Chapter 9: The Woman Who Came Back
Maya ran toward the entrance.
“Mom!””
The woman outside raised both hands.
“Don't open the door!””
Maya stopped.
Alana pressed her palm against the glass.
Tears streamed down her face.
Maya stared at her.
Twenty-two years of questions collapsed into one impossible moment.
“You're really her.””
Alana nodded.
“My baby.””
Maya covered her mouth.
“I’m not a baby.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know.””
Victor hurried toward Maya.
“Stay back from the doors.””
Maya turned on him.
“You knew she was coming.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she was my mother.””
Victor looked down.
“Yes.””
Maya shook her head.
“How could you keep this from me?””
“Because Raymond controlled everything.””
“Not everything.””
Victor looked at the locked doors.
“He controls this building.””
A voice came over the restaurant speakers.
“Victor.””
Raymond.
“Step away from Maya.””
Victor didn't move.
Raymond continued.
“You've already broken one promise tonight.””
Maya looked around.
“Where is he?””
No answer.
Then the chandelier lights came on brighter.
Raymond stood on the restaurant's upper balcony.
He was dressed in a charcoal suit.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
No weapon visible.
He looked like an ordinary wealthy businessman.
Except for the smile.
Maya stared at him.
“You're Raymond.””
He smiled.
“You have your mother's eyes.””
Alana pounded on the glass.
“Don't listen to him!””
Raymond looked toward her.
“You always were dramatic, Alana.””
Maya stepped forward.
“You changed my records.””
“Yes.””
“You made everyone think my mother abandoned me.””
“I didn't make everyone think anything.””
“You threatened them.””
Raymond's smile faded.
“I gave them choices.””
Maya's voice shook.
“You destroyed my family.””
“No.””
He pointed toward Evelyn.
“Your family destroyed itself.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Leave her alone.””
Raymond looked at her.
“You should have burned the photograph.””
Evelyn's face hardened.
“I should have protected my daughter.””
“You had twenty-two years.””
“I was afraid.””
Raymond smiled.
“Fear kept you alive.””
Maya looked at him.
“What do you want from me?””
Raymond's eyes settled on her wrist.
“That scar.””
Maya instinctively covered it.
Raymond pointed.
“Your mother gave you that mark.””
Maya looked toward Alana.
“Why?””
Alana shook her head.
“Because I needed to recognize you.””
Raymond laughed softly.
“She doesn't know everything.””
Alana shouted through the glass.
“Don't believe him!””
Raymond walked down the stairs.
Maya watched him approach.
Victor stepped in front of her.
Raymond stopped.
“Move.””
“No.””
Raymond looked at Victor.
“You've disappointed me.””
Victor's voice was steady.
“I stopped working for you twenty-two years ago.””
Raymond smiled.
“You never stopped.””
“I did.””
“You kept my books.””
“To protect Alana.””
“You hid my property.””
“To protect Maya.””
Raymond's expression hardened.
“You stole from me.””
Victor shook his head.
“I stole nothing.””
Raymond looked toward the hidden room.
“You took the evidence.””
Maya's eyes widened.
“What evidence?””
Victor didn't answer.
Raymond smiled.
“Ask him.””
Maya turned.
“What evidence?””
Victor's eyes filled with tears.
“The records your mother found.””
“About the money?””
“No.””
Maya waited.
Victor finally said, “About the children.””
Silence.
Maya stared.
“What children?””
Raymond’s face changed.
Victor continued.
“Raymond wasn't just stealing money.””
Alana pressed her hand against the glass.
“He was selling identities.””
Maya looked at her.
“What?””
Alana nodded.
“Children from poor families. Children whose parents couldn't protect them.””
Maya felt sick.
“Selling them to who?””
“People who wanted new identities.””
Raymond shook his head.
“That's a lie.””
Victor stepped forward.
“I saw the files.””
Raymond's voice became dangerous.
“You saw what I allowed you to see.””
“And Alana found the originals.””
Raymond looked toward Alana.
“You should have left this alone.””
“I couldn't.””
“You could have.””
“I had a daughter.””
Raymond stared at Maya.
“That was your mistake.””
Maya's breathing became shallow.
“What did you do to my mother?””
Raymond smiled.
“Nothing.””
Maya stepped closer.
“Then why did she disappear?””
Raymond looked toward the entrance.
“Ask her.””
Maya turned to Alana.
Alana's eyes were full of tears.
“I ran.””
“Why?””
“Because Raymond told me he would take you.””
Maya's face crumpled.
“I would have gone with you.””
“I couldn't risk it.””
“You left me.””
“I left you with people I thought would keep you safe.””
“Grandma?””
“Yes.””
Maya looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn cried silently.
Alana continued.
“I sent letters.””
“I never received them.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because Raymond intercepted them.””
Raymond's expression didn't change.
Maya stared at him.
“You stole twenty-two years from me.””
“No.””
Raymond shook his head.
“I gave you twenty-two years.””
Maya frowned.
“You don't understand.””
Raymond reached inside his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept something.””
Victor whispered, “Don't.””
Raymond ignored him.
He held the envelope toward Maya.
“Your mother's final letter.””
Maya stared.
“Final?””
Alana suddenly screamed.
“NO!””
Raymond smiled.
“She never told you what happened the night you were born.””
Maya's heart pounded.
“What happened?””
Raymond opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
He held it up.
“Your mother didn't discover those records because she was investigating me.””
Maya stared.
“Then why?””
Raymond looked directly into her eyes.
“Because she discovered something about you.””
Maya felt the room go silent.
“What?””
Raymond slowly unfolded the paper.
“You were never supposed to be my daughter.””
Alana closed her eyes.
Victor whispered, “Raymond…”
Raymond smiled.
“And that's why your mother had to run.””
Maya looked at Alana.
“Mom?””
Alana's face collapsed.
“Maya…”
“What is he talking about?””
Alana pressed both hands against the glass.
“Please.””
“Tell me.””
“I wanted to.””
“Then tell me now.””
Alana looked at Victor.
Then Evelyn.
Then Raymond.
Finally, she looked directly at Maya.
“I lied to you.””
Maya's voice trembled.
“About what?””
Alana whispered through the glass.
“About who your father is.””
Behind Maya, Victor suddenly dropped to his knees.

And Raymond said quietly:
“Now ask her who signed your original birth certificate.””
