Chapter 8: The Brother Nobody Knew Existed

Nobody spoke.

Not the judge.

Not the jury.

Not Marcus Reed.

Not even Daniel Vale.

The word Maya had just said seemed impossible.

“My brother.””

Cole stared at her.

A thousand questions crossed his face at once.

“What brother?””

Maya looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

The answer was somehow worse.

Because a child didn’t invent a memory like that.

Not with that much fear.

Not with that much certainty.

Daniel Vale’s expression had changed completely.

The calm confidence was gone.

For the first time, he looked like a man who had lost control of a situation.

The judge noticed.

“Mr. Vale.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

The judge’s voice sharpened.

“I asked you to identify yourself.””

Daniel slowly looked away from Maya.

“My apologies, Your Honor.””

The judge studied him.

“You seem surprised by this child’s statement.””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Children remember strange things.””

Maya immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel looked annoyed.

Maya stepped closer to Cole.

“I remember him.””

“Who?””

“My brother.””

Cole lowered himself beside her.

“Maya, did you have a brother?””

She looked down.

“I think so.””

“You think?””

She pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“It’s blurry.””

Cole softened his voice.

“That’s okay.””

“No.””

Maya shook her head.

“My mom told me not to forget.””

The courtroom became quiet.

“What did she tell you?””

Maya closed her eyes.

“She said…”

Her voice became smaller.

“If anything happens, remember the second heart.””

Cole looked toward Daniel.

Daniel’s face had gone still.

Too still.

That scared Cole more than anger would have.

The judge looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The judge turned toward Reed.

“Mr. Reed?””

Reed looked exhausted.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed him.

Not anymore.

The man who had spent years controlling the narrative now looked like someone watching his entire world collapse.

Cole stepped toward him.

“You know.””

Reed looked at him.

“Yes.””

The admission stunned everyone.

Cole narrowed his eyes.

“Then tell us.””

Reed looked at Daniel.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

A warning.

A threat.

Something passed between them.

Cole saw it.

The fear.

The history.

“You worked together.””

Reed looked away.

The judge stood.

“Is that true?””

Silence.

“Mr. Reed.””

Finally, Reed spoke.

“Yes.””

The courtroom erupted.

The judge struck the gavel.

“Order!””

But it was impossible to restore order now.

Because the prosecutor had just admitted he had a connection to the man standing at the door.

The man who had appeared after evidence disappeared.

The man Maya feared.

The judge pointed toward Reed.

“You will explain.””

Reed sat down slowly.

“Seven years ago, I worked for Daniel Vale.””

Cole stared.

“You worked for him?””

“Yes.””

“As an attorney?””

Reed nodded.

“But not in court.””

The judge frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Reed looked at Daniel.

“It means Daniel Vale didn’t want lawyers.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Careful, Marcus.””

Reed ignored him.

“He wanted people who could make problems disappear.””

The courtroom became silent.

Maya moved closer to Cole.

“Mom knew.””

Reed looked at her.

“Yes.””

“She knew about him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell everyone?””

Reed’s face changed.

“Because she tried.””

The judge leaned forward.

“And?””

Reed looked at Daniel.

“And nobody listened.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“This is becoming dramatic.””

Cole turned.

“You threatened a woman and a child.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I protected my family.””

Maya froze.

Cole noticed.

“Family?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

Maya’s face changed.

Like a memory was opening.

“You know my brother.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Cole felt a chill.

“Who is he?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

“On what you remember.””

The answer made Cole angry.

“You don’t get to play games with her.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Maya, your mother lied to you.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

“She told you everyone was trying to hurt you.””

“She told me the truth.””

Daniel smiled.

“Did she tell you who your brother was?””

Maya stopped.

Cole noticed.

“Maya?””

Her eyes moved.

A memory.

A room.

A voice.

A hand holding hers.

“He was older.””

The courtroom went silent.

“How much older?”” the judge asked.

Maya frowned.

“I don’t know.””

“Do you remember his name?””

