Chapter 7: The Brother Who Never Died

I had spent years believing my family’s greatest sins were buried with my father.

I was wrong.

They were alive.

They were breathing.

And now they had a name.

Damian Blackwood.

My uncle.

The man everyone told me was gone.

I stared at Elena across the dining room table.

The person I had defended.

The person I had trusted.

The person who had just admitted there was another chapter of my family’s story that I never knew existed.

“What do you mean he left behind a name?”” I asked.

Elena looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying a weight for years and finally reached the point where she could no longer hold it alone.

“Our father knew Damian survived.””

Nobody moved.

Even Vincent looked disturbed.

I turned toward him.

“You knew this?””

Vincent shook his head.

“No.””

For the first time all night, I believed him.

Because Vincent looked just as shocked as I felt.

“How long?”” I asked Elena.

She looked down.

“Since before Dad died.””

The answer made my hands tighten.

“You knew my uncle was alive and you said nothing?””

“I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

My voice rose.

The guards outside the room shifted.

Elena flinched.

Not because I was yelling.

Because she knew why.

Fear had been controlling my family for years.

And I was tired of letting it.

“You let me build an empire while someone from our past was hiding in the shadows.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone said that.

Everyone claimed protection was the reason they lied.

Vincent.

Elena.

Maybe even my father.

But nobody ever stopped to ask if I wanted their protection.

Nobody ever trusted me with the truth.

“Where is he?””

Elena’s eyes moved toward Clara.

Then Lily.

Then back to me.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

Her voice cracked.

“I swear.””

I studied her face.

My sister was many things.

Stubborn.

Proud.

Sometimes reckless.

But she had never been good at hiding fear.

And right now, she looked terrified.

“Then tell me everything you know.””

Elena sat down slowly.

“Damian was older than Dad. When they were younger, they built everything together.””

I listened.

“People think your father created this family alone. He didn’t. Damian was the strategist.””

Vincent nodded slightly.

“That’s true.””

Elena continued.

“But Damian wanted more. He didn’t want influence. He wanted control.””

I looked at the photograph.

The secrets.

The hidden rooms.

The money.

Everything started connecting.

“My father removed him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elena looked at me.

“Because Damian tried to kill him.””

The room went quiet.

My father had enemies.

Thousands.

But family betrayal was different.

It cut deeper.

“What happened?””

“Dad survived. But he knew Damian would come back.””

“And he never told me?””

Elena shook her head.

“He wanted you away from it.””

I looked at Vincent.

“And he sent you.””

Vincent nodded.

“He believed keeping you uninvolved was the only way.””

I stood.

“That was never his choice to make.””

Nobody responded.

Because everyone knew I was right.

My father had spent his entire life controlling threats.

But he had also controlled the people he loved.

And maybe that was his greatest mistake.

A sound interrupted us.

A phone ringing.

Everyone froze.

One of the guards looked around.

Nobody moved.

Then Clara stood.

“Wait.””

She reached into her pocket.

I looked at her.

“You had a phone?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t put it there.””

My blood ran cold.

The guard immediately checked her sweater pocket.

A small phone appeared.

Unknown.

No one spoke.

Because everyone understood.

Someone had planted it on her.

I grabbed it.

The screen showed one message.

No number.

No name.

Just words.

*YOU FOUND THE TRUTH TOO LATE.*

Then another message appeared.

*COME TO THE OLD WING ALONE.*

A location inside the mansion.

The old west wing.

A part of the house nobody used anymore.

I looked at Vincent.

His face turned pale.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“That area was sealed years ago.””

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Why?””

“Because that’s where your father kept his final records.””

The room went silent again.

Another hidden place.

Another secret.

Another piece of my father’s unfinished war.

“I’m going.””

Vincent immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You’re not in charge anymore.””

His expression tightened.

“I know.””

For the first time, there was no argument in his voice.

Only concern.

“Then why are you telling me no?””

“Because whoever sent that message wants you there.””

I held up the phone.

“Maybe.””

“No.””

Vincent stepped closer.

“Not maybe.””

His eyes were serious.

“This is exactly what they wanted.””

I looked around the room.

At my family.

My wife.

My daughter.

Everyone I loved had been pulled into this.

If someone wanted me alone, they were making a mistake.

Because I was done fighting alone.

“Get every guard ready.””

Vincent looked surprised.

“You’re taking everyone?””

“No.””

I looked at Clara.

Then Lily.

“Everyone stays here.””

Clara immediately shook her head.

“Adrian.””

“No.””

I softened my voice.

“For once, trust me.””

She looked at me.

And after everything that happened, I knew that wasn’t easy.

But finally, she nodded.

I walked toward the door.

Vincent followed.

“Elena,” I said.

She looked up.

“You’re staying too.””

She nodded.

Then I stopped.

Because something bothered me.

Something small.

Something I couldn’t explain.

I looked back at the table.

The photograph.

The records.

The phone.

Everything was arranged too perfectly.

Like someone wanted us to discover it.

Like someone wanted us to follow a trail.

And suddenly, I realized something.

Maybe the person behind all this wasn’t hiding.

May you like

Maybe they were leading me.

Straight toward them.
