Chapter 7: The Brother Behind the Door
For twelve years, Cole believed he had lost everyone.
Elena.
His future.
The life he thought he was building.
But he had never imagined losing his brother.
Because in his mind, his brother had been the one person who stayed.
The one person who knew the truth.
The one person who helped him survive the aftermath.
And now that same person was standing outside the diner window.
Holding a gun.
Cole couldn’t move.
The stranger outside tapped the glass twice.
Just like Raymond had done earlier.
A message.
A warning.
A reminder.
Marcus, the diner manager, stared at the man outside.
His face drained of color.
“That’s not possible.””
Cole slowly turned toward him.
“You know him.””
Marcus looked terrified.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Marcus swallowed.
“He’s your brother.””
The words hit everyone.
Maya looked at Cole.
Her hands moved.
You have another brother?
Cole didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know what answer existed anymore.
His entire life had become a collection of lies.
The man outside raised the gun slightly.
Not pointing.
Just showing it.
Making sure they understood.
Marcus backed away from the window.
“No.””
Cole looked at him.
“You knew?””
Marcus shook his head quickly.
“No. Not this.””
“Then what did you know?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“That Raymond had help.””
Cole stared.
“From my brother?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
The silence was enough.
Cole stepped away from everyone.
His fists tightened.
His breathing slowed.
A habit from years on the road.
Stay calm.
Observe.
Survive.
The door handle moved.
The lock clicked.
Someone outside had a key.
Everyone froze.
Cole looked at Marcus.
“You gave him access?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t have that key.””
The door opened.
Slowly.
The stranger stepped inside.
The bright diner lights revealed him completely.
He was tall.
Same broad shoulders.
Same sharp eyes.
Same dark hair, though shorter.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
The only difference was the expression.
Cole looked tired.
This man looked empty.
The stranger closed the door behind him.
Nobody spoke.
Then he smiled.
“Hello, Cole.””
Cole stared.
“Derek.””
His brother smiled wider.
“Still remember me.””
Cole’s voice was cold.
“I spent twelve years looking for you.””
Derek looked around the diner.
“And you found a family.””
His eyes moved to Maya.
Cole immediately stepped between them.
Derek noticed.
A small smile appeared.
“There he is.””
“What?””
“The hero.””
Cole’s face hardened.
“Leave.””
Derek laughed softly.
“You always did think simple words fixed complicated problems.””
Jordan moved closer to Maya.
Isaiah watched Derek carefully.
He recognized danger.
Cole looked at his brother.
“Where is Raymond?””
Derek’s smile disappeared.
“Still asking the wrong questions.””
Cole took a step forward.
“I asked where he is.””
Derek tilted his head.
“You haven’t asked why.””
Silence.
Derek looked around.
“You think Raymond is the villain.””
Nobody responded.
“Maybe he is.””
A pause.
“But you still don’t know the whole story.””
Cole’s eyes narrowed.
“You helped him.””
Derek’s expression changed.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
“I did.””
Maya looked at him with fear.
Cole’s voice became quieter.
“Why?””
Derek looked at the floor.
“For you.””
Nobody understood.
Cole almost laughed.
“For me?””
Derek nodded.
“You were going to die.””
Cole stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Derek stepped closer.
“Twelve years ago, you found Raymond’s operation.””
“Yes.””
“You thought you were saving Elena.””
“Yes.””
Derek looked at him.
“You weren’t.””
The words landed heavily.
“You were walking into a trap.””
Cole said nothing.
Derek continued.
“Raymond knew you were coming.””
Cole’s face changed.
“How?””
Derek looked at Marcus.
Then back at Cole.
“Because someone told him.””
Marcus lowered his head.
Cole looked at him.
“You said it was Marcus.””
Derek nodded.
“It was.””
Everyone looked at Marcus.
But Derek continued.
“Not because he wanted Elena taken.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
Derek ignored him.
“He thought he was protecting you.””
Cole frowned.
Derek looked at him.
“You don’t remember that night correctly.””
A painful silence followed.
Cole’s jaw tightened.
“I remember everything.””
“No.””
Derek shook his head.
“You remember the version you were given.””
Cole stepped closer.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Derek looked toward Maya.
Then at the children.
Then back at Cole.
“The night Elena disappeared, Raymond wasn’t trying to kill her.””
Nobody moved.
“He was trying to find the evidence she stole.””
Cole stared.
“And?””
Derek’s voice lowered.
“And the evidence wasn’t documents.””
A pause.
“It was a person.””
Cole looked confused.
