The Scar They Laughed At / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Name

The second message changed everything.

*Ask your father who he was protecting.*

I stared at the words until they blurred.

Because the truth I had spent years searching for had just become another question.

A different kind of betrayal.

A deeper one.

The ballroom was no longer a celebration.

It was a courtroom.

And my father was standing in the middle of it.

Robert Reed looked around at the faces watching him.

The officers.

The guests.

His own daughters.

For the first time in my life, I saw him without the armor.

No perfect posture.

No commanding voice.

No polished public image.

Just a man who had been caught between the person he wanted everyone to believe he was and the person he actually became.

“Maya,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Who were you protecting?””

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

That silence answered more than words.

Celeste stepped forward.

“Dad.””

Her voice was different now.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Who?””

My father closed his eyes.

“I can explain.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone always wanted to explain after the damage was done.

“Then explain.””

My voice echoed through the ballroom.

“Explain why you let me believe I abandoned my family.””

He looked at me.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“You were protecting yourself.””

His face tightened.

“That’s not fair.””

I stared at him.

“Fair?””

I touched my shoulder.

The scar beneath the torn blouse.

“Was it fair when I was lying in a hospital bed alone?””

His eyes lowered.

“Was it fair when I came home and you acted like I was a problem you needed to hide?””

He said nothing.

“Was it fair when my own sister believed I ran away because that’s what you told her?””

Celeste looked down.

That hurt her too.

Because she knew.

She had spent years holding anger that belonged somewhere else.

Naomi stepped closer.

“Robert.””

My father looked at her.

“Tell them the truth.””

His expression hardened slightly.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

Naomi’s face remained calm.

“I understand more than you think.””

The room became tense.

My father looked toward the exit.

For one second, I thought he might leave.

Run.

Protect the image one more time.

But then he saw all of us watching.

And maybe he realized there was nowhere left to go.

He took a slow breath.

“Eight years ago, I received a report.””

Nobody moved.

“A report about a possible security leak.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What report?””

My father looked at him.

“The same one that disappeared.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You never told us.””

“I couldn’t.””

“You could.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“You chose not to.””

My father looked away.

“There were people involved who had power.””

I felt a chill.

“People?””

My father nodded.

“People above me.””

Naomi’s eyes narrowed.

“Names.””

My father hesitated.

That hesitation was familiar.

It was the same hesitation from years ago.

The moment before he chose something else over me.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Who?””

Finally, he whispered:

“General Marcus Vale.””

The name meant nothing to most people in the room.

But Daniel reacted immediately.

His face changed.

“No.””

Naomi turned toward him.

“You know him?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I know exactly who he is.””

The air changed.

“Who?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“The man who commanded the operation review after the attack.””

My stomach tightened.

“The review that cleared everyone?””

“Yes.””

Naomi’s expression became darker.

“The review that said the attack was unavoidable.””

Daniel nodded.

“But it wasn’t.””

My father looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You don’t get to do this anymore.””

His voice shook with anger.

“Not after eight years.””

I had never seen him like that.

Not even during the worst moments of the mission.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“You remember the explosion.””

I nodded slowly.

“The building collapse.””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“But that wasn’t the beginning.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel looked at Robert.

“The mission changed before we arrived.””

My father looked down.

“Because of Vale.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

My father finally spoke.

“I was ordered not to interfere.””

I stared at him.

“And you listened?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I laughed quietly.

“You thought?””

“Maya…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say my name like that.””

He stopped.

“I almost died.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became louder.

“You know facts. Reports. Documents.””

I pointed at my chest.

“But you don’t know what it felt like.””

My eyes filled.

“You don’t know what it felt like when I realized the people who were supposed to protect me didn’t.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even my father.

Because he knew.

He had no defense.

Then Celeste suddenly whispered:

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She was staring at Daniel.

“You said the mission details were changed.””

“Yes.””

“And my father knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“Part of it.””

She looked confused.

“Then why did he tell me Maya left?””

The question hung there.

My father looked at her.

“Because I needed you to stay quiet.””

Celeste’s face went pale.

“You used me?””

His silence answered.

The pain on her face was immediate.

For years, she had believed she was the favored child.

The chosen one.

The daughter who stayed.

Now she realized she had also been a piece on his board.

“You let me hate her.””

My father whispered:

“I was trying to protect the family.””

Celeste laughed.

A broken laugh.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

The words echoed.

Because now she understood.

The same way I had.

Naomi looked toward the entrance.

“Security needs to find General Vale.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Too late.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He pulled out his phone.

“He knew tonight would happen.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

Daniel looked at the message.

“He’s the one sending them.””

Silence.

“What?””

I stared at him.

“The messages?””

Daniel nodded.

“Vale.””

“But why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because he knows the truth is coming out.””

A chill ran through me.

“What truth?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“The operation wasn’t only compromised.””

He looked at my father.

“Someone tried to make sure you never returned.””

My father’s face changed.

“Maya…”

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“Your father wasn’t the person who betrayed your unit.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who?””

Daniel looked toward the ballroom doors.

Everyone followed his eyes.

A man stood there.

Older.

Wearing a formal military suit.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he owned the room.

People immediately stepped aside.

My father whispered:

“No.””

Naomi’s hand moved instinctively.

Not toward a weapon.

Toward her phone.

Because she recognized him.

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s General Marcus Vale.””

The man smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like someone who had been waiting for this moment.

Then he spoke.

“Hello, Maya.””

My entire body went cold.

Because he knew my name.

He walked into the ballroom and looked directly at my scar.

Then he said:

“I see you finally learned what your father was willing to sacrifice.””

Nobody moved.

May you like

Then General Vale smiled slightly.

“But you still don’t know what he was willing to hide.””