She closed her eyes.

Nothing.

Then suddenly—

“Eli.””

The room froze.

Daniel’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But it was enough.

Cole saw it.

“Eli?””

Maya nodded slowly.

“My brother was Eli.””

Daniel looked away.

The judge immediately noticed.

“Mr. Vale.””

No response.

“Do you know an Eli?””

Daniel’s silence answered.

The judge turned toward Reed.

“Do you?””

Reed looked sick.

“Yes.””

The courtroom erupted again.

Cole stared.

“Who is Eli?””

Reed didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“He’s dead.””

Maya’s face changed.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

“No!””

The force of her voice shocked everyone.

Cole held her shoulders.

“Maya.””

She shook her head.

“My brother wasn’t dead.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“He was.””

Maya looked terrified.

“He told me he would come back.””

The room went quiet.

“Who?””

“Eli.””

“What did he look like?””

Maya looked down.

“He had a scar.””

Cole froze.

“Where?””

“Here.””

She touched the left side of her cheek.

The same place as Cole’s scar.

Everyone looked at Cole.

A strange realization moved through the courtroom.

Maya had always stared at his scar.

Not because it reminded her of a stranger.

Because it reminded her of someone else.

Cole whispered:

“Eli had the same scar?””

Maya nodded.

“My mom said it was because he saved me.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Maya looked at him.

“She said my brother saved me.””

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

The judge watched carefully.

“Mr. Vale, explain.””

Daniel said nothing.

Reed slowly stood.

“Your Honor…”

Everyone turned.

Reed looked at Daniel.

“He knows.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Marcus.””

Reed continued.

“The truth about Eli.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“Stop.””

But Reed didn’t.

“He wasn’t dead.””

Maya gasped.

Cole looked shocked.

The judge leaned forward.

“Then where is he?””

Reed looked at Maya.

“He disappeared.””

“Why?””

Reed’s voice became quieter.

“Because Daniel Vale tried to erase him.””

Daniel moved forward.

The bailiff immediately stepped in.

“Stay where you are.””

Daniel stopped.

But his eyes were on Reed.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Reed looked exhausted.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

The judge looked at him.

“Continue.””

Reed swallowed.

“Eli was the only person who knew what happened that night.””

Cole frowned.

“The crash.””

“Yes.””

“What did he know?””

Reed looked at Maya.

“He knew who was driving.””

The courtroom went silent.

Maya whispered:

“Dad.””

Reed nodded.

“Yes.””

Cole felt his stomach drop.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“You don’t understand.””

But Maya did.

She looked at him.

“You were driving.””

Daniel’s face went blank.

The judge stood.

“Is that true?””

Daniel laughed softly.

A strange, empty laugh.

Then he looked at Cole.

“You really thought you were the victim.””

Cole stared.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“You were never supposed to survive.””

The courtroom froze.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Your brother ruined everything.””

Maya stepped back.

“What did he do?””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“He saved you.””

A pause.

“And that’s why I had to take him away.””

Cole moved toward Daniel.

The bailiff stopped him.

“You killed him?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

But his silence was enough.

Maya started crying.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You want the truth?””

He reached into his coat.

The bailiff immediately reacted.

“Hands where I can see them.””

Daniel slowly pulled out something small.

Not a weapon.

A photograph.

He held it up.

An old photograph.

Of a teenage boy.

A boy standing beside Maya’s mother.

A boy with a familiar scar.

Cole stared.

Because he knew that face.

Not from memory.

From somewhere else.

The same face that had appeared in the evidence photo.

The same eyes.

The same scar.

Daniel looked at him.

“You know him.””

Cole couldn’t speak.

Because he did.

The impossible truth was standing in front of him.

The boy Maya called her brother…

Was not a stranger.

He was the reason Cole had survived the crash.

Daniel lowered the photograph.

“Tell them, Cole.””

Cole looked up.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“Tell them who Eli really was.””

The courtroom waited.

May you like

And Cole whispered the answer that changed everything:

“He was my son.””
