Chapter 4: Before Marcus Was Born

Marcus read the message again.

*Ask Denise what happened before Marcus was born.*

The words glowed on David's phone, sharp and unmistakable beneath the bright afternoon sunlight.

Marcus lifted his eyes.

“I'm asking you now,” he said.

“What happened before I was born?””

Denise stood beside the dining table, her burgundy blouse perfectly arranged, her gold bracelets resting against her wrist. She looked like the same woman who had welcomed guests into the house with a practiced smile, who had reminded Marcus to clean his shoes before entering, who had told neighbors how proud she was of the hardworking young man she helped raise.

But her face had changed.

“Marcus, this isn't the way I wanted you to find out.””

David set his phone on the table.

“Then tell us the right way.””

Denise glanced at him.

“David, please. We should talk privately.””

“No.”” Marcus pulled out a chair but didn't sit.

“You've been taking money from me for eight months. You've been telling me I'm irresponsible while sending six hundred dollars a month to a man Dad says you promised never to contact. Now he's telling us to ask what happened before I was born. Nobody is leaving this room until somebody answers me.””

Denise's fingers tightened around the back of the chair.

“You're making this sound worse than it is.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“How could I possibly make it sound worse?””

David stepped closer to his wife.

“Who is Derrick Cole?””

Denise stared at the floor.

“He was someone I knew a long time ago.””

“How long?””

“Before you and I got married.””

David's expression remained steady, but his jaw flexed.

“And what does he have to do with Marcus?””

She looked toward her stepson.

“Nothing that should change how you see your family.””

“That's not an answer,” Marcus said.

Denise drew a shaky breath.

“When your father and I first got together, there were things about my past I hadn't told him.””

David folded his arms.

“Things about Derrick?””

“Yes.””

“Things about Marcus?””

Denise didn't respond.

The silence stretched.

Marcus felt his pulse beating in his throat.

“Was Derrick involved in my life before I was born?””

Denise closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The single word seemed to drain the air from the room.

Marcus gripped the chair.

“How?””

“I can't explain everything at once.””

“You've had twenty years!””

Denise recoiled at the shout.

David raised his hand, not to silence Marcus, but to steady the conversation.

“Let her finish.””

Marcus turned toward his father.

“You knew something was wrong, didn't you?””

“I knew Derrick's name,” David answered.

“I didn't know why he was receiving money.””

“But you knew him.””

David hesitated.

“I met him once, years ago.””

Denise shook her head.

“You promised me we wouldn't reopen this.””

David looked at her with disbelief.

“I promised you I'd give our marriage a chance. That isn't the same as promising to ignore whatever you've been doing behind my back.””

He took the bank statement from his pocket and placed it on the table.

“Eight months of transfers. Six hundred dollars each. That's forty-eight hundred dollars, Marcus. Your son worked himself sick while you sent his money to a man from your past.””

Denise's face crumpled.

“I was going to pay it back.””

“With what?”” Marcus asked.

“Another rent increase?””

She looked at him, wounded.

“You think I wanted to hurt you?””

“I think you wanted the money more than you cared about what it cost me.””

For several seconds, Denise said nothing.

Then she pulled out the chair and sat down.

“When I was younger,” she began, “I made a decision that changed everything. Derrick was part of it. When I met David, I wanted to leave that part of my life behind.””

David's voice was quiet.

“You told me it was over.””

“It was.””

“Then why did you start sending him money?””

Denise rubbed her palms against her skirt.

“Because he came back into my life.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That still doesn't explain anything.””

“He told me he needed help.””

“And you used my rent money?””

“I thought I could manage it.””

“Why didn't you ask Dad?””

“Because he would have said no.””

The honesty of that answer silenced the room.

David stared at her.

“So you knew it was wrong.””

Denise's eyes filled with tears.

“I knew you wouldn't understand.””

“That's not the same thing.””

She looked toward the hallway.

“I thought if I sent Derrick enough money, he'd stop asking questions.””

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

“What questions?””

Denise pressed her lips together.

“Questions about the past.””

“What past?””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

Marcus pushed the chair away from the table.

“Then you don't get to ask me for another dollar. Not one.””

Denise stood abruptly.

“Marcus, don't be cruel. You have no idea what I've sacrificed for this family.””

He looked at the gold earrings beside the bank statement.

“You've been collecting money from me while telling me to grow up. I've been working two jobs so I can afford college. You watched me count change for lunch, Denise.””

Her eyes darted toward the jewelry box.

“I never wanted you to struggle.””

“Then why did you make me?””

David stepped between them.

“Enough. The money is one problem. The truth is another. We're dealing with both.””

He took his phone and opened the message thread with Derrick.

“I'm calling him again.””

Denise grabbed his sleeve.

“David, don't.””

He looked down at her hand.

“Let go.””

She released him.

David dialed.

This time, the call connected.

Derrick answered immediately.

“You read the message,” he said.

“Yes,” David replied.

“Now tell me what happened before Marcus was born.””

There was a long pause.

Then Derrick spoke.

“Denise knows exactly what happened. She's been trying to keep you from finding out for twenty years.””

Marcus moved closer to the phone.

“I'm here. Tell me yourself.””

Derrick exhaled.

“Marcus, there's something about your birth that your stepmother has never told you.””

Marcus stared at Denise.

She stood completely still.

“What is it?”” he asked.

Derrick began to answer.

“Your mother—”

Denise snatched the phone from David's hand.

“DON'T YOU DARE!””

Her scream echoed through the bright living room.

David immediately took the phone back.

But Derrick had already hung up.

Marcus looked at Denise, his heart pounding.

“My mother?””

Denise covered her mouth.

May you like

And for the first time, Marcus realized that the secret might not concern the man who had been receiving his money.

It might concern the woman who had raised him.
