Chapter 14: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Brandon arrived at Margaret's office less than an hour later.

He looked as though he'd aged ten years since our last conversation.

He carried a small cardboard box, held tightly against his chest.

"I kept these," he said.

Margaret gestured toward a chair.

"Take your time.""

Brandon sat down and opened the box.

Inside were photographs, birthday cards, a small silver compass, and a folded letter addressed to him in handwriting I didn't recognize.

He picked up the first photograph.

It showed a younger Vanessa standing on a beach beside a man with dark hair and a narrow scar across his chin.

The date printed on the back was September 2017.

Two years after Michael Hale's supposed death.

I looked at Brandon.

"You're certain this is your father?""

He nodded.

"I remember the scar. I remember his voice. He told me a story about a broken compass when I was six. I never forgot it.""

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because Mom said it was a dream. When I insisted it had happened, she told me I'd imagined the whole thing.""

He took a shaky breath.

"Then she started crying. She said if I ever told anyone, people might take Chloe and me away from her.""

Margaret's expression softened.

"How old were you?""

"Eight.""

No child should have been asked to carry a secret like that.

Brandon unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was uneven, as though the writer had been in a hurry.

Brandon,

If you are reading this, then I have failed to find a way to see you openly. I want you to know that I did not abandon you. There are people who have used my name and my money to protect themselves. I have been trying to recover what was taken and prove what happened.

Your mother may tell you that I am dead. Do not assume that everything you hear is true. I cannot explain everything yet, but I will not stop trying to reach you.

Remember the compass. It points north even when the person holding it is lost.

Your father.

There was no date.

No address.

No explanation of why Michael had disappeared or why he couldn't simply contact his son.

I read it twice.

"Did you ever receive anything else?""

Brandon nodded.

"Birthday cards. A few letters. Mom found one when I was eleven and burned it.""

"Did you tell anyone?""

"No. She said my father was dangerous and that he would destroy our family if I kept looking for him.""

Margaret carefully placed the letter in a protective sleeve.

"We need to authenticate these documents and establish when they were received. But they may help investigators determine whether Michael Hale was alive after the date of his reported death.""

Brandon stared at the photograph.

"If Dad was alive, why didn't he come back?""

"I don't know," I said honestly.

He wiped his face.

"Maybe he was trying to protect us.""

"Maybe. But we won't assume anything until we have evidence.""

Margaret contacted Thomas Reed, who had been reviewing the archived estate documents. She sent him the photograph and a description of the letter.

Within an hour, he called back.

"The estate file contains a death certificate," he said.

"But the copy we have is incomplete. The issuing jurisdiction is listed, yet the supporting medical certification is missing.""

"Could the certificate be fraudulent?"" I asked.

"It's possible. It's also possible that the archived file is incomplete. We need to obtain the original record from the issuing authority.""

"Can you do that?""

"I've already started the process.""

He paused.

"There's another issue. The estate was settled through a private agreement, but the beneficiary account received several payments after the supposed date of Michael's death.""

"How many?""

"Four transfers over eighteen months. The amounts total just under $240,000.""

Brandon covered his mouth.

"That money was supposed to be mine?""

"Not necessarily," Thomas replied.

"We need to determine the account's legal ownership and the terms of the estate. But the transactions are suspicious enough to warrant investigation.""

Margaret asked him to send the available records to the forensic accountant.

When the call ended, Brandon sat motionless.

"My mother told me Dad left debts," he whispered.

"She said there wasn't anything left for me or Chloe.""

I sat beside him.

"Whatever the records show, you didn't cause this.""

"But I helped her get the documents from Maya's trust.""

"You did. And you need to be honest about that. But you also came forward, gave evidence, and helped stop the guardianship petition. You can take responsibility for your choices without carrying the blame for everything your mother did.""

He nodded, though he still looked unconvinced.

Later that afternoon, the forensic accountant called Margaret with preliminary findings from Richard's encrypted drive.

The six-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer had been divided among several entities. Some payments were linked to Northbridge Capital, while others went through accounts associated with Patricia's consulting business.

One account had received money from an insurance settlement connected to Michael Hale.

Another had transferred funds to a company that later paid Vanessa's personal expenses.

But the records did not establish that all the funds were stolen, nor did they show that Michael himself had authorized the transactions.

The accountant needed the original bank records to trace the money fully.

Still, one detail stood out.

The account used to approve the final transfer had been accessed from a device registered to Vanessa.

Margaret looked at me.

"That doesn't prove she personally made the transfer, but it establishes a connection we need to investigate.""

I nodded.

"Then let's keep going.""

That evening, Brandon asked if he could speak to Vanessa.

Margaret advised against an unsupervised conversation, but Brandon insisted he needed to ask her about the man in the photograph.

We arranged a meeting at Margaret's office with both attorneys present.

Vanessa arrived wearing a plain black coat. She looked smaller than I remembered, as if the certainty that had once filled every room she entered had finally drained away.

When Brandon placed the photograph on the table, she stopped moving.

"Where did you get that?""

"From the box where I kept Dad's letters.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"You shouldn't have those.""

"Is this Michael?""

She didn't answer.

"Mom," Brandon said, his voice shaking.

"Is this my father?""

Vanessa sat down.

For several seconds, she looked at the photograph without speaking.

Then she whispered, "Yes.""

Brandon closed his eyes.

"Why did you tell me he was dead?""

"Because I believed he was gone.""

"But you saw him.""

"Yes.""

"More than once?""

Vanessa nodded.

