Chapter 8: The Bracelet Around Vanessa's Wrist
I drove to Vanessa's apartment before I could talk myself out of it.
She had moved there two weeks earlier, claiming she needed space while we finalized the wedding arrangements. At the time, I'd thought she was nervous about getting married.
Now I wondered whether she'd been waiting for something.
When she opened the door, she was wearing the same silver bracelet.
Her eyes immediately dropped to the photograph in my hand.
"You found it," she whispered.
I stepped inside.
"Who is the little girl standing beside Emily?""
Vanessa closed the door.
For a moment, she looked as though she might deny recognizing the picture.
Then she removed her bracelet and placed it on the table.
"Her name was Grace.""
I stared at her.
"Who was Grace?""
"A little girl who lived at Rosewood House.""
"Was she your daughter?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
"Then why are you wearing her bracelet?""
Vanessa sat down.
"Because Emily gave it to me.""
I placed the photograph in front of her.
"This was taken less than three weeks after Maya was born. Emily wrote that it was the first time she saw the girl smile.""
Vanessa ran her fingers over the image.
"Grace was three years old when Emily met her. She had been living at Rosewood House for almost two years.""
"How did my wife know her?""
"Emily volunteered there.""
The answer made me feel as though someone had struck me.
"She never told me.""
"She didn't tell anyone much about it.""
Vanessa looked up.
"She said she was trying to help children who had nowhere else to go.""
I pulled out a chair.
"Why was she paying for the place?""
"Because she wanted to adopt Grace.""
The room fell silent.
I stared at her.
"Adopt her?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Emily told me she couldn't stop thinking about that little girl. She said Grace reminded her of someone she'd lost.""
"Who?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I don't know.""
I paced to the window.
My wife had given birth to Maya, or at least I believed she had. She had spent three weeks recovering from a difficult delivery. Then, somehow, she had begun visiting a children's home and paying for the care of a little girl.
A little girl who looked exactly like my daughter.
"Did Emily adopt Grace?""
"No.""
"Why not?""
"Because the adoption application was rejected.""
"On what grounds?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Because Grace's identity was disputed.""
I turned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means there was another family who claimed she belonged to them.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Which family?""
Vanessa's eyes met mine.
"Yours.""
I stared at her.
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my heart.
"That's impossible.""
"Emily told me the same thing.""
"Explain it.""
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"After the hospital discovered the bracelet discrepancy, someone transferred a baby to Rosewood House. The records said the child had no confirmed identity. But Emily believed that child was hers.""
"Why?""
"Because the medical records from her delivery didn't match the information on Maya's discharge papers.""
I thought of the hospital register.
Two babies.
Two bracelets.
A transfer at 12:31 a.m.
"How old was Grace when Emily met her?""
"Three years old.""
"But Maya was only three weeks old when Emily visited Rosewood House.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Emily didn't meet Grace in October twenty years ago. The photograph was taken three years later.""
I looked at the date again.
My hands went numb.
The writing on the back had faded. I'd mistaken the final digit.
The photograph had been taken three years after Maya's birth.
By then, Emily had already been paying the trust for months.
I sat down heavily.
"Why didn't she tell me about this?""
"Because she was afraid you would try to take Grace away.""
"Why would I do that?""
"Because the records suggested Grace was your biological daughter.""
The words seemed to echo around the room.
I stared at Vanessa.
"Are you telling me Emily believed she had given birth to one child, raised another, and then found her biological daughter three years later?""
Vanessa nodded.
"She believed the hospital had sent the wrong baby home.""
I pressed my palms against my eyes.
It was the most terrible possibility yet.
Emily might have discovered that Maya wasn't her biological child. She might have found a little girl who resembled her daughter, believed that girl was hers, and spent years trying to bring her home.
But why had she kept the truth from me?
"Did she ever tell you who Grace's parents were?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She said the hospital records had been altered. She didn't know whether Grace was related to you or to her.""
I looked at the bracelet.
"Then why did she give this to you?""
"Because I was the only person who knew the original story.""
"What original story?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"The night Maya was born, Emily asked me to choose.""
I went completely still.
"Choose what?""
"Which baby I wanted to take home.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"That makes no sense.""
"I know how it sounds.""
"Then explain it.""
Vanessa stood and walked toward the window.
"After the bracelet error was discovered, the hospital couldn't determine which baby belonged to which mother. Both babies were healthy. Both mothers were recovering. And the hospital administration was terrified of a scandal.""
"So they asked you to choose?""
"No. Emily asked me.""
I shook my head.
"Why would she do that?""
"Because she believed one of the babies was yours and the other was hers. She said if I took the baby I had delivered, she would raise the other child until the records could be corrected.""
I stared at her.
"Did you agree?""
Vanessa covered her face.
"I was seventeen. My mother had just died. I had no money, no home, and no one to help me. I thought Emily was offering me a chance to keep my daughter safe.""
"And you let her take the other baby?""
"I didn't know which one was mine!""
Her voice broke.
"I thought I was choosing the baby with the pink bracelet. But when the nurse returned, the bracelets had been changed again.""
I felt sick.
"Who changed them?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you tell Emily?""
"She told me not to say anything until the investigation was finished.""
I stepped closer.
"And you spent twenty years believing she had stolen your daughter?""
Vanessa nodded through tears.
"Because the hospital told me the baby I'd chosen had been transferred to foster care. They said I had signed the papers.""
"You told me you signed temporary guardianship papers.""
"I did. But I never agreed to give up my daughter permanently.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Where is Grace now?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She disappeared from Rosewood House when she was six.""
"Disappeared?""
"Her file says she was transferred to another facility. But the receiving institution never confirmed she arrived.""
I stared at her.
Another child.
Another missing record.
Another person who had vanished while adults argued over paperwork.
I thought of Maya, asleep at my mother's house, believing that her biggest problem was whether she could still love her mother.
"What happened to the silver bracelet?"" I asked.
Vanessa touched the empty space around her wrist.
"Emily gave it to me on the day Grace disappeared. She told me to keep it safe because one day, the girl who wore it would come looking for me.""
My phone rang.
Michael.
I answered immediately.
"Daniel, I found Richard Cole's daughter. She has something that belonged to her father.""
"What?""
"A private ledger from Rosewood House. It lists every child who entered the facility, every transfer, and every person who paid for their care.""
My heart raced.
"Does it mention Grace?""
"Yes.""
"And?""
Michael paused.
"Grace was never legally adopted. But someone removed her from the facility using a birth certificate issued under a different name.""
"What name?""
I heard papers rustling.
Then Michael spoke.
"Emily Hayes.""
I stared at Vanessa.
She looked as if she might collapse.
"That's my wife's name," I whispered.
Michael continued.
"Daniel, there's more. The birth certificate was issued four years after Maya was born.""
I closed my eyes.
Four years.
A missing child had been given my wife's identity.
And someone had gone to the trouble of creating a legal record that made it look as though Emily had given birth to her.
I ended the call and looked at Vanessa.
"Did Emily ever tell you why she wanted Grace to have her name?""
Vanessa shook her head.
Then she whispered something that made the room go cold.
"Because Grace wasn't just another child to her.""
I waited.
May you like
Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.
"Grace was the baby Emily had held in her arms before the hospital switched the bracelets.""
