Chapter 8: The Deal My Father Made

The words felt impossible.

Not because they didn’t make sense.

Because they did.

A deal.

My father had made a deal.

To keep me alive.

I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh.

To deny it.

To tell me this stranger was lying.

But Daniel Carter, the man who had spent my entire life teaching me that honesty mattered, looked at me with tears in his eyes.

And he said nothing.

That was the answer.

My chest tightened.

“Dad.””

My voice barely came out.

“What deal?””

Nobody moved.

The stranger stood near the door, watching.

Richard looked away.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Again.

My father slowly walked toward the table.

“Ava, please.””

“Please what?””

My voice rose.

“Please understand?””

He stopped.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The anger came faster than the tears.

“No, I don’t understand.””

I pointed at the flash drive.

“My mother died. Vanessa lied to me. My trust was stolen.

Someone is watching me. And now I find out you made a deal?””

My father looked broken.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“That is not an answer anymore.””

The room went silent.

Because everyone knew I was right.

He lowered his head.

“You deserve the truth.””

I laughed softly.

“I’ve been waiting eighteen years for it.””

My father took a breath.

Then he sat down.

“The night your mother died…”

He stopped.

His hands tightened.

“I found out Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””

Richard looked up.

“What?””

My father looked at him.

“You didn’t know?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

My father looked at Marcus.

“Neither did you.””

Marcus frowned.

“Daniel, what are you saying?””

My father stared at the flash drive.

“Vanessa was only one part of it.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who else?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Someone powerful.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

My father looked at him.

“It’s time.””

He turned back to me.

“Your mother discovered a financial network.””

“A network?””

“Yes.””

“Doing what?””

“Moving money. Hiding assets. Manipulating trusts.””

I looked at the documents.

“My trust?””

“Yes.””

My father nodded.

“Your mother found out that people were targeting children’s inheritance accounts.””

My stomach turned.

“And Vanessa was involved?””

“She was.””

“Why?””

“Because she was being used.””

The room went quiet.

Even after everything, I didn’t expect to hear that.

“Used?””

My father nodded.

“She thought she was taking control.””

Marcus spoke quietly.

“But someone was controlling her.””

My father looked at him.

“Yes.””

A strange silence followed.

Because suddenly Vanessa wasn’t the end of the story.

She was another piece.

Another person who had been hiding something.

My father continued.

“The night your mother died, she called me because she had proof.””

“What proof?””

“The name of the person behind it.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“She was going to tell me.””

My heartbeat increased.

“But she never did.””

“Why?””

My father’s face tightened.

“Because when I got to her car…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“There was someone else there.””

The room froze.

“Who?””

My father looked at the stranger.

The man near the door.

Then back at me.

“I never saw his face clearly.””

The stranger stepped forward.

“That’s because he wanted you to think you didn’t.””

My father looked angry.

“You knew?””

The man nodded.

“I knew more than you.””

My father stood.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

“My name is Gabriel Reed.””

My eyes widened.

“Reed?””

Marcus looked shocked.

“Impossible.””

Gabriel looked at him.

“You thought I was dead too?””

The silence was deafening.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You disappeared.””

“I had to.””

“Why?””

Gabriel looked at Vanessa’s old photograph.

“Because your sister wasn’t the only one who made a deal.””

My head spun.

“Everyone keeps saying that word.””

I looked at Gabriel.

“Deal with who?””

He reached into his pocket.

This time, he pulled out a small key.

He placed it beside the flash drive.

“Your mother knew she was in danger.””

My father looked at the key.

“What is that?””

“She left it for Ava.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Gabriel looked at me.

“Because she knew Daniel would try to protect you.””

My father flinched.

“And she knew protection sometimes meant silence.””

That hurt.

Because it was true.

My father wasn’t a villain.

That almost made it worse.

He had loved me.

He had protected me.

But he had also decided I couldn’t handle the truth.

Gabriel continued.

“She left instructions.””

“What instructions?””

“That if anything happened to her, Ava should never trust anyone who claimed they were protecting her.””

The words hit hard.

Because that was everyone’s excuse.

Vanessa.

My father.

Everyone.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Gabriel pointed at the flash drive.

“Your mother recorded a message.””

My hands shook.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I get it before?””

“Because Vanessa found the first copy.””

Richard’s face changed.

“The missing page.””

Gabriel nodded.

“She took it.””

My father frowned.

“But the drive?””

“Your wife didn’t know about the second copy.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where was it?””

Gabriel looked at the key.

“Hidden where only Ava would find it.””

I picked up the key.

It was small.

Old.

A tiny engraving was carved into the metal.

A heart.

My mother’s symbol.

I looked at Gabriel.

“Where does this go?””

He answered quietly.

“Your mother’s old house.””

I froze.

“My mother’s house?””

The one nobody talked about.

The one sold before I was old enough to remember.

“The house was never sold,” Gabriel said.

My father looked stunned.

“What?””

“Your wife created a false sale record.””

Richard stood.

“She hid the property?””

Gabriel nodded.

“She knew someone would search her assets.””

My mind raced.

“My mother left me a house?””

“Not a house.””

Gabriel looked at me.

“A vault.””

Nobody spoke.

A vault.

A hidden place.

A secret my mother had prepared before she died.

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

This time, the number wasn’t unknown.

It was Vanessa.

My father answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

Her voice came through.

She sounded exhausted.

Terrified.

“Daniel.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“I found the person who has been threatening us.””

My father looked at me.

“Who?””

Vanessa’s breathing became shaky.

“I don’t know his name.””

Gabriel’s expression changed.

“But I know what he wants.””

“What?””

Vanessa whispered:

“He wants Ava’s mother’s final recording.””

The room went silent.

My father tightened his grip on the phone.

“Vanessa, where are you?””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“I’m at the house.””

My blood ran cold.

“What house?””

Nobody needed to ask.

Everyone knew.

My mother’s hidden house.

My father stood immediately.

“How did you find it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she whispered:

“Because someone gave me the key.””

I looked down.

At the key in my hand.

My heart stopped.

Impossible.

There was only one key.

The one my mother left.

The one Gabriel brought.

The one I was holding.

Then Vanessa said something that made everyone freeze.

“Daniel…”

Her voice broke.

“The person who gave me the key was Ava’s mother.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was impossible.

My mother had been dead for eighteen years.

And yet Vanessa was standing somewhere she should never have been able to enter.

Using something only my mother should have possessed.

Then the call ended.

My father looked at the key in my hand.

At Gabriel.

At Marcus.

And finally at me.

The truth had become something far more terrifying than a family secret.

Because if Vanessa was telling the truth…

May you like

Then my mother had not only left me a message.

She had left someone behind.