"How many times?""

"I don't know.""

"Try.""

She pressed her fingers against her forehead.

"Three times that I can remember. The first was in 2017. The second was in 2019. The third was the year after that.""

Brandon stared at her.

"You let me believe my father had abandoned me.""

"I was afraid.""

"Of him?""

"Of Patricia.""

Vanessa looked toward Margaret, then back at her son.

"Michael had discovered that money from his family's investment accounts was being diverted through companies Patricia controlled. He confronted her, and she threatened to accuse him of fraud. He was terrified that he would lose custody of you.""

"Then why didn't he come to court?""

"Because Patricia had documents that made it look as though he'd been involved in the transfers. He believed that if he returned, she would use those documents against him.""

Brandon shook his head.

"So you helped him hide?""

"I thought I was protecting you.""

"You told me he was dead.""

"I know.""

"You told me he left us with nothing.""

"I know.""

His voice rose.

"Why?""

Vanessa began crying.

"Because Patricia told me the money was dangerous. She said if I tried to recover it, she would expose my involvement in the financial scheme. She said she'd make sure I lost you and Chloe.""

Brandon pushed the photograph away.

"You could have told the truth.""

"I was afraid.""

"You always say that!""

His words echoed through the room.

For once, Vanessa had no defense.

Margaret intervened before the conversation became more painful.

"Vanessa, did Michael tell you anything about Emily Carter?""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"Yes.""

My whole body went still.

"What did he say?"" I asked.

She looked at me.

"He said Emily had found the same account numbers he had been investigating. He told me she was trying to trace the money back to its source.""

"Did he know Patricia was involved?""

"Yes.""

"Did he know Richard was involved?""

"He suspected someone inside Carter Holdings was helping Patricia, but he didn't know who.""

"Did he speak to Emily directly?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Once.""

"When?""

"About two weeks before Emily was hospitalized.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Emily didn't want you involved. She thought Patricia might use your company to cover up the transfers if she realized you knew about the investigation.""

"Did Emily tell you that?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She asked me to pass a message to Michael. She wanted him to meet her lawyer, Thomas Reed, and provide the records he'd collected.""

"Did he?""

"He tried. But before they could meet, Emily was taken to the hospital.""

The room went silent.

Margaret leaned forward.

"Vanessa, do you have any documentation supporting this account?""

Vanessa reached into her purse and removed a small envelope.

"I kept this because Patricia told me to destroy it. I couldn't.""

Inside was a handwritten note from Emily.

Michael,

I have found the transfer that connects the insurance accounts to Northbridge. The records suggest that someone used my policy information without authorization. I believe the money was moved before I understood what was happening.

Do not contact Daniel yet. If Patricia learns that we are working together, she may try to make him the center of the investigation.

Meet Thomas Reed. Bring the original account statements. We need to protect the children before anyone else gets hurt.

The note was dated three days before Emily's final hospitalization.

I felt the room tilt.

Emily hadn't been investigating a vague financial discrepancy.

She had found a connection between the insurance accounts and the company that had been used to move money from several sources.

And she had been trying to protect all three children.

Maya.

Brandon.

Chloe.

Margaret photographed the note and placed it with the other evidence.

"Where is Michael now?"" she asked Vanessa.

"I don't know.""

"Have you contacted him recently?""

"No.""

"Has Patricia?""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"I don't know.""

I looked at her.

"You said Patricia was afraid of what Michael knew.""

"Yes.""

"Then why would she let him disappear?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"She didn't let him. He vanished after he realized someone had accessed his private accounts. He told me he was going somewhere safe, and then he stopped contacting me.""

Brandon stared at her.

"Is he alive?""

Vanessa couldn't answer.

Margaret promised to pass the information to investigators and request an urgent review of the estate records.

The meeting ended shortly afterward.

As Brandon left, he took the photograph with him.

He didn't say goodbye to Vanessa.

I couldn't blame him.

Outside, Margaret walked beside me toward the parking lot.

"If Michael is alive, he may be the person who can explain the original transactions. But we need to verify that independently.""

I nodded.

"What about Emily's death?""

"The medical investigation will continue. We still don't know whether the altered medication order affected her outcome, and we cannot assume the financial scheme caused her death.""

"I know.""

But I was beginning to understand something Emily had tried to tell me through every letter and document she'd left behind.

She hadn't been protecting money.

She had been protecting people.

And she had known that the truth could put all of us at risk.

My phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered without speaking.

A man whispered, "Daniel Carter?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Michael Hale.""

I stopped walking.

Margaret turned toward me.

Michael continued.

"I know what Patricia did. I know what happened to Emily's records. And I know why she was trying to protect your daughter.""

"Where are you?""

"I can't tell you that yet.""

"Are you alive?""

A strained laugh came through the phone.

"Obviously.""

"Why didn't you come back for your son?""

The line went quiet.

When Michael spoke again, his voice was breaking.

"Because the last time I tried to see Brandon, Patricia told me she would make sure he never saw his mother again.""

I closed my eyes.

"What do you want?""

"To finish what Emily started.""

"Then tell me what happened to her.""

Michael took a breath.

"I will. But first, you need to understand that Patricia didn't change the medication chart because she wanted your wife dead.""

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"Then why?""

"Because Emily had discovered where the money was really going.""

"Where?""

Michael's answer came in a whisper.

"Into an account owned by someone who was supposed to be protecting your family.""

May you like

Then he said the name.

And everything I thought I understood about the last three years fell apart.
