Chapter 9: My Wife's Final Bargain

Vanessa didn't look frightened when she saw me.

She looked inconvenienced.

She pulled out a chair, sat down, and opened the folder as though she were preparing to review a quarterly report.

Daniel remained near the table, his face drained of color.

“You shouldn't have come,” he muttered.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“And you shouldn't have opened your mouth.””

Daniel flinched.

I stepped between them.

“Don't speak to him like that.””

She gave me a thin smile.

“Still playing the hero, Marcus? It's charming. Especially considering how little you know.””

I placed the envelope Daniel had given me beside her folder.

“I know about the transfers. I know about Northbridge. I know Laura discovered the money before she died.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“Laura was confused.””

“She left a recording.””

For the first time, Vanessa's fingers stopped moving.

I continued.

“She told you to stop stealing from our family. She told you that if anything happened to her, I'd find out.””

Vanessa closed the folder.

“And yet here you are, six years later, finally asking the right questions.””

“Why did you threaten her?””

“I didn't threaten her.””

“Why did you warn Daniel that she had to be stopped?””

“I never said that.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“You told me she had documents that could destroy us.””

Vanessa turned slowly.

“Be quiet.””

“No,” he said.

“I'm done protecting you.””

She stood and walked toward him.

“You wouldn't have a company if I hadn't helped you. You wouldn't have had access to those accounts. You would still be begging for contracts from people who barely remembered your name.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“And you wouldn't have had access to Marcus's money if we hadn't helped you.””

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the warehouse.

I caught her wrist before she could strike him again.

“Enough.””

Vanessa looked down at my hand.

“Let go of me.””

I released her.

She straightened her sleeve, then turned toward me.

“You want the truth? Fine. I knew Laura was going to expose the transfers.

I knew she had documents that could put all of us in prison. I tried to persuade her to stay quiet.””

“By threatening my daughter?””

“I never threatened Maya.””

“She told us you said you'd make me disappear from her life.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Maya is a child. Children misunderstand things.””

“She also remembers a man standing beside Laura's car.””

For the first time that evening, Vanessa lost control of her face.

It lasted less than a second.

But I saw it.

“What did she tell you?”” Vanessa asked.

“That a man gave Laura an envelope. That he knew her name. That he told Laura to keep her out of it.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“You've been questioning her?””

“No. She told me because she's frightened of you.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“You've poisoned her against me.””

I felt a cold clarity settle over me.

“No, Vanessa. You did that yourself.””

She turned away and paced beside the table.

“You have no idea what Laura was planning. She wanted to destroy everything. She wanted to take the money, the house, the company—”

“The money was hers and Maya's.””

“It was family money!””

“Then why did you hide it?””

She stopped.

For several seconds, she stared at the floor.

Then she reached into her folder and removed a document.

“You want to know why I did it? Look at this.””

I took the paper.

It was a statement from a financial institution, listing the balance of Maya's custodial trust.

The balance was zero.

Every dollar had been withdrawn.

I looked up.

“Where did the money go?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Into investments.””

“Which investments?””

“Private ventures.””

“Whose ventures?””

She said nothing.

I turned to Daniel.

He looked as though he might be sick.

“Marcus, I didn't know the entire amount had been moved.””

“Did you know the trust was empty?””

He shook his head.

Vanessa laughed.

“Don't look at him. He knew enough.””

Daniel's shoulders sagged.

“I knew some of the transfers went through Northbridge. I didn't know she had drained the trust.””

“You helped her move the money,” I said.

“Yes.””

His admission was quiet.

“I did. I was afraid she'd expose my part in the scheme. I told myself the money would be returned.””

Vanessa pointed at him.

“He was the one who suggested the company structure.””

“And you were the one who used it to take the money,” Daniel replied.

They began arguing over one another, each trying to place the greater share of blame on the other.

I let them.

Every accusation revealed another piece of the scheme.

Daniel had created the financial structure.

Vanessa had used my credentials to authorize transfers.

Someone had certified documents claiming I had consented.

And the money intended for Maya had disappeared.

But none of it explained the night Laura died.

I slammed my hand against the table.

“Who was the man beside her car?””

