The Scholarship She Stole / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Evidence Attached to the Form

Marcus read the email twice.

The first time, his eyes moved too quickly to absorb the words. The second time, each sentence seemed to tighten something around his chest.

Zoria stood beside him, her phone trembling in her hands. Behind them, the graduation party had fallen apart. Guests lingered near the tables, whispering among themselves, while Vanessa stood beside the serving table with her fallen phone lying facedown on the patio.

“What did they find?”” Marcus asked.

Zoria swallowed.

“An attachment. Mr. Carter said the original submission records were preserved, but this email says they found another document linked to the withdrawal request.””

“Read it aloud, baby.””

She took a breath.

“‘During our preliminary review, we identified an additional financial document submitted alongside the scholarship withdrawal request. The document appears to contain information that may not have been authorized by the student. Please preserve all relevant communications pending further investigation.’”

Marcus looked up.

“What financial document?””

Zoria scrolled down.

“There isn't a copy attached to this email. They want me to contact the admissions office.””

Vanessa bent to retrieve her phone.

“That is enough.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“No. It isn't.””

She straightened, clutching the phone against her chest.

“You have allowed this man to come into our home and accuse me in front of our friends. Now you're reading private university correspondence aloud like it's some kind of courtroom.””

“You could have stopped all of this by telling the truth.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“I have told the truth.””

“Then explain the financial document.””

“I don't know what they're talking about.””

Zoria stared at her.

“You knew about the withdrawal form before Mr. Carter showed it to us. You knew exactly what he was going to say.””

Vanessa pointed at her.

“Because you've been accusing me of things all afternoon!””

“Because you told me I lost my scholarship!””

“And I believed that you were making a mistake!””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You believed it so strongly that you submitted paperwork on her behalf?””

Vanessa looked toward the guests.

“I'm not discussing this any further.””

She turned toward the house.

Marcus followed her with his voice.

“If you walk away again, don't expect me to pretend this never happened.””

Vanessa stopped at the patio doors.

For a moment, her shoulders rose and fell with controlled breaths. Then she turned around, wearing the same practiced expression she used whenever she wanted the world to believe she was the reasonable one.

“Marcus, think carefully. You have a wife and two daughters. Are you willing to destroy this family over a misunderstanding?””

Zoria flinched at the word misunderstanding.

Marcus noticed.

“Don't put this on the children,” he said.

“You're the adult who needs to explain what happened.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

She went inside and shut the door.

The click of the lock seemed louder than the conversations around them.

Zoria stared at the glass doors.

“She always does that.””

Marcus put his arm around her.

“What?””

“She says something terrible, then acts like we're the ones hurting her when we ask why.””

He pulled her gently against his side.

“You shouldn't have had to live like that.””

Zoria's face crumpled.

“I kept thinking if I worked harder, she would finally stop treating me like I didn't belong here.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“You belonged here before you ever earned a scholarship. You don't have to earn your place in my life.””

For a few moments, she simply cried into his shoulder.

Then Kendra approached them.

Her white dress was wrinkled now, and her phone hung loosely in her hand.

“Uncle Marcus?””

He looked at her.

“I'm listening.””

Kendra glanced toward the house.

“I think I know what that financial document might be.””

Zoria stepped away from her father.

“What do you mean?””

Kendra rubbed her palms against her dress.

“A few weeks ago, Mom asked me to bring some papers from her home office. She said she needed them for a family budget meeting.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“What papers?””

“A bank statement, some scholarship information, and a document with Zoria's name on it.””

Zoria went pale.

“You saw my name?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Mom said you already knew about it. She told me it was part of your decision to stay home.””

Kendra's voice broke.

“I believed her. I wanted to believe her because I didn't want to think she was doing something wrong.””

Marcus took a slow breath.

“Did you read the document?””

“Only part of it. I saw a number and something about education expenses. Mom told me not to touch anything on her desk.””

Zoria looked toward the house.

“What number?””

Kendra shook her head.

“I don't remember exactly. But I remember asking why my name was on one of the pages.””

“What did she say?””

Kendra hesitated.

“She said she was making sure both of us had a future.””

Marcus looked at the closed doors.

The explanation sounded less like reassurance and more like a warning.

He took out his phone and called Mr. Carter.

The admissions officer answered after two rings.

“Mr. Davis?””

“We received your email. My stepdaughter says she saw documents in Vanessa's office that may be connected to the withdrawal.””

“Please don't confront anyone over documents you haven't verified,” Mr. Carter said.

“I'll arrange for our compliance officer to contact Zoria directly. If you have messages or papers already in your possession, preserve them.””

“We don't have the papers.””

“Then don't search for or take anything without permission. We need to establish where the records came from and who submitted them.””

Marcus thanked him and ended the call.

Kendra stood with her eyes fixed on the ground.

“There's something else.””

Zoria looked at her.

“What?””

Kendra pressed her lips together.

“Mom told me that if your scholarship disappeared, the family would finally be able to afford the things we'd been putting off.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What things?””

Kendra shook her head.

“I don't know. She wouldn't explain.””

“Did she say anything about your college?””

Kendra nodded.

“She said we would have options. She said I shouldn't worry about applications anymore.””

Zoria looked as though someone had struck her.

“You thought my scholarship was going to pay for your future?””

“No!”” Kendra cried.

“I didn't know that. I swear.””

“Then why did you believe her when she said I had given it up?””

“Because I was selfish!”” Kendra shouted.

Her voice broke, and she covered her face.

“I was jealous sometimes. I hated that everyone talked about how smart you were. I hated that Mom compared us. But I never wanted this to happen.””

Zoria watched her cry.

The anger inside her had nowhere simple to go. Kendra had remained silent, and that silence had helped Vanessa keep her isolated. Yet Kendra was also standing there, frightened of the same woman.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“You both deserve to make your own choices. Neither of you should have been manipulated into competing for a future.””

A gust of wind lifted a paper napkin from the table.

Zoria bent to pick it up, then stopped when she noticed a folded envelope beneath the serving tray. It had been pushed against one of the table legs.

Her name was written across the front in Vanessa's handwriting.

“Daddy?””

Marcus followed her gaze.

Zoria picked up the envelope.

Inside was a printed university document and a handwritten note.

The document listed an amount beside the words education funding authorization. The handwriting on the note was unmistakably Vanessa's.

Zoria read the first line.

If anyone asks, she agreed to this.

Marcus reached for the page but didn't take it from her.

“Don't change anything,” he said.

“Let's photograph it where it is and contact Mr. Carter.””

Zoria held the note at arm's length, as if the paper itself could burn her.

Then she turned it over.

On the back, Vanessa had written a second sentence.

Once the money is transferred, there will be no way for her to undo it.

Marcus stared at the words.

Kendra began to sob again.

And from behind the closed patio doors, Vanessa watched them through the glass.

She had seen the envelope in Zoria's hands.

She knew exactly what they had found.