Derek continued.
“Someone who saw everything.””
Jordan’s face changed.
Isaiah looked down.
Maya froze.
Cole understood.
The children.
Derek nodded.
“Raymond built everything around hiding those kids.””
Cole looked at Maya.
“But why?””
Derek’s expression became serious.
“Because one of them saw him commit a murder.””
Nobody spoke.
The diner felt colder.
Derek looked at Maya.
“She wasn’t just a witness.””
Maya backed away.
Cole noticed.
“What are you saying?””
Derek stared at him.
“She was there.””
Cole looked at Maya.
“No.””
Derek nodded.
“Yes.””
Maya’s hands moved desperately.
Cole watched.
She wasn’t denying it.
She was remembering.
Derek continued.
“She was five months old when Elena found her.””
Cole looked confused.
“Five months?””
Derek nodded.
“Raymond wasn’t after Maya because she saw something.””
A pause.
“He was after her because Elena made him believe she did.””
Cole stared.
The pieces started shifting.
The lies.
The messages.
The fear.
“What does that mean?””
Derek looked at him.
“It means Elena hid the real witness.””
The room went silent.
Jordan looked at Isaiah.
Isaiah whispered:
“The sixth child.””
Derek nodded.
Everyone turned.
The list.
The photograph.
The missing name.
Cole felt his stomach drop.
“The sixth child wasn’t Isaiah.””
Derek shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Derek looked at Maya.
Then at the door.
“She’s been with us the whole time.””
Everyone froze.
Cole’s eyes moved slowly around the diner.
Customers.
Staff.
People who had been there from the beginning.
Then he saw it.
The person standing near the kitchen.
Someone who had been silent through every conversation.
Someone who knew sign language.
Someone who knew Elena.
Someone who had never once looked surprised.
Tasha.
Cole stared.
“Tasha?””
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Acceptance.
Like she knew this moment would come.
Maya immediately stepped back.
Cole whispered:
“No…”
Tasha looked at the children.
Then at Cole.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You knew?””
Tasha closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Cole’s voice was barely controlled.
“How long?””
Tasha looked at Maya.
“Twelve years.””
The entire diner froze.
Cole felt something break inside him.
Twelve years.
She had been here.
Watching.
Waiting.
Knowing.
He stepped closer.
“You were there.””
Tasha nodded.
“The night Elena disappeared.””
Cole stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Tasha’s eyes filled.
“Because Elena made me promise.””
Cole shook his head.
“No.””
Tasha looked at him.
“She said if Raymond knew you found the truth too soon, you would die.””
Cole’s voice cracked with anger.
“So you let me believe she was gone?””
Tasha whispered:
“I let you survive.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Maya suddenly moved.
She grabbed Tasha’s hand.
Tasha looked down.
Maya was signing.
Cole watched.
Tasha answered.
Their conversation was silent.
But emotional.
Then Maya stopped.
Her face changed.
She looked at Cole.
Cole knew.
“What did she say?””
Tasha looked at him.
“She asked why Elena never came back.””
Cole’s anger disappeared.
Replaced by something worse.
Pain.
Tasha looked toward the window.
“She tried.””
A pause.
“She’s been trying for twelve years.””
Cole stepped closer.
“Where is she?””
Tasha hesitated.
That hesitation told him everything.
“She’s alive.””
Cole stopped breathing.
The impossible became possible.
“Elena is alive?””
Tasha nodded.
“But she’s not alone.””
Cole stared.
“Who is with her?””
Tasha looked at the children.
Then at Derek.
Then at Marcus.
Her voice became a whisper.
“The person Raymond has been protecting this whole time.””
A phone vibrated.
Everyone looked down.
Not Cole’s.
Not Maya’s.
Tasha’s.
She checked the screen.
Her face changed instantly.
“What?””
Cole stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Tasha slowly turned the phone around.
One message.
One line.
From Raymond.
*BRING THEM TO THE WAREHOUSE, OR ELENA DIES.*
Cole stared at the screen.
Then at the children.
Then at the people who had lied to him for twelve years.
He finally understood.
The diner wasn’t the end of the mystery.
It was the beginning.
And the truth was waiting where everything started.
The old warehouse.
Where Elena disappeared.
Where Cole lost everything.
And where Raymond was waiting.
But before anyone could move, another message appeared.
This one was shorter.
From an unknown number.
Cole opened it.
His face changed.
Because the message wasn’t from Raymond.
It was from Elena.
May you like
Three words.
*Don’t trust Tasha.*
