Chapter 11: The Evidence Under the Floor
Nobody spoke after Victor left.
The sound of the door closing echoed through the living room.
A simple click.
A normal sound.
But nothing about my life felt normal anymore.
My father was alive.
My mother had hidden the truth.
Victor had controlled my family for years.
And somewhere in this house were documents that could explain everything.
I looked at Denise.
“Where are they?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
She sat down slowly.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“You just said Victor took them.””
“I thought he did.””
“You thought?””
She looked exhausted.
“I never saw them again.””
Dean Carter looked around the room.
“What documents are we talking about?””
My mother swallowed.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She looked at the front door.
Like she was afraid Victor could still hear us.
“Proof that Victor wasn’t just controlling our finances.””
A pause.
“He was controlling other families too.””
The room went quiet.
Dean Carter immediately pulled out his phone.
“Maya, this is important.””
I nodded.
My mind was spinning.
“My father tried to expose him.””
“Yes.””
“And then he disappeared.””
My mother looked down.
“I thought he was gone.””
I froze.
“You thought?””
Her eyes filled.
“After he left, Victor told me Daniel ran away.””
My heart tightened.
“But you didn’t believe him.””
“No.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked at me.
Because there it was.
The question that mattered.
Why?
“I was scared.””
The answer was simple.
And painful.
“Of Victor?””
She nodded.
“But also of losing you.””
I looked away.
“You already were.””
The words hurt both of us.
My younger siblings had moved closer.
Marcus held Nia’s hand.
They didn’t understand everything.
But they understood enough to know our family was breaking open.
Dean Carter stepped toward the hallway.
“Where were these documents stored?””
My mother hesitated.
Then whispered:
“My bedroom.””
We all looked toward the hallway.
The place where she slept.
The place where she kept secrets.
“Maya,” Dean Carter said, “you don’t have to do this alone.””
But I was tired of other people deciding what I could handle.
“I need to see.””
My mother followed.
“Maya.””
I stopped.
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those words should have fixed something.
They didn’t.
But they mattered.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
Her face fell.
“But I’m still hurt.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
We walked into her bedroom.
The room smelled like lavender and old books.
Everything looked exactly the same.
Which somehow made it worse.
A normal room.
A room where impossible things had been hidden.
My mother opened the closet.
She moved clothes aside.
Then stopped.
“There.””
I looked.
Behind a row of hanging jackets was a loose wooden panel.
My heart started racing.
The same place my father had mentioned.
The blue notebook.
The hidden space.
My mother reached toward it.
Then pulled back.
“I haven’t opened it in years.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because the last time I did, I realized how much I had lost.””
She removed the panel.
Inside was a small metal box.
Old.
Dusty.
Untouched.
Dean Carter moved closer.
My mother opened it.
Inside were papers.
Photographs.
Letters.
And a blue notebook.
I stared.
My father had been telling the truth.
I picked up the notebook.
The first page had handwriting.
My father’s handwriting.
*If Maya ever finds this, it means I failed to protect her.*
My vision blurred.
I turned the page.
The next sentence made my entire body freeze.
*Victor didn’t disappear me. I chose to disappear because he threatened the one person I couldn’t lose.*
I looked at my mother.
She covered her mouth.
“What?””
I kept reading.
The next lines were written like a confession.
*He told me if I exposed him, Denise and Maya would suffer.*
My hands shook.
My father had left.
Not because he didn’t love us.
Because he thought leaving would save us.
I turned another page.
Then stopped.
A name appeared.
A name I recognized.
Dean Carter.
I looked up.
“Why is your name in this notebook?””
Dean Carter went still.
Everyone turned toward him.
He stared at the page.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Because your father asked me to help him.””
