Chapter 3: The Man Vanessa Never Mentioned

My father’s question stayed in the room long after he said the name.

“Who is Daniel Cross?””

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

Because everyone was waiting for someone else to break.

Vanessa was the first person I looked at.

Her face had changed completely.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect smile.

The calm eyes.

The woman who had walked into our family’s life wearing expensive dresses and carrying expensive promises suddenly looked like someone who had been caught standing too close to a fire.

My father noticed.

That was the problem with Vanessa.

She was excellent at controlling conversations.

But she was terrible at controlling moments when she didn’t have time to prepare.

“Vanessa,” my father said.

His voice was quiet.

“Who is Daniel Cross?””

She looked away.

A tiny movement.

But enough.

My father saw it.

I saw it.

Attorney Williams saw it.

And suddenly, the photograph on the table felt heavier than a hundred pages of legal documents.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I don’t know why you’re acting like this is some kind of crime.””

My father looked down at the picture again.

“Then explain it.””

“There is nothing to explain.””

“Then explain why you were meeting a man in secret.””

“He’s a business associate.””

The answer came too quickly.

Almost rehearsed.

I stepped closer.

“Then why did you tell me you didn’t know him?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Her eyes sharpened.

“When did you ask me that?””

“Three months ago.””

The memory came rushing back.

The rain.

The parking garage.

The way Vanessa had looked over her shoulder before getting into a black SUV.

I had been following a suspicion.

Not her.

The suspicion.

There was a difference.

After my mother’s warning signs started making sense, I began looking into Vanessa’s past.

Not because I wanted to hate her.

Because I wanted to understand why someone who claimed to love my father kept asking questions about things that had nothing to do with love.

Her previous marriages.

Her financial history.

Her business connections.

Everything had tiny cracks.

And then I found Daniel Cross.

A man whose name appeared in places it shouldn’t.

My father placed the photograph down.

“Emma.””

I turned toward him.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

His answer hurt.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was disappointed.

“I should have told you everything.””

Vanessa immediately stepped in.

“Marcus, don’t let her manipulate you.””

My father looked at her.

“Manipulate me?””

“Yes.””

She pointed at the photograph.

“She has been spying on me.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No,” Vanessa said.

“You were trying to destroy my relationship.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Relationship?””

The word echoed.

Because Vanessa had just revealed something important.

She wasn’t talking like someone fighting for a marriage.

She was talking like someone fighting for ownership.

Attorney Williams opened his folder.

“I believe we need to discuss Daniel Cross.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“You know him?””

The attorney didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

My father stood.

“What is happening?””

Attorney Williams sighed.

“I was hoping this would never become necessary.””

He removed another document.

“This name appeared during my review of the original trust records.””

My father took the paper.

His eyes moved across it.

Then stopped.

“What does this mean?””

The attorney looked at me.

Then at him.

“Daniel Cross was involved in a company that attempted to purchase several Carter Industries subsidiaries four years ago.””

My father frowned.

“I rejected that offer.””

“Yes.””

“Then why is his name connected to my trust?””

“Because the offer was not the only thing he was interested in.””

The room became silent again.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“You’re making accusations without proof.””

Attorney Williams remained calm.

“I am presenting facts.””

He placed another paper on the table.

“This is a communication record.””

My father picked it up.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then slowly.

Like every word was becoming harder to accept.

“What is this?””

I looked at the page.

I couldn’t read everything from where I stood.

But I saw Vanessa’s name.

And Daniel’s.

And a sentence highlighted in yellow.

*Once Marcus signs, control will transfer according to plan.*

My stomach turned.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That is not what you think.””

My father laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Everyone says that when it is exactly what I think.””

She moved toward him.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice stopped her.

“I listened for two years.””

That sentence hurt more than anger would have.

Because my father wasn’t shouting.

He was grieving.

He wasn’t just discovering a betrayal.

He was realizing he had defended the person causing it.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You’re really going to believe them over me?””

My father looked at her.

“I believed you over everyone.””

A tear rolled down Vanessa’s cheek.

But something about it felt wrong.

Too calculated.

Too familiar.

I had seen those tears before.

The tears she used when my father questioned her.

The tears that always turned into apologies.

The apologies that always turned into forgiveness.

But this time, my father didn’t move toward her.

That scared her.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing,” she whispered.

My father looked confused.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“It’s a warning.””

I stepped forward.

“About what?””

Vanessa stared at me.

“You think your mother left you answers.””

She smiled faintly.

“But your mother left secrets too.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Leave.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

This time, she actually walked toward the door.

But before she reached it, her phone rang.

She stopped.

Everyone heard the sound.

A ringtone.

She looked at the screen.

And for the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

She declined the call.

Immediately.

Too quickly.

My father noticed.

“Who was that?””

“No one.””

Her answer was automatic.

Then the phone rang again.

The same number.

Unknown.

Vanessa stared at it.

The entire room watched.

Finally, my father extended his hand.

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

The word came out before she could control it.

My father took one step forward.

“Vanessa.””

She gripped the phone tighter.

“You don’t want to do this.””

“I want the truth.””

For several seconds, she didn’t move.

Then she answered.

She put the phone to her ear.

“Hello?””

Nobody could hear the person on the other end.

But we could hear Vanessa’s breathing change.

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“No. That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

My father looked at me.

Attorney Williams looked at the phone.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“I told you I handled it.””

Another pause.

Then her face drained of color.

The person on the phone said something that made her freeze.

Finally, she whispered:

“You found her?””

My heart stopped.

Her eyes slowly moved toward me.

Not my father.

Not the attorney.

Me.

The call ended.

Vanessa lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

My father’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Who did they find?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because she was looking at me like I was no longer just an obstacle.

I was a problem.

A problem someone had been trying to solve.

Then her phone buzzed one more time.

A message appeared on the screen.

She didn’t want us to see it.

But she was too slow.

I saw the first line.

And every piece of my body went cold.

*The girl knows too much.*

May you like

The second line appeared.

*Do we move forward with the original plan?*
