clinic pretending to be your wife.*

He frowned.

“My email address?””

I leaned closer.

“What does that mean?””

He opened the message thread and scrolled.

A forwarded email appeared, dated five weeks earlier. The sender's name was his own. The message requested copies of prenatal records and included a question about changing the patient's name on a document.

My father stared at the screen.

“I didn't send this.””

Malik looked confused.

“Then who did?””

Daniel tapped the attachment.

It was a screenshot of a conversation.

The account name at the top was Vanessa's.

And beneath it was a message she had sent to someone named *Rochelle*.

If Daniel starts asking questions, I'll tell him the baby is high-risk. He won't challenge anything if I say the doctor warned me.

My father went pale.

A second message followed.

I just need Ariana out of the house before he figures out what I'm doing.

I stopped breathing.

Vanessa wasn't simply afraid of losing my father.

She had been planning something.

Something that involved me.

May you like

And as Daniel scrolled further down the conversation, he found a message that had been sent only three days earlier.

Once the money comes through, everything will be different.
