Chapter 8: The Voice From the Dead
I couldn’t speak.
The phone pressed against my ear felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.
My mind rejected what my ears had just heard.
It wasn’t possible.
It couldn’t be possible.
Daniel had been gone for thirty years.
I had mourned him.
I had carried his absence like a scar that never healed.
And now…
Now he was breathing on the other end of the line.
“Daniel?””
My voice cracked.
The truck became completely silent.
Nobody moved.
Not Ruth.
Not Victor.
Not Marcus.
The only sound was the faint static coming from the phone.
Then his voice came again.
“Bear.””
A single word.
But it carried decades.
Decades of regret.
Decades of pain.
Decades of things left unsaid.
My eyes closed.
I fought against the emotion rising in my chest.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
A long one.
Then:
“I can’t tell you.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“What do you mean you can’t tell me?””
“Because if you know where I am, they’ll know too.””
My eyes opened.
I looked around the truck.
Everyone was watching me.
Everyone except Ruth.
She was looking down.
Like she already knew.
“Who are they?””
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“You’re with Ruth.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stared at her.
“How do you know that?””
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Because I knew she would find you.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel, I need answers.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice rose.
“I spent thirty years thinking you abandoned me.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
The silence afterward hurt.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I know.””
That broke something inside me.
Because he didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t argue.
He just accepted my pain.
“I called you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Before I disappeared.””
My eyes closed.
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice became softer.
“You don’t know.””
The truck seemed to disappear.
All I could hear was him.
“I called you because I was scared.””
My throat tightened.
“Daniel…”
“I thought I could fix everything. I thought if I found enough evidence, if I showed enough people the truth, they would understand.””
His voice shook.
“I was wrong.””
I looked at the letter in my lap.
My father’s confession.
The warnings.
The secrets.
Everything was finally connecting.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Because someone I loved tried to kill me.””
My breathing stopped.
The words were simple.
But they carried everything.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Who, Daniel?””
“I need you to listen carefully.””
I sat straighter.
“Okay.””
“Do not trust Victor.””
My eyes moved toward him.
Victor looked away.
“Why?””
“Because Victor knows more than he admits.””
I looked at Victor.
That part didn’t surprise me.
But then Daniel continued.
“And don’t trust Marcus.””
My head turned.
Marcus.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel?””
The line crackled.
“Bear, there is only one person in that truck who never wanted you to find the truth.””
My heart raced.
I looked at Ruth.
She was still looking down.
Then Victor.
Then Marcus.
“Who?””
Daniel whispered:
“The person who knew where I hid the evidence.””
The call suddenly cut.
I stared at the screen.
Disconnected.
“Daniel?””
Nothing.
I called back.
The number no longer existed.
My hands lowered.
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus said quietly:
“You shouldn’t have answered.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face was different.
The calm confidence was gone.
“What did you say?””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“You weren’t supposed to hear his voice yet.””
The words sent a chill through me.
Yet.
Not ever.
Yet.
I stood.
“You knew?””
Nobody answered.
I pointed at him.
“You knew Daniel was alive?””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
The silence was enough.
My anger exploded.
“You all knew?””
Ruth looked up.
“Bear—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“All of you.””
Victor stood.
“I didn’t know where he was.””
“But you knew he was alive.””
Victor looked away.
“Yes.””
I laughed.
A painful, empty sound.
“Thirty years.””
I looked at Ruth.
“You watched me grieve him.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that.””
My voice became quieter.
“But nobody ever protected me from the lie.””
Ruth lowered her head.
Marcus finally spoke.
“Daniel made us promise.””
I looked at him.
“Promise what?””
“That we would never bring you into this unless it was necessary.””
I stared.
“And now?””
Marcus looked at the storm outside.
“Now someone found the medallion.””
My hand moved instinctively toward my vest.
The silver piece.
The thing that started everything.
Victor stepped forward.
“Bear, listen.””
“No.””
“You need to understand.””
“I understand enough.””
I pointed at him.
“You all made decisions for me.””
Victor’s expression softened.
“Because you were the only person Daniel wanted to save.””
I looked at him.
“And who saved Daniel?””
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt more than anything.
Then Ruth stood.
Slowly.
She looked older than she had minutes before.
“I need to tell you something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She walked to the back of the truck and pulled out a small bag.
Inside was another box.
Smaller than the first.
She placed it in front of me.
“This belonged to Daniel.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“Something he left for you.””
“Why didn’t you give me this before?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then Victor.
Then me.
“Of what you would do when you learned the truth.””
I opened the box.
Inside was a small recording device.
Old.
Scratched.
But preserved.
My hands shook.
“There’s a message.””
Ruth nodded.
I pressed the button.
Static filled the truck.
Then a voice.
Daniel.
Younger.
The sound of my brother from thirty years ago.
My heart broke.
“Bear.””
I closed my eyes.
“If you’re hearing this, then things went wrong.””
A pause.
“I’m sorry.””
I swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t explain everything.””
The recording continued.
“I need you to know one thing.””
The sound crackled.
“I never left you.””
A tear slipped down my face before I could stop it.
“I was trying to come home.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Daniel said:
“But before you look for me, you need to find the person who betrayed me.””
I opened my eyes.
The recording continued.
“They are closer than you think.””
A pause.
Then his final words:
“Bear… the person who gave them my location wasn’t Ruth.””
My heart stopped.
Everyone looked up.
The recording continued.
“It wasn’t Victor.””
The truck went silent.
“And it wasn’t Marcus.””
My breathing slowed.
Then Daniel said the words nobody expected.
“It was me.””
The recording clicked.
The message ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the device.
“What does that mean?””
No one answered.
Then Victor whispered:
“Because Daniel knew the truth before any of us.””
I looked at him.
“What truth?””
Victor’s face turned pale.
“The person who betrayed him…”
He swallowed.
“Was never trying to kill him.””
I frowned.
“Then what were they trying to do?””
Victor looked at the dead recording device.
May you like
And said:
“They were trying to save him from himself.””
