The Seat They Tried To Steal / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Person Behind My Name

The auditorium felt colder than before.

Not because the temperature had changed.

Because everyone was waiting for one answer.

Someone I trusted.

Those words stayed in my mind.

I looked at Jordan.

My son’s expression was different now.

The anger was gone.

The certainty was gone.

He looked almost afraid for me.

“Who?”” Marcus asked.

Jordan didn’t answer.

He stared at the phone.

Then slowly lowered it.

“The records department sent the verification.””

He swallowed.

“They traced the original creation of the fake statement.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who made it?””

Jordan looked at me.

“Mom…”

I gripped the flowers tighter.

“Tell me.””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“It came from an account connected to someone who helped you with your finances after the divorce.””

My heart stopped.

A memory surfaced.

A person.

A name.

Someone who had sat at my kitchen table.

Someone who had looked me in the eyes and told me everything would be okay.

Jordan looked down.

“The account belongs to Elaine Brooks.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

Elaine.

My old friend.

The woman who helped me organize bills when Marcus left.

The woman who told me she admired my strength.

The woman who hugged me when I cried.

“No,” I whispered.

Jordan stepped closer.

“Mom.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Elaine wouldn’t do that.””

Marcus looked at me.

“You’re sure?””

The question hurt.

Not because he asked.

Because I had no answer.

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted to defend her.

But my mind was already remembering things I had ignored.

Small things.

Moments that didn’t make sense.

The time Elaine asked how much Jordan’s tuition cost.

The time she asked whether Marcus still contributed.

The time she said, “Sometimes people forget who really sacrificed.””

At the time, I thought she was comforting me.

Now those words sounded different.

Jordan looked at the staff member.

“Can you confirm it?””

The woman nodded.

“The university records show the statement was uploaded using an account connected to Elaine Brooks.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Who is she?””

I answered quietly.

“A friend.””

The word felt strange.

Past tense.

A friend.

Vanessa looked at me.

“She did this?””

I looked at her.

The irony was almost unbearable.

The woman who tried to erase me was now shocked someone else had done the same thing.

Jordan looked at Vanessa.

“You’re not the only person involved.””

Vanessa looked away.

And for the first time, she seemed to understand.

She wasn’t the mastermind.

She was part of something larger.

The staff member continued.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She opened another file.

“The fake statement was not the first document created.””

Jordan frowned.

“What was the first?””

She looked at me.

“A letter.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of letter?””

She hesitated.

“A withdrawal letter.””

Marcus frowned.

“Withdrawal from what?””

The woman looked down.

“From Jordan’s educational support.””

I felt my breath disappear.

“No.””

Jordan looked at me.

“Mom?””

I shook my head.

“I never wrote that.””

“I know.””

The staff member nodded.

“We verified the handwriting.””

She looked at the document.

“It was copied from another letter.””

Marcus stared.

“Copied?””

“Yes.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“From what?””

The woman answered:

“From a letter Nia wrote years ago.””

I froze.

Years ago.

What letter?

Then I remembered.

The divorce.

The hardest year of my life.

After Marcus left, I wrote dozens of letters I never sent.

Letters to him.

Letters to myself.

Letters to Jordan.

Things I needed to say but couldn’t.

One of them.

One private letter.

I had written:

“I will do whatever it takes to give my son a future.””

My eyes filled.

Someone had taken my words.

My pain.

My love.

And twisted it.

Jordan looked at me.

“They used your own words.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked sick.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Because they wanted everyone to believe you gave up.””

We all looked at her.

She looked at the documents.

“They wanted Jordan to think you chose to step away.””

Jordan’s face hardened.

“And you believed it.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was told she had already moved on.””

I stared.

“Who told you?””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

But now there was nowhere to hide.

“Elaine.””

The name fell into the room.

Marcus looked at her.

“So she manipulated you too.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“She said Nia wanted distance.””

I felt a strange sadness.

Not for myself.

For all the lies that had been built around us.

Jordan looked at me.

“She made everyone believe a different story.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Then the staff member handed Jordan one final page.

“There’s one more thing.””

Jordan looked down.

“What?””

“The original letter contains a timestamp.””

He read it.

Then his face changed.

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the page.

“This was created two days after you paid my first tuition deposit.””

My heart sank.

Two days after.

Not years later.

Not after a misunderstanding.

Two days.

Someone had seen my sacrifice.

And immediately tried to erase it.

Jordan looked toward the audience.

Toward the people watching.

Then he said:

“My mother was never forgotten.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was targeted.””
