Chapter 8: The Father’s Final Choice

Michael stopped moving.

The darkness around him felt heavier than the walls of the coffee shop.

He heard Annie’s voice disappear into the chaos.

He heard footsteps.

He heard someone breathing close by.

But the only thing he could process was one sentence.

I’m the reason they found you.

His father’s voice.

Thomas Callahan.

Alive.

Standing beside him.

And somehow connected to everything.

Michael turned toward the voice.

“You.””

A faint light from the street entered through the broken window.

Enough to see Thomas’s face.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

But real.

Michael’s fist tightened.

“You were here.””

Thomas didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“You knew where I was.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Henry was giving the drive to Annie.””

Thomas looked away.

“Yes.””

The anger that filled Michael was almost impossible to control.

“You watched this happen.””

“No.””

“You watched us get hunted.””

“No.””

“You let Annie become a target.””

Thomas’s expression changed.

Pain.

Not fear.

Pain.

“I was trying to keep her alive.””

Michael stepped closer.

“By doing what?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any excuse.

Then Annie screamed again.

“Daddy!””

Michael turned.

A shadow moved near the back entrance.

Someone had her.

His entire body reacted.

He didn’t care about the files.

The families.

The secrets.

The lies.

He only cared about his daughter.

He ran.

Thomas grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Michael turned violently.

“Let go.””

“Listen to me.””

“My daughter is gone.””

Thomas held on.

“You need to understand what’s happening.””

Michael pulled away.

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

Thomas looked toward the darkness.

“Daniel doesn’t want Annie because of the drive.””

Michael froze.

“Then why?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Because Henry told her something.””

Michael remembered.

The station.

Henry’s weak hand.

His final whisper.

The truth was hidden where nobody would look.

Thomas continued.

“Henry discovered Daniel wasn’t afraid of the evidence.””

“Then what?””

“He was afraid of the person who could reveal it.””

Michael looked toward where Annie had disappeared.

“My daughter?””

Thomas nodded.

Michael shook his head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when you know why Henry chose her.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A door closing.

Thomas moved.

“Come with me.””

Michael stared.

“You expect me to trust you?””

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“I expect you to trust your daughter.””

Those words stopped him.

Because Thomas was right about one thing.

Annie needed him.

Michael followed.

They moved through the back corridors of the building.

Thomas knew exactly where he was going.

That bothered Michael.

“How long have you been working with Daniel?””

Thomas stopped.

“I wasn’t working with him.””

“You were here.””

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

Thomas looked at him.

“I was following him.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

“You think I’m lying.””

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“You have every reason not to believe me.””

For the first time, Michael heard something different in his father’s voice.

Not an excuse.

Regret.

“I spent eight years trying to undo one mistake.””

Michael looked at him.

“What mistake?””

Thomas looked down.

“Leaving you.””

The answer was too simple.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“You didn’t just leave.””

Michael’s voice cracked.

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let Mom suffer.””

“I know.””

“You let me grow up without answers.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Michael wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

But the sadness in his father’s face made everything complicated.

Thomas whispered:

“I thought disappearing would protect you.””

“It didn’t.””

“No.””

He looked at Michael.

“It only made you carry the same burden I carried.””

They reached a locked door.

Thomas pulled out a key.

Michael stared.

“You still had access?””

Thomas opened it.

“Some things never disappear.””

Inside was a small storage room.

Old documents.

Boxes.

Photographs.

A hidden archive.

Michael looked around.

“What is this?””

“Everything Henry found.””

Thomas walked to a box.

“Daniel thought he controlled the evidence.””

He opened it.

“He was wrong.””

Michael saw dozens of files.

Names.

Dates.

Financial records.

And one folder marked:

*PROJECT ANNIE.*

His face changed.

“What is that?””

Thomas immediately closed it.

“Not yet.””

Michael grabbed his arm.

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“Not one more secret.””

Thomas looked at him.

Then slowly opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Annie.

But younger.

A baby.

Michael stared.

“What?””

Thomas looked devastated.

“Henry discovered Daniel had been watching her since before she was born.””

Michael felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel believed she was connected to the final evidence.””

“How?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then said:

“Because Annie’s mother was involved.””

Michael froze.

“My wife?””

Thomas nodded.

“She knew Henry.””

Michael’s anger shifted into confusion.

“Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“My wife died before Annie was born.””

“I know.””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“Before she died, she gave Henry something.””

Michael stared.

“What?””

Thomas opened another file.

A recording.

A message.

From Rachel.

Michael’s hands shook.

He hadn’t heard her voice in seven years.

Thomas pressed play.

The room filled with her voice.

“Henry, if you’re hearing this, then Daniel knows.””

Michael stopped breathing.

Rachel sounded scared.

But strong.

“I found out what they were doing.””

A pause.

“They weren’t just hiding money.””

She continued.

“They were hiding identities.””

Michael looked confused.

Thomas watched him.

Rachel’s voice continued.

“There is a reason Daniel has spent years trying to find the Callahan family.””

A sound in the background.

Like someone was near her.

“If anything happens to me, protect my daughter.””

Michael’s eyes filled.

Annie.

Rachel had known.

She had known danger was coming.

The recording continued.

“And tell Michael the truth.””

The audio became distorted.

Then one final sentence.

“The girl he thinks is his daughter…”

Michael froze.

The recording cut out.

Silence.

Thomas looked away.

Michael slowly turned.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas whispered:

“Michael…”

“No.””

His voice rose.

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Rachel was protecting Annie.””

“From what?””

Thomas hesitated.

“From Daniel.””

Michael stared.

“Why?””

The answer came from behind him.

A familiar voice.

Daniel.

“Because Annie is not the child you think she is.””

Michael turned.

Daniel stood at the doorway.

Two men beside him.

And Annie.

Safe.

But terrified.

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“Annie!””

Daniel held up a hand.

“She’s unharmed.””

“Let her go.””

Daniel smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

Michael looked at him.

“Understand what?””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

Then back at Michael.

“The reason Henry chose Annie.””

Michael said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“Because Henry knew the truth.””

A pause.

“The Callahan family wasn’t protecting evidence.””

He looked at Annie.

“They were protecting an heir.””

Michael felt cold.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Annie is the last person who can expose everything.””

Michael’s voice was quiet.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel smiled.

“The truth your father, your mother, and Henry Vale all died trying to protect.””

He looked at Annie.

“Your daughter is the reason this war started.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Ask Thomas.””

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas looked broken.

Michael stared.

“Dad?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

And finally said the words Michael had been waiting his entire life to hear.

“The truth is…”

May you like

He looked at Annie.

“…Annie was never supposed to survive.””
