Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath the Wedding Dress
The photograph slipped slightly from my fingers.
I caught it before it touched the floor.
My hands were shaking.
Not because I was afraid anymore.
Because I was trying to understand a life that suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else.
I looked at the picture.
Two newborn babies.
Two tiny hospital bracelets.
Two names.
My eyes moved to the handwritten note again.
“Your sister is not the only child I gave birth to.””
I looked at Brielle.
“What does this mean?””
She didn’t answer.
And I knew.
She had known for years.
“Brielle.””
My voice was quieter this time.
“What does this mean?””
She wiped her face.
“You weren’t supposed to find out tonight.””
I almost laughed.
“Tonight?””
I looked around the wedding reception.
“At my sister’s wedding?””
She looked away.
“I didn’t plan this.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“You only planned to make sure I left before the truth came out.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
Marcus stepped back.
He looked overwhelmed.
“I need someone to explain this.””
Daniel nodded.
“I will.””
He pointed toward the photograph.
“Your mother gave birth to twins.””
The word hit the room.
Twins.
I stared at Brielle.
She stared back.
The pieces began moving into place.
The secrets.
The fear.
The way she always acted like she had something to prove.
The way she treated me like competition instead of family.
“Twins?””
My voice broke.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The pain was immediate.
“You knew my whole life?””
“Nia…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You all knew.””
Nobody denied it.
That hurt the most.
I turned away.
For years, I thought my biggest wound was Brielle rejecting me.
I was wrong.
The bigger wound was realizing how many people loved me while still keeping me in the dark.
Daniel spoke gently.
“Your mother wanted to tell you.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
His face softened.
“Because the circumstances were complicated.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Where is the other child?””
Nobody answered.
My heart started racing.
I looked at Brielle.
Then back at the picture.
Two babies.
Two names.
One missing truth.
“Where is she?””
Brielle whispered:
“Nia…”
The way she said my name made me look up.
She looked terrified.
Not because she was caught.
Because she knew what came next.
Daniel reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out another folded document.
My stomach dropped.
“How many secrets did my mother leave?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Enough to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Enough to hurt me.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
Daniel opened the document.
“This is why your mother asked me to come.””
“What is it?””
He looked at Brielle.
Then at me.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Proof that one of you was raised under the wrong name.””
The ballroom went silent.
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Brielle covered her mouth.
I felt the room spinning.
Wrong name.
Wrong identity.
Wrong life.
I looked at my sister.
“What did you know?””
Her tears fell.
“I knew Mom had secrets.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked at me.
“I knew she was afraid someone would find out.””
“Who?””
Brielle looked toward the entrance.
Toward the empty doorway.
Like she expected someone else to walk in.
Then she whispered:
“Your biological father.””
The room erupted in whispers.
I froze.
“My father?””
Brielle nodded.
“He was looking for you.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“My whole life…”
My voice cracked.
“My whole life, you knew someone was looking for me?””
She cried harder.
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
I stepped back.
“By destroying me?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“By making sure you stayed invisible.””
Invisible.
The word hurt.
Because that was exactly how I had felt.
At family dinners.
At celebrations.
Beside Brielle.
Invisible.
Daniel folded the document.
“Your mother left one final instruction.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He held the paper tightly.
“She said this should only be opened if both daughters were present.””
I glanced at Brielle.
She looked terrified.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked down at the document.
Then slowly lifted his eyes.
“It says who your mother wanted to protect…”
A pause.
“And who she was afraid of.””
Before he could continue, the ballroom doors suddenly opened.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Elegant.
Holding a familiar-looking envelope.
She looked directly at me.
And said:
“Nia Carter?””
I froze.
“Yes?””
Her expression changed.
Like she had finally found someone she had searched for years.
“I’m sorry I’m late.””
She lifted the envelope.
“But your mother asked me to give you this only after Brielle admitted the truth.””
Brielle stepped backward.
“No…”
The woman looked at her.
And said:
“Because this is the letter your mother wrote to her.””
Brielle went completely still.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
I saw my sister afraid of what was inside an envelope.
