Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Daniel stared at the document as though the paper itself had betrayed him.

At the bottom of the final page was his name, written in the familiar black ink of an electronic signature. Above it, in bold letters, were the words *PERSONAL GUARANTEE AND TRANSFER OF CONTROLLING INTEREST*.

I didn't understand every line of legal language, but I understood enough to know that something was terribly wrong.

"Daniel," I whispered, "what exactly is this?""

He flipped through the pages, his hands trembling.

"It's an agreement to transfer sixty percent of my ownership in the company to Westbridge Consulting. There's also a personal guarantee covering outstanding debts.""

"Can you do that without knowing about it?""

"No."" He swallowed.

"Not legally. Not without my consent.""

He pulled out his phone and photographed every page.

"Someone has copied my signature.""

"Then we take this to the police.""

"Not yet, Mom.""

He sounded so much like his father when he was trying to solve a problem before anyone could see how frightened he was.

"Marcus said there are things in this building I haven't found. If he's telling the truth about even part of this, I need to know how far it goes.""

I looked at the document again.

The agreement was dated six weeks earlier.

Six weeks ago, Vanessa had taken me shopping for my birthday. She had insisted on buying me lunch afterward and spent the entire afternoon asking about my will, my savings, and whether I had ever considered selling my little house.

At the time, I thought she was trying to be thoughtful.

Now, those memories made my stomach twist.

"Daniel, did Vanessa ever ask you to sign anything recently?""

He frowned.

"She brought home some paperwork a few months ago. She said it was for our mortgage and insurance. I was working late, so she told me she'd organize everything.""

"Did you sign it?""

"I signed two forms on my tablet. One was definitely for insurance. The other..."" He closed his eyes.

"I don't remember reading the second one.""

A cold silence settled over the room.

"Could that have been it?"" I asked.

"Maybe. But this agreement has a witness section and a notary acknowledgment. If the signatures are forged, someone went to a lot of trouble.""

He stood and walked to the window overlooking the parking lot.

"I trusted Marcus with my company. I trusted Vanessa with my life. I gave both of them access to things no one else had.""

I rose and joined him.

"Trusting someone doesn't make you responsible for their choices.""

He gave a humorless laugh.

"Tell that to the bank when they discover someone has been moving money out of my business.""

Before I could answer, a sharp knock sounded at the conference-room door.

Daniel turned.

A young woman stood in the hallway, holding a tablet against her chest. I recognized her from the reception desk.

Her name was Sophie Miller, the company's office manager. She had worked for Daniel for nearly four years and had always treated me with kindness whenever I visited.

"Sorry to interrupt," Sophie said.

"Daniel, there's someone asking for you.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"Vanessa.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Tell her I'm busy.""

"I tried. She says it's urgent. She also says she needs the original copy of the transfer agreement.""

My son and I exchanged a look.

Sophie lowered her voice.

"She seemed upset. And, Daniel, she came in through the side entrance. She didn't want anyone at reception to see her.""

Daniel placed the document inside the folder.

"Did she say why she needs it?""

"No. But she asked whether Marcus was here.""

He looked at me.

The words from the phone call returned to my mind.

Once Daniel signs the final papers, everything will be ours.

Daniel straightened his jacket.

"Let her in.""

Sophie nodded and disappeared.

A moment later, Vanessa entered the conference room.

She wore a tailored navy coat, cream heels, and the small gold earrings Daniel had given her on their third wedding anniversary. Her hair was pulled into a smooth bun.

She looked perfectly composed.

Until she saw the folder on the table.

Then her gaze flicked to Daniel's face.

"Why do you have that?""

Daniel folded his arms.

"Good morning to you, too.""

Vanessa shut the door behind her.

"Daniel, we need to talk privately.""

"Anything you need to say can be said in front of my mother.""

Her lips tightened.

"This is a business matter.""

"Then why are you here asking for a document from my office?""

She looked at me with open irritation.

"Must you be involved in everything?""

I felt an old instinct to apologize rise in my throat.

I swallowed it.

"I'm involved because someone has been kissing your husband's business partner while apparently moving money out of his company.""

Vanessa's face flushed.

"How dare you?""

"Answer the question," Daniel said.

She turned toward him, and the tears appeared almost instantly.

"Marcus called me last night. He told me you were making accusations and that you were looking through private company records.""

"Those records belong to my company.""

"He said you were threatening him.""

"I asked him why he was kissing my wife.""

Vanessa's expression broke into wounded disbelief.

"I told you that was a mistake.""

"Was stealing from me also a mistake?""

The room went silent.

For the first time since she had entered, Vanessa looked genuinely confused.

Then her eyes dropped to the folder.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel opened it and pushed the transfer agreement toward her.

"Explain this.""

She stared at the page.

I watched her face carefully.

First came recognition.

Then calculation.

Finally, she looked up with an expression of practiced indignation.

"I have no idea what that is.""

"Your name is on the authorization records.""

"I never authorized anything.""

"You registered Westbridge Consulting using your mailing address.""

Vanessa's mouth opened slightly.

Daniel leaned forward.

"And someone forged my signature on a document transferring sixty percent of my company.""

She took a step backward.

"I don't know anything about that.""

"Then why did you come here asking for the original agreement?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because Marcus told me you had found something that could destroy us!""

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Daniel went very still.

"Destroy us?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

For a moment, she looked less like a woman caught in a lie and more like a frightened child who had accidentally revealed a secret.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"What have you and Marcus been planning?""

"Nothing.""

"Vanessa.""

"I said nothing!""

She grabbed her handbag.

Then, as she turned toward the door, her phone slipped from her hand and struck the floor.

The screen lit up.

A message appeared.

*MARCUS: Get the original before Daniel discovers what happened to the first one.*

Daniel bent down and picked up the phone.

Vanessa lunged toward him.

"Give it back!""

He held it away from her.

"What happened to the first one?""

She snatched at the phone again, but Daniel stepped back.

"Tell me!""

Her composure shattered.

"You don't understand what you're dealing with!""

"Then explain it!""

Vanessa's chest rose and fell rapidly. She looked at the door, then at the folder, then at me.

Finally, she whispered, "If you keep digging, you'll lose everything.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Is that a threat?""

"No."" Her voice trembled.

"It's a warning.""

She reached for the phone.

This time, Daniel let her take it.

Vanessa backed toward the door.

"You should have left this alone," she said.

Then she hurried out.

Daniel stood motionless for several seconds.

I crossed the room and put my hand on his shoulder.

"She knows something.""

He nodded slowly.

"And whatever it is, she's more afraid of us discovering it than she is of being caught cheating.""

He looked down at the transfer agreement.

Then he turned the final page over.

There, written in tiny print beneath the notary acknowledgment, was a reference number and the name of a law firm.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

His expression changed.

"Mom, this isn't just a company document.""

"What is it?""

He pointed to the law firm's name.

"They handled Dad's estate.""

My breath caught.

"Your father's estate was settled years ago.""

"I know.""

He stared at the page.

"Then why is a document transferring my company connected to the lawyer who handled Dad's inheritance?""

Before I could answer, Sophie's voice came through the partly open door.

"Daniel? I'm sorry, but there's another problem.""

He turned.

She stood in the hallway, pale and visibly shaken.

"Someone just called from the bank," she said.

"They've frozen the company's main operating account.""

Daniel's face drained of color.

"On whose authority?""

Sophie looked down at her tablet.

May you like

Then she whispered the words that made my son's knees almost buckle.

"They say you personally requested the freeze yesterday afternoon.""
