Chapter 14: The Last Lie
The recording changed everything.
Not because it revealed a new crime by itself, but because it connected Daniel's financial scheme to the way he had manipulated Lily.
He had not simply used his daughter to strengthen his custody case.
He had counted on her silence to protect him from someone who knew what he had done.
Detective Harris couldn't release the entire recording while the investigation was active, but he explained that the speaker had been identified as a former business associate named Marcus Reed.
Marcus had worked with Daniel on several property investments and had recently cooperated with investigators reviewing Northbridge Holdings.
According to Detective Harris, Marcus had confronted Daniel about documents bearing my father's signature.
Daniel had denied responsibility.
Then he had warned Marcus to stay away from his family.
“He was threatening him?”” I asked.
“The language was ambiguous, but Marcus interpreted it as intimidation. He has agreed to provide a statement.””
“Did Marcus know about Lily?””
“He knew Daniel had a daughter. We are investigating what he meant when he said she would make sure nobody found out.””
I felt sick.
For months, Daniel had taught Lily to believe that she was responsible for keeping our family together.
He had told her that if she spoke, he might lose the house, his money, or his freedom.
He had made a six-year-old child feel responsible for protecting an adult from the consequences of his own actions.
And now I understood why he had been so desperate to destroy the tablet.
It wasn't merely evidence of an argument.
It was evidence that Lily had witnessed a financial conversation he could not afford to have exposed.
The temporary custody hearing was scheduled for Friday morning.
Ms. Collins spent the next two days preparing a timeline of the evidence.
She organized the recordings from the purple phone, the original security footage, Dr. Shaw's denial of the fabricated report, Megan's statement, the bank records, and the documents associated with Northbridge Holdings.
Each item had its own place.
No dramatic accusations.
No speculation.
Just evidence.
On Thursday evening, Megan arrived at my house carrying a small box.
“I found these in my storage closet,” she said.
Inside were copies of emails Daniel had sent her during the weeks before the incident.
One message asked her to write a letter describing me as overwhelmed and emotionally fragile.
Another instructed her to avoid mentioning the argument when speaking to the police.
A third contained a sentence that made my blood run cold.
If anyone asks, you were never told about the business arrangement.
I looked at my sister.
“Did you know about Northbridge?””
“No. I swear to you, Ava. I knew Daniel was having financial problems, but I didn't know about the company or the money.””
“Then why did you agree to help him?””
Megan's eyes filled with tears.
“He told me you were falling apart. He said Lily was frightened of you, and he was trying to protect her. I wanted to believe him because I was scared you were going to lose everything.””
“You called the police station.””
“I know.””
“You asked them to treat it as a family misunderstanding.””
She nodded.
“I thought I was preventing your marriage from becoming a public disaster. I thought if the police got involved, Lily would be taken away from both of you.””
I stared at her.
“And Daniel told you that?””
“Yes.””
She covered her face.
“I was wrong. I was so wrong.””
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
I had spent months being angry with Megan. Her call had helped Daniel create the impression that the incident was nothing more than a family dispute.
But she had finally admitted what she had done.
That didn't erase the harm.
It did mean I no longer had to guess whether she would tell the truth.
“I can't promise everything will go back to how it was,” I said.
“I know.””
“But if you're willing to tell the court exactly what happened, I'll listen.””
Megan nodded through her tears.
“I'll tell them everything.””
That night, I tucked Lily into bed.
She had been unusually quiet since Daniel's emergency filing. She knew the grown-ups were going to court, even though we hadn't told her the details.
“Mommy, will I have to live somewhere else?””
I sat beside her.
“The judge will make decisions about where you stay. But no one is asking you to fix anything. You can love both parents, and you can tell the truth.””
“What if Daddy gets angry?””
“Then the grown-ups will handle that. It isn't your job to make Daddy happy.””
She hugged her stuffed rabbit.
“Can I bring my purple phone?””
I smiled sadly.
“The phone is being kept safely with the evidence. But you can bring your rabbit wherever you're allowed to go.””
She nodded.
Then she asked, “Will Daddy be in the courtroom?””
“Yes.””
“Will he look at me?””
“I don't know, sweetheart.””
She considered that.
“I don't want to look at him.””
“Then you don't have to.””
The next morning, the courthouse was crowded with attorneys, clerks, and people waiting for hearings.
Daniel arrived wearing a dark suit and the confident expression he always wore when he thought he controlled the room.
He glanced at me, then at Ms. Collins.
“You're making a terrible mistake,” he murmured as he passed.
Ms. Collins stepped between us.
“Do not speak to my client.””