Both of them fell silent.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at the floor.

I pointed at my wife.

“You know who he was.””

She swallowed.

“I never said I didn't.””

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no words came.

I took out my phone.

“I'm calling Detective Brooks.””

She lunged toward me.

“Don't!””

I stepped back.

“Why? What are you afraid he'll find?””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“You don't understand what will happen if you bring the police into this.””

“I understand that my first wife is dead, my daughter was mistreated, and tens of thousands of dollars have disappeared. I understand that you forged my signature and tried to hide the evidence.””

Her face twisted.

“You think you're innocent? You think you didn't help create this?””

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

“You gave Daniel access to everything. You let him handle the finances. You trusted him more than you trusted your own wife. And Laura knew it.””

“That doesn't excuse what you did to Maya.””

“No,” Vanessa whispered.

“It doesn't.””

For one brief moment, she looked exhausted rather than cruel.

Then the mask returned.

“You have a choice, Marcus. We can settle this privately. I'll sign whatever papers you want.

I'll agree to counseling. I'll even transfer money back into Maya's account.””

“From where?””

She didn't answer.

“Where is the money, Vanessa?””

She opened the folder again and slid a second document across the table.

“This is an account you don't know about. There is enough in it to repay the trust. More than enough.””

I studied the page.

The account belonged to an offshore holding company registered under a name that appeared nowhere in my business records.

But the beneficial owner listed beneath it was familiar.

Daniel Reed.

I looked at him.

He shook his head.

“I didn't know she had put my name on that account.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course you didn't.””

I turned back to her.

“Why are you offering me this now?””

“Because I want to end this.””

“No. You want to control how it ends.””

Her face went cold.

“Then perhaps you should know what happens if you refuse.””

She removed one final document.

It was a draft petition seeking emergency custody of Maya.

The allegations included neglect, emotional instability, and abandonment during repeated business trips.

My name appeared in bold at the top.

Below it were photographs of me boarding flights, hotel receipts, and copies of messages I'd sent Vanessa saying I was sorry I couldn't be home.

She had turned my work schedule into evidence against me.

“You've been preparing this for months,” I said.

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I've been protecting my son and myself.””

“By trying to take my daughter?””

“By making sure I have options.””

I looked at the petition.

Then I looked at the woman I'd married.

“You used my daughter's tuition to steal money. You made her work for food. You threatened the people who knew about Laura. And now you're trying to convince a court that I'm an unfit father.””

“You were never there!””

The words exploded from her.

For the first time, her voice was raw.

“You left me to manage everything. You left Laura's memory hanging over this house. You left Maya looking at me as if I could never replace the woman she lost. Every time she cried for her mother, you made me feel like a stranger.””

I stared at her.

“So you punished her?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.

“I wanted her to understand that this family had rules.””

“She is nine.””

“I know how old she is!””

Her shout echoed through the warehouse.

Then she looked away, breathing hard.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Because whatever pain she had carried, she had chosen to place it on a little girl who had done nothing except miss her mother.

I picked up the custody petition and placed it back on the table.

“This conversation is over.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“You walk out that door, and I'll make sure you lose everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Come with me if you're ready to tell the truth.””

He hesitated.

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“If you leave with him, I'll destroy you.””

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

Then he picked up his coat.

“I'm already destroyed.””

He walked toward the door.

I followed.

Vanessa didn't stop us.

But just as we reached the exit, she spoke again.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

She stood beneath the flickering light, clutching the empty trust statement.

“You want to know who was beside Laura's car?””

My heart pounded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“It wasn't Daniel.””

She took a shaky breath.

“It was someone you trusted long before either of us entered your life.””

Then she said a name.

My father's name.

I froze.

My father had been dead for eleven years.

He couldn't have stood beside Laura's car that night.

Unless Vanessa wasn't talking about my father himself.

Unless she was talking about the man who had inherited his business records, his private contacts, and the one secret my family had never discussed.

My older brother, Thomas.

The brother who had supposedly moved overseas before Laura and I were married.

May you like

The brother whose death certificate I had never personally seen.

And the brother whose name had just appeared on the account that received the missing money.
