Chapter 4: The Man Who Never Disappeared
Claire’s phone kept vibrating in her hand.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The name on the screen glowed brighter with every second.
Marcus Reed.
I watched her stare at it like it was a ghost.
Not like it was a stranger.
Not like it was someone from her past.
Like it was someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.
“Answer it,” I said.
Claire looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“Answer it.””
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.””
A bitter laugh escaped from me.
“After everything tonight, you’re worried about what’s a good idea?””
She looked down.
The phone stopped ringing.
For a moment, there was silence.
Then it started again.
This time, I could see her shaking.
“Maya’s in the hospital,” I said.
“A man who might be her biological father just requested a DNA test behind my back. He knows something about the night she was born.””
I stepped closer.
“And you’re afraid to answer?””
Claire swallowed.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
I expected another excuse.
Another lie.
But she admitted it.
And somehow, that hurt more.
“Why?””
She looked toward Maya, who was resting on the examination bed while Nurse Nia checked her vitals.
Then she whispered:
“Because I don’t know what he’s going to say.””
My jaw tightened.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You know exactly what he’s going to say.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She looked at the phone.
Then at me.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stared at her.
“Protect me?””
Her voice cracked.
“Yes.””
“From the truth?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire, you didn’t protect me. You built a life where I was the only person who didn’t know what was happening.””
“That’s not fair.””
The words came out suddenly.
Sharp.
Defensive.
For the first time that night, I saw anger in her eyes.
“Not fair?””
She stepped closer.
“You think I didn’t suffer?””
I blinked.
“What?””
“You think I didn’t wake up every day knowing there was something I couldn’t tell you?””
“Because you were guilty.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was terrified.””
The hospital room went quiet.
Even Maya looked over.
Claire immediately softened.
“Sweetheart, close your eyes and rest, okay?””
Maya didn’t move.
She was watching both of us.
Watching the two people she trusted fall apart.
I lowered my voice.
“Not here.””
Claire nodded.
We stepped a few feet away.
Still close enough to see Maya.
Still close enough to remember why this mattered.
“Tell me about Marcus.””
Claire looked down.
“I met him when I was in college.””
“Before we met.””
“Yes.””
“You loved him?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation felt like another wound.
“I thought I did.””
I looked away.
“Keep going.””
“Marcus was charming. He was exciting. He made me feel like I could be anyone.””
“And then?””
She swallowed.
“Then I found out he wasn’t who I thought he was.””
“What does that mean?””
“He lied.””
“About what?””
Her eyes moved toward Maya.
“About everything.””
I waited.
She took a breath.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I tried to contact him.””
“And?””
“He disappeared.””
I frowned.
“You said he moved away.””
“He did.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Her voice became smaller.
“He left because he didn’t want responsibility.””
I looked at her.
“And then you met me.””
Claire nodded.
“You were different.””
“How convenient.””
She flinched.
“I know how it sounds.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she said something I didn’t expect.
“I loved you.””
Past tense.
I noticed.
She noticed me noticing.
“I love you,” she corrected quickly.
But it was too late.
The first version had already landed.
Before I could respond, Maya spoke.
“Daddy?””
I turned around.
She was sitting up.
“What’s wrong?””
Her eyes moved between us.
I walked back to her.
“Nothing.””
She looked at me.
Children always knew when adults were lying.
“Are you leaving?””
My heart cracked.
“No.””
“Because of the test?””
I sat beside her.
“No.””
“But if he’s my real dad…”
I interrupted immediately.
“Listen to me.””
She looked at me.
“Being your dad isn’t something a test decides.””
Her eyes filled.
“But what if it says he is?””
I held her hand.
“Then it says something about biology.””
I swallowed.
“But it doesn’t erase every bedtime story. Every morning you woke me up. Every time you called me when you were scared.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“You’re still my dad?””
“Yes.””
No hesitation.
No doubt.
“Yes.””
Behind me, Claire quietly cried.
But I couldn’t focus on her.
Not yet.
A few minutes later, Nurse Nia returned.
“Maya, your results are coming back. The doctor wants to monitor you overnight.””
Maya nodded.
Then looked at her backpack.
“Dad?””
“What?””
“The recorder.””
I looked at the small device on the counter.
“What about it?””
“There’s another recording.””
My entire body went still.
Claire stopped breathing.
“What?””
Maya looked at her mother.
“Mom thought I only recorded one.””
Claire whispered:
“Maya…”
“You were talking to him again.””
I stood up.
“Him?””
Maya nodded.
“Marcus.””
The room changed.
Not again.
Another secret.
Another piece missing.
“Where is the recording?”” I asked.
Maya pointed toward the backpack.
“On the recorder.””
I picked it up.
Claire stepped forward.
“No.””
I turned.
“Why?””
Her face was filled with panic.
“Because you don’t know what’s on it.””
“That’s the point.””
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
My voice was calm now.
Almost too calm.
“You don’t get to decide what I know anymore.””
Claire looked destroyed.
But she didn’t stop me.
I pressed the button.
A second file appeared.
REC 02.
I played it.
Static.
Then a man’s voice.
A voice I had never heard before.
Marcus.
“I know you’re scared, Claire.””
Claire covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“But you can’t keep pretending Daniel doesn’t deserve the truth.””
I looked at my wife.
She looked like she was about to collapse.
Marcus’s voice continued.
“Eight years ago, you made a choice.””
My chest tightened.
“Not just about Maya.””
A pause.
Then:
“About what happened at the hospital the night she was born.””
Claire whispered:
“Stop.””
But the recording continued.
“I tried to tell Daniel before.””
I froze.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
The recording played.
“You blocked my number.””
A shaky breath.
“Then you moved.””
Marcus’s voice became colder.
“You can hide from me, Claire.””
“But you can’t hide from the truth forever.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
I turned slowly.
“Did he try to contact me?””
Claire looked away.
“Daniel…”
“Did he?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer was barely audible.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“How many?””
She didn’t answer.
“How many times?””
“Three.””
I stared at her.
Three times.
A man claiming to be Maya’s father had tried to reach me.
And my wife had made sure I never knew.
“Where are those messages?””
Claire’s face went pale.
I knew that look.
I knew it before she spoke.
“There’s something you need to understand.””
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“Marcus didn’t just disappear after Maya was born.””
I waited.
“He came back.””
“When?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“Last month.””
My heart stopped.
“Last month?””
She nodded.
“And he said he had proof.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“What proof?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Because her phone started ringing again.
Marcus Reed.
This time, she didn’t ignore it.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
Even from a distance, I could hear the seriousness in his tone.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“Where is Daniel?””
Nobody moved.
Then Marcus said the sentence that made my blood run cold.
“Because if he’s with Maya right now, he needs to hear the truth before you tell him another lie.””
Claire’s face went white.
And then Marcus added:
“The night Maya was born wasn’t just the night you hid her father from him.””
May you like
A pause.
“It was the night you saved her life.””