Daniel smiled faintly.
“I'm only trying to protect my daughter.””
I said nothing.
Inside the courtroom, the judge reviewed the emergency request.
Daniel's new attorney argued that the investigation had created instability and that Lily needed a parent capable of providing a predictable environment.
Ms. Collins responded with the evidence.
She showed the court that the report Daniel had relied on was not authored or signed by Dr. Shaw.
She presented the original security footage alongside the shortened clip Daniel had submitted, demonstrating that crucial moments had been omitted.
She explained that Lily's recordings raised serious concerns about coaching and intimidation.
Finally, she introduced the bank's notice that the proposed transfer involving my house had been flagged because the authorization required further verification.
Daniel's attorney objected to including the financial records in the temporary custody hearing.
The judge considered the objection before allowing limited testimony relevant to Daniel's credibility and his stated reasons for seeking control of the property.
Then Dr. Shaw took the stand.
He confirmed that he had never recommended removing Lily from my care.
He confirmed that he had not signed the report attributed to him.
And he explained that Daniel had contacted him after the incident, asking him to assess the situation.
“I did not provide a custody recommendation,” Dr. Shaw said.
“I told Mr. Hayes that any evaluation would require a formal process, interviews, and appropriate consent.””
“Did he ask you to sign a report stating that Ava Hayes was emotionally unstable?”” Ms. Collins asked.
“Yes.””
“What did you tell him?””
“That I could not provide such a conclusion without conducting a proper assessment.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
When Megan testified, she admitted that she had written a letter about my stress levels and that Daniel had asked her to make the situation sound more serious than it was.
She also admitted that her signature appeared on a longer report she had never written.
“I signed one page,” she said.
“I did not sign the report submitted to the court.””
Daniel stared straight ahead.
Rachel testified next.
She described the emails, the deleted files, and the pressure Daniel had placed on her to support his account of the incident.
She did not excuse her own behavior.
“I knew he was trying to control the story,” she said.
“I didn't understand how far he would go until I saw the original footage.””
Then the judge asked whether Daniel wished to testify.
His attorney advised him to remain silent.
For the first time since the separation, Daniel looked genuinely frightened.
The judge did not issue a final custody ruling that day. Instead, she ordered an independent review of the evidence, prohibited either parent from discussing the allegations with Lily, and denied Daniel's request for immediate exclusive custody.
Lily would remain with me under the existing temporary arrangement while the court considered the next steps.
It wasn't victory.
But it was a reprieve.
Outside the courtroom, Daniel caught up with me near the elevators.
“You've destroyed this family,” he said quietly.
I turned to face him.
“No, Daniel. I stopped protecting the lie.””
His eyes flashed.
“You have no idea what you've done.””
“Then explain it.””
He opened his mouth.
For a moment, I thought he might finally tell the truth.
Instead, he leaned closer.
“Ask Marcus what happened to the original contract.””
The elevator doors opened behind him.
His attorney called his name, and Daniel walked away without another word.
I immediately told Ms. Collins what he had said.
She contacted Detective Harris, who confirmed that investigators had been trying to locate the original contract associated with Northbridge Holdings.
The digital records suggested that the contract had been signed before my father's death, but its contents remained unknown.
If the document was genuine, it might explain why Daniel had continued using my father's name.
If it was forged, it could establish how the scheme began.
That evening, Detective Harris called.
“Marcus has agreed to meet with us tomorrow,” he said.
“He believes he can identify the original contract.””
“Why didn't he come forward earlier?””
“He says he was afraid of being implicated in the transactions.””
“Was he involved?””
“We're still determining that.””
I thanked him and hung up.
Then I went to Lily's room.
She was asleep with her rabbit tucked under her chin.
I watched her for a long time.
The court had refused to hand her over to Daniel on the strength of his accusations.
The fabricated report had been exposed.
The financial investigation was moving forward.
But the truth about my father's signature remained unfinished.
And until we found the original contract, Daniel could still claim that the entire arrangement had been authorized before my father died.
The next morning, Marcus Reed arrived at the police station carrying a sealed envelope.
Inside was a copy of the original Northbridge agreement.
Detective Harris called me after examining it.
“Ava,” he said, “your father never signed this contract.””
I gripped the phone.
“How can you be certain?””
“Because the document contains a clause that only someone with access to your private family records could have added.””
“What clause?””
There was a pause.
“Your father named you as the sole beneficiary of the arrangement. But the contract includes a second beneficiary who was never mentioned in the estate documents.””
My pulse quickened.
“Who?””
May you like
Detective Harris lowered his voice.
“Daniel Hayes.””
